Guide To The Kenneth A. Bernard Papers, 1945-1994, Orson Kingsley, Jacqueline Solis

Archives & Special Collections Finding Aids

Kenneth Bernard taught history at Boston University for thirty-five years, with a focus on Abraham Lincoln. Over twenty of his students would go on to become members of the Lincoln Group of Boston, and four would serve as president of the group. Bernard joined the Lincoln Group in 1949. He served as secretary, 1954-1960, and as president, 1960-1969, and was an active member until his death in 1994.

Bernard presented many papers to the Lincoln Group. “Campaign Issues in 1860,” at the November 1949 meeting, was the first of many presentations on topics ranging from slavery and emancipation, to Lincoln …

Challenging Classification Bias With Linked Data, Juliya Borie, F. Tim Knight, Jordan Hale

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Can library classification systems find new ways to deal with charges of bias? Can linked data contribute a more inclusive representation of diverse voices and communities? This panel will discuss the inherent biases present in cataloguing and classification, and consider the potential for linked data to provide a space to highlight and explore the challenging political issues that can arise in our work. These include issues related to jurisdiction, territory, and community with examples drawn from legal classification and the classification of cartographic resources.

Comparing Apples To Apples Oranges: An Exploration Of The Use Of Libguides In Arl Libraries, Rosalinda Hernandez Linares, Anna Marie Johnson

The Southeastern Librarian

The University of Louisville (UofL) Libraries, like thousands of libraries all over the world, use LibGuides content management software from Springshare to create and maintain several hundred subject guide webpages. Although the librarians spend countless hours every year on their guides, a study of guide usage has never been undertaken. As the authors began to look at the usage statistics for their institution, they wondered if examining only statistics from UofL Libraries would be looking at them in a vacuum. The UofL Libraries is a mid-size to large library system with six separate libraries and is a member of the …

Predicting Use: Counter Usage Data Found To Be Predictive Of Ill Use And Ill Use To Be Predictive Of Counter Use., Mitchell Scott

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

More and more libraries are investigating the possibility of breaking apart or unbundling their Big Deal publisher packages. In doing so, libraries acknowledge and ready themselves for the possibility of a significant portion of journal use shifting to interlibrary loan (ILL), and attempt to estimate what this shift from subscription to the ILL mode means in terms of costs. This study investigates three years of ILL usage data for 169 journals prior to undertaking subscriptions and then COUNTER usage for these same journals over a three year subscription period. The result suggests a predictive ratio of ILL requests to COUNTER …

Information Seeking Behavior Of Expats In Asia On Facebook Open Groups, Priyanka Sharma, Sumita Govindan May 2016

Information Seeking Behavior Of Expats In Asia On Facebook Open Groups, Priyanka Sharma, Sumita Govindan

Research Collection Library

With the rise of the global economy and an increasingly mobile global workforce, expat communities are commonplace the world over. Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an increasingly important role in keeping people connected, facilitating the formation of virtual communities based on interest, stage of life, profession and other commonalities. These virtual communities, much in the same way as traditional communities, feature social transactions of different kinds, including information seeking. Using content analysis, our study seeks to delineate patterns of information seeking on three Facebook groups for expats in terms of the categories of information sought and shared, speed of responses …

Managing Volume In Discovery Systems, Aaron Tay May 2016

Managing Volume In Discovery Systems, Aaron Tay

Research Collection Library

The well-established measures of recall and precision are becoming increasingly relevant in WSD systems. Given the way that most people search, which is the simple keyword box that searches all text anywhere in the record, WSD systems will lead to increasingly large recall as we provide access to more linked items. Do we need to be careful about the sheer volume of items to which we can provide access via WSD systems? Do we want these systems to become another Google, where precision of results is not always as accurate as we would like? Are we too obsessed with the …

The Biggest Lies On The Internet: Using Real Life Examples To Help Students Master Information Literacy Concepts, Lucinda Rush May 2016

The Biggest Lies On The Internet: Using Real Life Examples To Help Students Master Information Literacy Concepts, Lucinda Rush

Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Teaching students how the information cycle works is a common instructional goal for academic librarians. Oftentimes we do this by showing them examples of how things work under ideal circumstances. By sharing case studies in information cycles that have short‐circuited, either due to moral panics about the impact of new technologies or due to poor reporting gone bad on social media, we can teach students how to be critical readers of empirical research‐based claims. In this lightening talk, the presenter will provide examples of incorporating these case studies into library instruction settings and share ideas that will help to bridge …

New Metaphors For Networked Learning, Caroline A. Haythornthwaite May 2016

New Metaphors For Networked Learning, Caroline A. Haythornthwaite

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

As networked learning leaves designed spaces and becomes diffused and re-infused through open, online information sharing and knowledge construction, what metaphors will frame our next steps, our next inquiries? In keeping with the conference theme of ‘Looking Back – Moving Forward’, this presentation will engage with where we are in the sea of change, and how our current understanding of networks, learning and knowledge will take us forward into new areas of inquiry. Elsewhere I have been advocating for a reclamation of the term ‘e-learning’ that takes us beyond the design and use of the closed LMS and VLE systems …

Connecting The Libraries And Athletics Through Information Literacy Instruction To Strength And Conditioning Interns, Lara Sapp, K.T. L. Vaughan

Libraries

Goal: To build a relationship between the libraries and athletics by connecting the Health Sciences Librarian and university athletics at James Madison University.

In the summer of 2015, the Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning approached the Health Sciences Librarian to discuss library support for their student interns.

A problem-based, information literacy instruction session was included in the didactic training of Strength and Conditioning interns. A collection of core journals and books was identified and developed. Access to these resources is facilitated through a guide tailored to the interdisciplinary nature of this population.

Mixing It Up: Teaching Information Literacy Concepts Through Different ‘Ways Of Learning’, Lorna M. Dawes May 2016

Mixing It Up: Teaching Information Literacy Concepts Through Different ‘Ways Of Learning’, Lorna M. Dawes

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy (ACRL, 2015) has propelled librarians into new approaches to teaching that concentrate on the concepts and not the procedures or tasks that relate to the effective use of information. It is known that students vary their learning strategies in response to the context of their learning environment (Richardson, 2011) and so it is imperative that instruction facilitates various ways of learning, that can be accommodated in both the small and large classes. Historically librarians have focused on the teaching of the skills: how to search databases, how to find information, how to evaluate …

Are You Hip?: Building The Value Of Libraries And Library Instruction With High-Impact Practices, Ngoc-Yen Tran May 2016

Are You Hip?: Building The Value Of Libraries And Library Instruction With High-Impact Practices, Ngoc-Yen Tran

Faculty and Staff Publications

There is growing evidence that, when done well, High-Impact Educational Practices (HIPs) programs and activities have been shown to be beneficial in increasing rates of retention and engagement amongst students from many backgrounds. Therefore, it is no surprise that higher education institutions are developing activities firmly rooted in the philosophies of the HIPs. Examples of HIPs include common intellectual experiences, learning communities, and service learning. These practices are broad and depending on the institution, they can take on many different forms or activities. In order to encourage participation, these activities are often combined with one another and offered in a …
