In March 2018, the Board of Directors of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) approved a new mission statement that includes a call to “promote equity and diversity” and lists “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) as one of its four priorities. ARL encourages but does not mandate similar visible commitments from its member institutions. This is evident by the resource webpage that ARL maintains entitled, “ARL Library Statements and Signs Affirming Our Core Beliefs.” The listed members represent approximately 19% of ARL’s membership. The Library and Information Science (LIS) literature has made clear that academic libraries in the U.S. have experienced decades of hiring freezes and budget cuts that reduced staffing overall and eliminated many middle management positions. Consequently, now that baby boomer library managers and administrators are beginning to retire, there are few qualified applicants to replace them. Thus, many in the LIS field have called for better succession planning by top-level library administrators (e.g., Deans, Directors, University Librarians). Soaring Into The Future Of Chat Reference: Assessing For Quality In Cooperative Chat Reference, Elise Ferer

Online reference allows for libraries to join cooperatives to provide chat reference when local librarians are not available, far extending the hours assistance is available to patrons. As the future brings more cross institutional collaboration, how do we know that cooperative chat is effective for our patrons? Librarians at one institution worked to develop a rubric to assess chat transcripts for the quality of services provided. Over one academic term, these librarians assessed chat transcripts answered by academic librarians from other libraries. This poster will share the rubric used to assess transcripts, research methods, and initial findings from collected data.

The web began with a vision of, as stated by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991, “that much academic information should be freely available to anyone”. For many years, the development of the web and the development of digital libraries and other scholarly communications infrastructure proceeded in tandem. A milestone occurred in July, 1995, when the first issue of D-Lib Magazine was published as an online, HTML-only, open access magazine, serving as the focal point for the then emerging digital library research community. Theories and models, which are common in scientific papers in almost all domains, usually provide the foundations of theoretical analysis and experiments. Understanding the use of theories and models can shed light on the credibility and reproducibility of research works. Compared with metadata, such as title, author, keywords, etc., theory extraction in scientific literature is rarely explored, especially for social and behavioral science (SBS) domains. One challenge of applying supervised learning methods is the lack of a large number of labeled samples for training.
