Collaborative Growth Toward Discovery: Becoming Stronger Through Change, Margaret Heller, Hong Ma Apr 2016

Collaborative Growth Toward Discovery: Becoming Stronger Through Change, Margaret Heller, Hong Ma

University Libraries: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The radical act of replacing a traditional OPAC and ILS with a hosted library services platform (LSP) and web-scale discovery (WSD) system creates the impetus for libraries to rethink core workflows and practices. Both of these tools have the potential to greatly improve access to library collections and enhance user experience, but only if the implementation is a collaborative effort between different stakeholders, technical experts and subject librarians, grounded in a thoughtful selection process that emphasizes user needs. Furthermore, because this model removes the traditional OPAC, subject librarians must take on the challenge of understanding the tool and work as …

How To Create An Oral History Program, Devin Mckinney

All Musselman Library Staff Works

The archival literature is full of calls to document under-represented voices, to create participatory archives, and to be an activist archivist. However, when funds and time are limited, these ideals can seem impossible to implement. What's an archivist to do? One easy and affordable option is to create an oral history program. This workshop will give you the skills and the confidence to start an oral history program at your own institution. It will cover the main steps from performing preliminary research and developing questions all the way through thinking about how to promote and use your oral histories once …

Shall We Dance? The Re-Housing And Digitization Of Gettysburg College Dance Cards, Avery N. Fox, Alexa R. Schreier

All Musselman Library Staff Works

The Gettysburg College Dance Card Collection contains over 100 dance cards from multiple accessions and of differing sizes and materials. The collection was previously kept in small, crammed boxes; its re-housing and digitization were an evident necessity. The needs and goals of this project were two-pronged: first, establishing physical and intellectual control over the items by building custom housing and enhancing item descriptions; and second, creating a digital collection featuring samples and highlights of the dance cards.

Crossroads For Success: University Mission, Community Partnerships And Information Literacy, Judith Arnold, Veronica Bielat, Katrina B. Rouan

Library Scholarly Publications

Urban-based higher educational institutions often embrace an outreach mission that not only “gives back” to the community supporting the university but also fosters a relationship that may lead to recruiting local talent. This presentation examines what happens when that community engagement mission intersects with the library, and traditional and non-traditional partnerships are formed, offering information literacy a role in the goal of helping high school and middle school students prepare to succeed in college.

For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Recipe For A Healthy Collection Assessment, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Collection assessments are conducted at the Houston Cole Library to ensure that current programs are supported adequately and to find out if materials are needed for newly added programs. They are conducted approximately every 5 years or sooner if needed for program reaccreditations.

Subject librarians prepare collection assessment reports using either a detailed long method with conspectus worksheets, or a short method with more numbers and less narrative. Ingredients are mixed together with the help of the technical services and acquisition departments to prepare needed data.

Assessment reports on various Library of Congress subjects have the same basic recipe. Some …

Success of students in Doctor of Audiology programs largely depends on the ability of the learner to find and evaluate scholarly evidence. The purpose of this study is to measure changes in student information gathering confidence and behavior following training in evidence-based information gathering strategies. Results support the hypothesis that understanding foundational concepts in evidence-based practice (EBP) early in the first year of doctoral education allows the learner to gain confidence in information gathering and produce higher quality scholarly output.

Articulating A Clear Vision For Archives & Special Collections, Nadia Nasr

Staff publications, research, and presentations

It has been five years since OCLC published its report, “Taking Our Pulse: The OCLC Research Survey of Special Collections and Archives,” a report that prompted many institutions to transform their special collections through a series of recommended shared actions. Using this report as a frame, department heads from different institutions will discuss their experiences and perspectives on the changing environments in their respective Archives and Special Collections departments. The Corpus Juris Civilis, Frederick W. Dingledy Apr 2016

The Corpus Juris Civilis, Frederick W. Dingledy

Library Staff Publications

Byzantine Emperor Justinian I ordered the creation of the Corpus Juris Civilis, a compilation of the laws in force at the time, which would become a vital foundation for both the civil law and common law traditions. Important figures in the development of the United States' law used principles listed the Corpus as a guide, and to this day legal scholars and historians still refer to it. Despite its importance, the Corpus can seem impenetrable to researchers, citations to the Corpus enigmatic. This program will give a history of the Corpus, describe its components, and give participants tools for researching …
