Experiential learning programs are an effective method to teach data-focused research skills and statistical analysis. We examine the effects of a participatory research training program developed and executed by a data librarian and administered to library employees at a large academic library. The program aimed to improve research skills and increase research productivity. This study employs a survey within a concurrent mixed methods methodological framework to examine the outcomes of the training program. Our findings show that the program served as a low-cost, short-term, effective method of teaching data collection and quantitative analysis that increased participants’ knowledge of the research …

This article describes PracticeCon, a mini conference put on by the Middle Georgia Emerging Librarians, the Georgia Library Association's New Members Round Table and Special Libraries and Information Services Division. The aim of the event was to offer presentation tips and tricks to library workers and give them the opportunity to practice presenting. The article reflects on the presentations that were done and what was learned during the event.

This survey-based study explores the ways Covid19 has added to the existing challenges faced by novice teachers by introducing brand new stressors and exacerbating previously identified challenges during the 2020-2021 school year. We have sought to identify what kinds of support were in place for new teachers during Covid-19 and how these were received by beginning educators. What did they find comforting and useful? In what work contexts did teachers feel supported? By whom? What were teachers’ preferences for intervention and support?

While many digital scholarship tools and computational methods can play an important role in digital humanities research at all stages, it’s usually the final output that is the most visible element of these projects. This talk will explore exhibits built using the Omeka platform with a particular focus on incorporating the Neatline plugin to create interactive maps. Continuing with maps, we will look at some possibilities for including these in projects built using the Scalar platform. We will also talk more generally about getting started with digital humanities projects and planning for sustainability.

February 8 is National Black Women Physicians Day! The McGovern Historical Center highlights one of many amazing Black women physicians in early Texas. In 1950, less than 6% of doctors nationwide were women. Of that number, less than 2% of women physicians in the United States were Black. To practice medicine as a Black woman in the south prior to the start of the Civil Rights Movement that is why celebrating these women’s accomplishments is so important.

What do students retain from first-year workshops? In fall 2019, Utah State University Libraries assessed our interactive orientation when it became optional rather than required for USU’s first-year seminar, creating two populations to study, participants and nonparticipants. By convening focus groups and analyzing campus data, we investigated if the orientation helped freshmen engage with library spaces, services, and materials. Findings revealed workshop strengths and weaknesses, as well as broader student preferences, behaviors, and expectations. Join librarians and students to discuss first-year students’ anxieties and needs concerning not only the library, but also campus belonging and student independence.

This presentation will explore perspectives on inclusive hiring practices from both sides of the table. Grand Valley State University Libraries developed inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices, which they implemented in 2018. The Dean and a past diversity resident team up to dissect the hiring process from both of their perspectives. Annie Bélanger discusses the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing an inclusive recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process. An ISSN is a number that functions as the identity of a periodical. ISSN registration services in Indonesia are provided through the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. This study aims to determine the inhibiting factors during the ISSN application process in Indonesia. The method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection through in-depth interviews with ISSN service officers and journal managers was conducted at the end of 2019 and early 2020 to obtain information about ISSN registration in previous years. There are more than 12 library schools in Pakistan producing around 1,000 graduates every year. These graduates hold 16-year BS or MLIS professional qualifications. There is no calculated estimate available concerning the number of related jobs and the vacant ones in the country. Therefore, it is not possible to determine the number of LIS graduates required in the country within a particular span. The academic libraries especially in the public sector accommodate most of such graduates.
