Archival Processing Science, Stefanie A. Caloia

Reuther Library Scholarly Publications

Archival collections come in all sizes, formats, and subjects, and it is impossible for any archival education program to cover all situations that professional archivists encounter. Proper planning is essential to processing and paramount when a collection comprises hundreds of linear feet, yet it is often difficult to develop and implement processing plans when drawing on your experience alone. This presentation details a method of conducting a pre-archival processing survey that can be useful through all processing stages, as well as some additional tips on handling archival materials.

Special Collections staff has taken a four-pronged approach to assessing these sessions: a special test-based assessment project targeting first year students in introductory rhetoric classes (LSFY101), one-minute surveys asking participating students about their experience, comprehensive surveys targeting students and faculty, and in-class worksheets graded against a rubric to determine students’ ability to apply skills learned during the sessions. All data has been quantified and will be used to improve future class sessions.

The Cycle Of User-Responsive Collection Development In Digital Libraries, Genevieve Podleski, Jane Davis

Traditional collection development strategies may not be sufficient to effectively expand the use of a digital library or repository. Librarians working on FRASER, a digital library of economic history that is both a subject and institutional repository, have developed a cyclical strategy of user-responsive collection development. Collections developed in response to stakeholder needs include materials on historic responses to mortgage defaults during the Great Depression, and on the causes of historic panics and depressions, which grew out of the research priorities of policymakers and economists during the financial crisis of 2007. Are Scientific Data Repositories Coping With Research Data Publishing?, Massimiliano Assante, Leonardo Candela, Donatella Castelli, Alice Tani

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Research data publishing is intended as the release of research data to make it possible for practitioners to (re)use them according to “open science” dynamics. There are three main actors called to deal with research data publishing practices: researchers, publishers, and data repositories. This study analyses the solutions offered by generalist scientific data repositories, i.e., repositories supporting the deposition of any type of research data. These repositories cannot make any assumption on the application domain. They are actually called to face with the almost open ended typologies of data used in science. The current practices promoted by such repositories are …
