A Citation Analysis Of The E-Journal, Library Philosophy And Practice (2005-2014), Anjali Verma, Sharad Kumar Sonker, Vibha Gupta

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The present study is based on the citation pattern of the articles published for the period 2005–2014 of the Library Philosophy and Practice, E-Journal. 1180 articles are published in the journal during 2005-2014. Highest numbers (198) of articles were published in 2011. The E-Journal contained 20978 references for the study period of which 15518 are documentary sources citations and 5460 are non-documentary source citations. Every year almost 118 articles are published and each article has an average of 13.15 documentary sources and 4.618 non-documentary citations.

This paper examines the tumblarians as an information community and discusses community membership, information behaviours, and complementary models for a situated understanding of this unique personal-professional community. A review of the literature concerning LIS bloggers is presented as a complement to the tumblarians, who have no in depth treatment in the research as yet. Characteristics particular to the tumblarians are explored through informal conversation with a community member, and Fisher, Unruh, and Durrance's (2003) information communities model is employed to provide a deeper understanding of the information behaviour of the tumblarians. This analysis evaluates how PhillyHistory.org merged their unique special collection materials with geospatial-based progressive technology to challenge and educate the global community. A new generation of technologically savvy researchers has emerged that expect a more enhanced user experience than earlier generations. To meet these needs, collection managers are collaborating with community and local institutions to increase online access to materials; mixing best metadata practices with custom elements to create map mashups; and merging progressive GIS technology and geospatial based applications with their collections to enhance the user experience. This study examines current research methods utilized by genealogists, and seeks to discover the impact of emerging tools and technologies on their information seeking needs and behaviors. When it became clear that there is a shortage of scholarly studies identifying the use of newer technologies (i.e. blogs, social media, and apps), an original survey for genealogists was created. Over four hundred genealogists were surveyed regarding their use of both traditional research methods (methods that have existed for many decades) and Internet/electronic resources, in order to demonstrate which new trends are emerging. Most information literacy instruction (ILI) done in academic libraries today is based on the ACRL’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, but with the replacement of these standards by the new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, there is a need to re-evaluate current teaching strategies and instructional techniques so that they can better serve the Framework’s goals. As smartphones become ubiquitous, they increasingly influence the way in which students seek and use information. It is important to understand emerging information behavior as a result of wide spread use of smartphones. This paper provides an overview of information behavior in the mobile environment. Gender differences in mobile information seeking are discussed. People interact with mobile information in varied and unpredictable locations or while in transit. The mobility of information engagement is an important issue that human information theory should embrace.

At Utah State University, a pilot project is under development to evaluate the benefits of tracking data sets and faculty publications using the online catalog and the Library’s institutional repository.

With federal mandates to make publications and data open, universities look for solutions to track compliance. At Utah State University, the Sponsored Programs Office follows up with researchers to determine where data has been or will be deposited, per the terms of their grant.

A Study Of Nigerian Librarians' Attitude To Open Source Software, Olatunji Adimabua Akintomide Mr

This paper discussed librarians’ attitudes towards open source software. Questionnaires were the research instrument used. One thousand (1000) questionnaires were administered out of which nine hundred and twenty (920) were returned and used for the study which represents a return rate of ninety-two percent (92%). Responses were analysed using simple percentages and results were presented in tables and charts.

The study revealed that Nigerian Librarians are familiar with open source, proprietary software and are strongly in favour of open source software. The study also revealed that the Android Operating System and Windows Operating System are the most popular operating system …

The study aims to investigate the level of awareness and use of Web 2.0 tools by Library and Information Science (LIS) students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The study adopted a descriptive survey method and questionnaire was used to collect data from 220 respondents. The results show that the LIS students of UNN are quite familiar with some Web 2.0 tools such as Social networking sites, Instant Messaging, blogs and Wikis, while, they are not familiar with tools such as RSS feeds, Podcasts, and social bookmarks. The study aims to bring to light the various channels students prefer to submit reference inquiries to librarians in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the various channels students prefer when making reference inquiries in Nigerian university libraries. The questionnaire was administered to the students in the university library. It was found that the students use the person-to-person/traditional reference desk, the phone/SMS, the library Facebook page most when seeking for reference help.
