The use of social networks among students at higher institutions has become popular and is widely celebrated amid criticism. This is because these social networks are changing the way people communicate, interact, and socialize. The purpose of this paper is to explore students' awareness and use of social media: a study of ICT students at Kwara State University, Nigeria. This study used a survey research method. This study was on the security of information resources in academic libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. Academic libraries in Kwara State include both private and public institutions. The libraries were predominantly selected for academic purposes, such as Kwara State University, University of Ilorin, Al-Hikmah University, and Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin. Four research questions and four corresponding objectives of the study were framed. The case study design was approved for research. As part of a class on Europe after WWI, the library helped create an interactive assignment in which students looked at geographic and political changes in European countries as a key to understanding the effects of WWI. Based on government publications, students created and annotated digital maps to show how the Treaty of Versailles redrew country boundaries and changed governmental alliances. The library’s government documents collection made the assignment possible.

We describe the project, the outcomes it produced, and most importantly, what it suggests about a burgeoning role for govdocs that could cast the collection in a new light. The …

Institutional Surveys Redux: Student And Faculty Responses On Course Materials During Covid-19, Jennifer Mayer

The presenter developed and distributed two campus survey questionnaires in fall 2018, and redistributed them in fall 2021, to see what, if anything, had changed in responses. One survey focused on textbook and course materials costs and impacts on students. The other survey focused on perceptions and awareness of open educational resources (OER) by faculty members. The survey instruments were deployed both years via the Provost's Office to students and faculty. Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. However, even the University of Rochester's collections are sadly lacking in works by and about scientists of color. Our poster describes our work to rectify this situation in order to inspire current and future BIPOC students to go into STEM fields. One scientist who we feature is Joy Buolamwini, who recently earned her PhD from MIT’s Media Lab. Dr. Bertner, one of founders of the Texas Medical Center in Houston Texas, was its first President from 1945 to 1950. He was also the acting director for the first four years of the existence of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Bertner was active in leading many medical organizations and institutions in the first half of the 20th century in Texas and in the nation. GLSEN Kansas, as a part of a national network works to ensure that LGBTQ students are able to learn and grow in a school environment free from bullying and harassment. GLSEN believes that every student has the right to a safe, supportive, and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 education. Our research and experience has shown that there are four major ways that schools can cultivate a safe and supportive environment for all of their students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression: developing supportive educators, advocating for comprehensive inclusive policies, providing inclusive curriculum and supporting student led GSAs.

In 2019-2020 the Andover Public Library received book challenges on three books in the children’s collection featuring transgender main characters, George by Alex Gino, Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart and I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings. The Library Board rejected the challenges and the books remain in the children’s collections. This presentation will share the story of the challenges and all that transpired, including media attention and a protest. The last several years have seen community backlash against LGBTQ+-centered events, displays, and literature in libraries. This precedent can make it intimidating to introduce LGBTQ+ programming, especially in towns with conservative populations. However, there are methods that can help organizations find support and get residents comfortable with LGBTQ+ programming. The Brookings Public Library in Brookings, SD began the process of integrating LGBTQ+-centered events into their programming by bringing their community to the forefront.

The UMKC University Libraries held the second Rainbow Read-In (RRI) virtually in June 2022. Readers presented either their own works if they identify as LGBTQIA+ or works written by LGBTQIA+ authors. Nine participants presented and sixty people attended. Our first Rainbow Read-In included ten presenters and forty attendees in 2021.
