Juggling Collections And Connections To Community: Changing Role Of Libraries, Jorge A. Leon Jr., Barbara M. Pope
Juggling Collections And Connections To Community: Changing Role Of Libraries, Jorge A. Leon Jr., Barbara M. Pope
Nebraska Library Association: Conferences
The traditional role of the academic librarian has long been the support of the university’s needs through instruction, collection development, and research assistance. Over the decades, this role has evolved to match the needs of the 21st century university. At Leonard H. Axe Library, the challenge has been to balance the print and electronic collections at a university whose programs do not draw enough on library resources while also creating meaningful connections with students and faculty. To increase collection relevancy and make meaningful connections, the library has been creating opportunities for patrons to be content-creators and to engage with library …
Creating Green Open Access To Institutional Scholarship Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira
Creating Green Open Access To Institutional Scholarship Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira
Nebraska Library Association: Conferences
The digital repository serves as a Green Open Access solution to globally share scholarship produced by the university community. Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) previously used CONTENTdm (CDM) as their primary digital repository. In 2015, both PSU and FHSU purchased and launched Bepress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. Considering global discoverability, unlimited storage, efficient technical support, and the ability to share a wide range of file formats in one interface, Digital Commons by Bepress is the most reliable for small institutions.
This paper is based on the presentation delivered by PSU and …

Color Me Calm: Adult Coloring In The University Library, Heidi Blackburn, Claire E. Chamley
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In early summer 2015, a local newspaper reported on adults in the Omaha-metro area joining in on adult coloring. While a student coloring club formed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall, no such organization existed at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Capitalizing on the growing adult coloring trend and local interest, Criss Library held several events entitled “Color Me Calm” during the 2015-2016 academic year, both independently and during a campus-wide event known as “De-Stress Fest.” This event is held in partnership multiple departments and groups across the UNO campus, including the Academic and Career Development …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
As the use of green open access policies looks increasingly like a failed strategy, and as universities, research funders, and governments in Europe seek to engineer a mass “flipping” of subscription journals to gold OA, has the open access movement reached a watershed moment? If so, how will it develop from here, is it headed in the right direction, and who should be leading the way? One remarkable thing about the OA movement is that it has primarily been driven by people other than researchers. The President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, José van Dijck drew …

The Anchor, Volume 129.23: April 20, 2016, Hope College
The Anchor: 2016
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Autoethnography: Our Stories, Our Research, Anne-Marie Deitering, Robert Schroeder, Rick Stoddart
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Autoethnography is a research method, whereby researchers investigate aspects of what it means to be a librarian. Starting with a reflective examination of themselves they investigate questions of library culture, values and identity. Autoethnography has potential to help librarians answer questions that cannot be answered by traditional, empirical research methods and to reveal voices that are obscured by aggregations of data. Autoethnography blends art and science and is at turns evocative, analytical, and creative. It can help us look deeply into our library culture, critique it where need be, transform ourselves, and ultimately inspire us to change librarianship for the …

Don't Get Left Behind: Moving Library Instruction Online, Christina Hillman, Katie Sabourin
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
With the growing number of online courses and programs across the higher education spectrum, the need to train faculty to effectively design and deliver online courses has become essential to many institutions. However, many professional development options do not include information or support in order to transition the same library services and resources faculty might use in their face-to-face classes to this new environment. The following case study describes professional development for faculty preparing to teach online at one small, private, doctoral-granting institution; how library resources and services were incorporated into the professional development experience; and the overall impressions from …

“Exploring Digital Badging: The What, Why And Some Of The How”, Kelsey O'Brien, Trudi Jacobson
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
In a hands-on workshop presented for members of the Central New York Library Resources Council (CLRLC) participants learned about digital badging and its applications in higher education and libraries. The presentation provides an overview of micro-credentialing as a growing trend in education, and provides a behind-the-scenes look at the development and implementation of the Metaliteracy Badging System (metaliteracybadges.org), a collaborative project led by librarians, instructional designers and disciplinary faculty across State University of New York (SUNY) institutions. Participants had the opportunity to engage with each other about badging examples and brainstormed ideas for creating a badging program.

Closing The Loop With Heds: Information Literacy Program Assessment, Melissa Jadlos
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
The presentation discusses the Research Practices Survey tool from the Higher Education Data Sharing consortium (HEDS). St. John Fisher College, Lavery Library has worked with the survey on and off since 2008. Librarians using HEDS data to close the loop and modify teaching practices have increased scores by up to 60%. Currently, Lavery Library is using the Research Practices Survey in a longitudinal administration to determine persistence of information literacy skills and pinpoint areas of further instruction and/or assessment.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
The study investigated if homophily-heterophily consciousness and staff quality, could correlate with effective reference services. The study made use of three objectives, three research questions and four hypotheses. It adopted the descriptive design of the correlation type which seeks to establish the relationship that exists between two or more variables. A total of 1,500 undergraduate students were selected from nine universities in North Central Nigeria using proportionate sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire with three subscales which were used for data collection. They were Effective Reference Services Questionnaire (ERSQ), Homophily-Heterophily Questionnaire (HM-HTQ), Staff Quality Questionnaire (SQQ). A …

Getting Involved With The Digital Humanities In Theology, Biblical Studies, And Religious Studies, Kent Gerber
Librarian Publications and Presentations
Digital humanities are growing and thriving in higher education, and, in the spirit of the pioneering work of Father Busa, it is important for theological and religious studies libraries and librarians to consider our roles and involvement in the current milieu of challenge and opportunity. The library and digital humanities communities possess many shared values and goals, including providing wide access to cultural information, enhancing teaching and learning, making a public impact, and benefiting from the invigorating, though not salvific, effect of technology to their efforts.
