Each of us has a personal narrative: a story that defines us, and one that we tell about ourselves to our inner and outer worlds. A strong sense of identity is rooted in a personal narrative that has coherence and correspondence (Conway, 2005): coherence in the sense that the story we tell is consistent with and supportive of our current version of ‘self’; and correspondence in the sense that the story reflects the contents of autobiographical memory and the meaning of our experiences. These goals are achieved by a reciprocal interaction of autobiographical memory and the self, in which memories …

The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library serves the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Milken Institute School of Public Health, and the School of Nursing. Over the last half century, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the more recently incorporated Schools of Public Health and Nursing, have experienced substantial growth in their research enterprise and a corresponding increase in scholarly communications. Using statistics and metrics derived from bibliographic databases, this poster will track the growth in scholarly output from 1960 to the present. Number of publications will be tracked and additional metrics will be explored. These metrics include …

Who’S To Judge? The Conundrum Of Evaluative Criteria For Autoethnographic Research, Robert Schroeder
Who’S To Judge? The Conundrum Of Evaluative Criteria For Autoethnographic Research, Robert Schroeder
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Writing autoethnographic research is inherently subjective, messy, idiosyncratic, political, and transformative (of both the author and the reader) and is therefore the antithesis of quantitative empirical (positivist) research; research which wraps itself in the objective (the non-I) and makes claims of universality and generalizability. Obviously the criteria that journal editors, reviewers, and readers will use to evaluate autoethnographic writing must be radically new and different. What makes this new research valid or rigorous — what makes it research? Begin to explore how we might create and use evaluative criteria for autoethnographic research, or if we should even attempt to create …

“They Kind Of Rely On The Library”: School Librarians Serving Lgbt Students, Shannon M. Oltmann
Information Science Faculty Publications
This research examines school librarians’ perspectives on collecting LGBT materials. Based on qualitative interviews with thirty-one school librarians, this project found generally strong support for collecting LGBT materials. School librarians discussed serving their communities, having resources for all students, and meeting the needs of diverse students. In addition, they shared several ways that school libraries can counter bullying: creating a bully-free zone in the library, collecting LGBT and anti-bullying materials, collaborating with guidance counselors and teachers, suggesting particular books for certain students, being a supporter of students, and positioning the school library as a safe space.

Libraries have shifted from repositories of materials to centers of innovation and community-based learning. Many library services changed to accommodate the shift; some staff find this difficult and perplexing and it has led to technological wariness and resistance to change. To address this we developed a continuous in-house professional development program. We will discuss barriers and enablers to establishing a program and unintended benefits, such as reducing perceived inequalities among staff, increasing trust, and empowering staff.

In Spring 2015, a group of librarians at the LMU Library, as part of their service on the library’s EBSCO Discovery Service Evaluation Task Force surveyed all librarians at LMU to understand their perceptions of OneSearch+ (EBSCO Discovery Tool) and its usefulness in their liaison areas. The goal of the survey was to understand whether they found relevant sources that they were looking for, any challenges they encountered while conducting their searches, to improve our instance of OneSearch+ based on the survey feedback and to identify next steps. This presentation will highlight some of the feedback ranging from librarians being …

How Readers Discover Content In Scholarly Publications, Tracy Gardner, Simon Inger
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This report is the output of a large-scale survey of readers of scholarly publications (n=40439) and their behaviour in the discovery of journal articles and online books. The survey was conducted during October, November, and December of 2015. While usage statistics and analytics gathered by publishers, libraries and intermediaries can give us a partial view of discovery behaviour, there are many gaps in the knowledge that these can provide which we have endeavoured to fill by asking readers what tools they use in discovery.6
This survey builds upon previous surveys conducted by the authors in 2005, 2008 and 2012. For …

The Distractions Of Technology, Kimberly Mattioli
The Distractions Of Technology, Kimberly Mattioli
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Since the moment I became a librarian, I have had a problem with technology. It’s not that I can’t keep up with the developments or that I can’t figure out ways to incorporate technology into my work. My problem is much simpler in a way—I find technology too distracting. With my desktop, my phone, and my iPad sitting in my office, how could I not be drawn to the glowing screens and the limitless websites before me? The Internet is never-ending, and so too, it seems, is my ability to be distracted by it. With a little dedication, however, I …
