An Old Horse Revived? In-House Use Of Print Books At Seton Hall University, Lisa Rose-Wiles, John P. Irwin
An Old Horse Revived? In-House Use Of Print Books At Seton Hall University, Lisa Rose-Wiles, John P. Irwin
Library Publications
With limited library budgets and declining circulation of print books, it is important to demonstrate library value to multiple stakeholders and to make informed collection development choices. The aim of this one-year study was to gain a complete picture of print book circulation by identifying titles that were used in the library (‘in-house’) but not checked out. We found that almost 30% of circulation transactions were books that were used in-house. Medical and nursing books showed the highest rate of in-house use in both the reference and main (circulating) collection. A close examination of these subject areas indicated that 46% …

Library Scholarship
Based on the theories and practices of institutional repositories (IRs),this paper reviews and summarizes definitions, features, development, benefits and software systems selection process. Hopefully it will provide insight and bring inspiration to those domestic libraries and interested parties planning to work in this area. The authors take Central Washington University Library as a case study to illustrate an approach to implement an IR within a short time frame. IRs have many merits, including collecting and showing an institution's scholarly output. There are four or five main software platforms for institutions to choose from. An institution can decide to adopt one depending on its …

Qualitative Interviews: A Methodological Discussion Of The Interviewer And Respondent Contexts, Shannon M. Oltmann
Qualitative Interviews: A Methodological Discussion Of The Interviewer And Respondent Contexts, Shannon M. Oltmann
Information Science Faculty Publications
Interviews are a staple method used in qualitative research. Many authors hold face-to-face interviews to be the gold standard, or the assumed best mode in which to conduct interviews. However, a large number of research projects are based on conducting interviews via telephone. While some scholars have addressed the advantages and disadvantages of using telephones to conduct interviews, this work is scattered across multiple disciplines and lacks a cohesive, comprehensive framework. The current article seeks to rectify this gap in the literature, by explicitly developing the constructs of the interviewer context and the respondent context. By examining key components in …
Bryn Mawr Digital Competencies Framework, Bryn Mawr College
Bryn Mawr Digital Competencies Framework, Bryn Mawr College
Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources
The digital competencies outlined here are the fruits of both top-down and bottom-up initiatives at Bryn Mawr College. The Board of Trustees' Digital Bryn Mawr Task Force Report has charged Library and Information Technology Services and the College generally with ensuring that students develop the digital competencies needed to succeed in and beyond college. In 2014, Bryn Mawr College received a three-year, $800,000 grant from the Mellon foundation to create curricular and co-curricular opportunities for students to develop these competencies. In working with faculty and students on projects supported by that grant, members of the Educational Technology Services team began …

Fosces: Adding Another Library Tile To The Medical School Mosaic, Alexandra Gomes, Thomas Harrod
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
The 2014 launch of the revised medical school curriculum provided new opportunities for librarians to collaborate with faculty. Due to past informatics instruction in the first year curriculum, we were invited to expand this content as part of a new formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (FOSCE) initiative. This poster will describe the development and implementation of the FOSCE informatics curriculum.
In FOSCEs, small groups of students rotated through simulated patient encounters in order to demonstrate their clinical knowledge and skills. Due to simulation center logistics, students alternated between skills demonstration and informatics activities. The informatics component consisted of fifty minute …

Biblioworks: Advocating For The Creation Of Libraries For Children In Chuquisaca, Bolivia, Jhasmany Saavedra

During 2015-16, I completed my SIT professional practicum as an intern with BiblioWorks based in the Asheville, North Carolina office. Founded in 2005, the focus of this very small organization has been to provide funding and support for libraries and other educational programs in one part of Bolivia. I am from Bolivia and, prior to my scholarship to study at SIT, had worked with local NGOs. During my on-campus phase, I took a sequence of courses in policy advocacy and thus, along with other assignments, I became BiblioWorks’ US-based resource person working with the Bolivia-based director as the organization began …

Teachers + School Librarians = Student Achievement: When Will We Believe It?, Gaetana D'Agata
Teachers + School Librarians = Student Achievement: When Will We Believe It?, Gaetana D'Agata
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
School librarians, teachers, and administrators have understood that student achievement can be enhanced when teachers and librarians collaborate. Most of the scholarly literature concerning teacher-school librarian collaboration has been written by school librarians rather than teachers and administrators. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to describe the concept of teacher-librarian collaboration from the perspectives of school librarians. Content analysis of 37 responses to a school librarians’ online discussion board revealed the barriers to and some of the supports for collaboration.
Persuasion Of Online Crowdfunding Videos, Matthew Roe
Persuasion Of Online Crowdfunding Videos, Matthew Roe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Crowdfunding is a relatively new and exciting way to get investments for a business startup or other project. We use the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) to explore how individuals are persuaded by the project videos on a crowdfunding platform called Kickstarter. ELM is a psychological model used to understand how people are persuaded. Our results support most of our hypotheses and showed that the need for cognition, which reflects the personal tendency towards the central route of ELM, does increase an individual’s intent to back a project. We also discovered that intrinsic motivations and product quality have a stronger effect …

Business Librarians And New Academic Program Review, Kerry Wu, Heidi Senior
Business Librarians And New Academic Program Review, Kerry Wu, Heidi Senior
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
The article aims to examine the role business librarians play in the new academic program proposal process on university and college campuses. Results of a nationwide online survey showed that current practices in this critical area varied. While over 60% of the respondents thought that librarians should play a part in the proposal process, over 65% of them indicated that they were never involved. Amongst those that participated, the levels and outcomes also differed greatly. The authors held in-depth interviews with survey participants reporting higher-than-average involvement to find out about their strategies for success.
Gender And Scholarly Publishing: What Students Need To Know, Lucretia Mcculley
Gender And Scholarly Publishing: What Students Need To Know, Lucretia Mcculley
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
As women and gender studies students emerge as citizens of the world, how can we educate them on scholarly communication issues? What role, if any, does gender play in successful scholarly publishing? How is open access publishing affecting global access to scholarship on gender? How do students’ lives on the Web influence their understanding of copyright?
Women and gender studies students need to understand the economics and legal aspects of scholarship, both as consumers and content creators. They need to be able to thoughtfully discuss who owns information, who controls it and who has access to it. Students also need …

Die Hard: The Impossible, Absolutely Essential Task Of Saving The Web For Scholars, Robin Camille Davis
Publications and Research
The web is fragile and littered with broken links. This poses a problem for the scholarly record and one’s own academic history. In this presentation given at the Association of College & Research Libraries – Eastern New York chapter conference, I review the stats on link rot and reference rot, and I give a brief overview of web archiving and its challenges. I review some web archiving tools: the Internet Archive, Perma.cc, WebRecorder, and GitHub. I advise creators of web projects to design their websites to be accessible and archivable, and to think about preservation (afterlife) of their projects from …

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) is a free trade agreement between 12 countries in the Asia Pacific region: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam. The agreement, signed by the U.S. and other participating countries in Auckland, New Zealand on February 4, 2016, “promotes economic integration to liberalise trade and investment” and “bring economic growth” to the region and participating countries. One reason for the sense of uncertainty, unease, and concern surrounding free trade agreements in general and the TPP in particular is that the negotiations are not public and …
