Towards A New Era Of Journal Publishing: The Coalition Of Diamond, Reiner Kallenborn, Tamara Froehler
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Since the early 1990s, the term Open Access has been synonymous with the principle of publishing the scientific results of taxpayer-funded research at low cost and making them available to the public free of charge. In response to increasing academic demand for at least some degree of unrestricted access to research results, this idea of Open Access has been taken up by commercial publishers and harshly altered to accommodate finance models that allow global access to scien-tific and scholarly articles on payment of a publication fee.
This has exacerbated the financial burden on universities with a strong publishing portfolio while …

Zooming Into Breakout Rooms For Engaging Library Instruction Sessions, Sarah J. Hammill
Zooming Into Breakout Rooms For Engaging Library Instruction Sessions, Sarah J. Hammill
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
i. With Covid-19 came the onset of social distancing, closed campuses, and limited open hours in physical libraries. Instruction librarians shifted to online instruction and had to modify the traditional way of teaching. In face-to-face settings it is easy to read the room. For example, a blank stare usually indicates that the student has “left the room” mentally. This is when an instruction librarian reengages the room by asking a question, changing their intonation, walking around the room, or calling on someone in order to bring back the stargazers. We quickly learned that most of our tried-and-true teaching tips do …

Library Research & Adobe Scholars: Lifelong Learning Through Mentoring, Ava Brillat, Lauren Fralinger, Vanessa Rodriguez
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
i. The Library Research Scholars program pairs librarian faculty mentors with undergraduates on a yearlong journey of engaging with research and creating an intellectual product on a topic of their own devising. Each librarian mentor is paired with a Library Research Scholar whose research area of interest coincides with the librarian’s own area of expertise. As mentors, librarians work actively to guide their mentees through an open-ended, research inquiry process. Librarian faculty members from all departments of the library, including Technical Services, have served as mentors to Library Research Scholars. Librarian faculty mentors guide Research Scholars through a process of …

Zoomed Out? How Burnout Was Associated With Affect, Personality, And Job Satisfaction Among Library Employees During The Pandemic, Barbara M. Sorondo, Christopher M. Jimenez, Sarah J. Hammill
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In March 2020, many libraries transitioned from onsite to remote work in an “abundance of caution” due to the coronavirus pandemic. Almost overnight, the varied interactions previously occurring across classrooms, conference rooms, offices, staff lounges, and cafes transformed into endless Zoom sessions. Many library employees consequently noted feeling greater stress, fatigue, and burnout, the latter of which is characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, alienation from work activities, and reduced job performance. We measured how burnout related to affect, personality, job satisfaction, and various characteristics among library employees during this transition to remote work.
We distributed a survey to all library …

Documenting Doha: Community Archiving And Collective Memory In Qatar, Sumayya Ahmed
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Heritage experts working in Qatar contend that international museum standards do not allow them to engage with local understandings of history and heritage, thereby acknowledging the disconnect between museums and Qatari collective memory. This article posits that due to the relative absence of relatable representations in international-facing museums, Qataris, building upon a local tradition of private folk museums, are collecting and sharing their heritage materials via social media in forms known in the field of archival studies as “community archiving.” In reviewing examples of Qatari online community archives, it notes correspondences to the characteristics of community archives that have been …

User, How Do I Know You? User-Centered Research For Library Websites, Robin Naughton
Publications and Research
Websites are ubiquitous. They are everywhere and everyone seems to be using them. Thus, user experience has become popular, but not everyone uses user-centered research and design principles to design websites. Libraries are beginning to use the tools of user experience, design thinking, and user-centered research to improve library websites. User-centered research places the user at the core of the research and seeks to understand the user so that the resulting solutions can better respond to the needs of users. Who are your users? How do you learn more about your users? What are your users doing? How do you …

Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Library Scholarship
Approximately 15% of Binghamton University Libraries' 28,000 musical scores are collections of scores comprising a composer's complete works. Ideally, these large, multipart, non-circulating collections are cataloged consistently with either comprehensive records for each set, or individual records for each score within the set. Our catalog is inconsistent in this approach and requires remediation. The resulting workflow maximizes flexibility in who participates, where, and when, by siloing the portion of the work requiring data processing and advanced music cataloging skills. This poster will show both the workflow for standardizing composers' collected works sets, and how the project is designed for remote …

Exploring Wikipedia As A Tool For Community Building And Teaching And Learning, Timothy R. Dewysockie, Andrea Baer
Libraries Scholarship
Wikipedia has become a widely accepted information source. Wikipedia is also by its very nature centered on community and on building and growing knowledge collectively. However, many are still understandably skeptical of how credible Wikipedia content is, and a gap remains between how frequently we use Wikipedia and how well we understand it. Wikipedia creates an opening for exploring how information is created and circulated, how the information creation process is often negotiated collectively, and how to critically evaluate online information. This session will explore how Wikipedia can be a rich tool for both teaching information literacy and building community …

Using “Live” Assignments For Formative Assessment, Olivia Smith Schlinck
Library Staff Online Writings
At the Teaching the Teachers Conference a few weeks ago, I gave a demonstration of a formative assessment style we’ve been using at my institution for the past year and a half: a live assignment, AKA the Research Practicum. The presentation was virtual; COVID struck, of course, and I couldn’t get on a plane and fly to Portland. Fortunately, the nature of this assessment lends itself beautifully to a pivot to virtual because it is already entirely virtual. The Research Practicum uses Zoom or some other video conferencing platform and asks students to research while sharing their screen as their …
