National Trends In Adoption Of Information Literacy Standards Versus Framework And Impact On Instructional Best Practices: 2005-2015, Lumarie Guth, Dianna Sachs

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

This session will present results of a national study investigating the ways in which liaison librarians are incorporating the new Framework into their information literacy curriculum, compared with early adoption of the Standards fourteen years ago. The presentation explores connections between adoption of the Framework, assessment, and collaboration with teaching faculty. Despite the controversy surrounding the Framework, data show that librarians are adopting the Framework at a significantly faster pace than they did the Standards.

Don’T Panic, It’S Organic*: Supporting Sustainable Agriculture And Hunger Relief Efforts At Mcquade Library, Catherine Wong, Kathryn Geoffrion Scannell

Faculty Publications

How can libraries support sustainability, wellness, and social justice? Concern for health and the environment has increased interest in sustainable agriculture and the local foods movement. McQuade Library at Merrimack College became a distributor of local foods by partnering with a community supported agriculture (CSA) operation to provide fresh foods to the college and surrounding community. CSAs are a way to directly support local agriculture with sustainable growing practices. Joining a CSA is entering into a relationship with a farm and farmer whereby members are directly supporting the farm by purchasing a farm share. In exchange for providing monetary or …

Developing A (Boutique) Personal Librarian Program For Transfer Students And Other At-Risk Groups, Shannon Kealey, Helene Lafrance

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Transfer students, first-generation college students, those on academic probation, and other at-risk groups may benefit from a Personal Librarian Program more than the average freshman. This presentation describes the planning, implementation, and assessment of a boutique program targeting such groups. We discussed group selection, our collaboration with campus units, the involvement of librarians, marketing activities, the challenges we encountered, and the results of our assessment. We shared best practices for establishing such a program, and discussed our concerns regarding its long-term sustainability. Attendees completed an exercise to explore the viability of such a program at their institutions, and to determine …

Rural Men’S Health, Health Information Seeking, And Gender Identities: A Conceptual Theoretical Review Of The Literature, Bradley C. Hiebert, Beverly Leipert, Sandra Regan, Jacquelyn A. Burkell

FIMS Publications

Beginning as early as 2009, recent shifts in Canadian health care delivery indicate that access to health information is essential to promote and maintain a healthy population. It is important to understand how and where various populations, such as underresourced rural populations, access health information so that public health agencies can develop and deliver appropriate information with, for, and in these contexts. There is a paucity of research that specifically examines how rural Canadian men seek health information; therefore, this review aimed to conceptualize this process based on three dynamic key constructs: health patterns of rural Canadians, health information–seeking behaviors, …

Information Literacy Skills And Awareness Of Electronic Information Resources As Influencing Factors Of Their Use By Postgraduate Students In Two Universities In South-West Nigeria, Chukwuemeka O. Azubuike Mr, Chukwuemeka O. Azubuike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This work focused on Information literacy skills and awareness of electronic information resources as influencing factors of their use by postgraduate students in two Universities in South-West Nigeria.

The need for this study was prompted after observing that most postgraduate students in Nigerian Universities have poor information literacy skills and awareness of electronic information resources which could be due to inadequate end user training, poor search skills, mass irrelevant information, slow internet connectivity, the need to filter the results from the search of information, failure to find information, inaccessibility of some information sources etc. This therefore raises a question of …

Final Post, John C. Hill

Blogging the Library

It’s hard to believe that my last semester at Gettysburg College is almost over. My senior year has gone by so quickly! Yesterday, I helped with the Finals Study Break. We served almost 12 gallons on ice cream to students working in the library. I also managed to win my first game of Uno with Clint, Mallory, Meghan, and Chelsea.

I have learned so much from my internship. Our library is a complex organism with various moving parts, and it takes coordination and hard work to keep things running. I am glad that I was about to focus on one …

This presentation explains what digital literacy is, why it is an important attribute for our students and graduates to develop, and discusses practical ways of creating a mapping between a programme’s assessment methods and the digital literacy graduate attribute.

Ez Come, Ez Go: User-Triggered Error Reporting In Ezproxy, Alevtina Verbovetskaya

Publications and Research

Off-campus access to library resources is easy with EZproxy. But what happens when users hit broken links--which happens much more frequently with a discovery layer in place? Whom do the students contact? How do you get notified of the troublesome links?

Using Google Forms and some Javascript, you can ensure that users having problems accessing e-resources remotely have a way to report the errors, allowing you to fix problems as they are submitted. This presentation will provide a step-by-step tutorial for setting up user-triggered error reporting in EZproxy, as well as provide examples of actual user submissions. Ideas for future …

This presentation will provide an overview of accessible features in library research databases, computer technology, mobile devices, and apps. The presenters will report on their collaboration with Lehman College’s Access and Technology Center (ATC) and Student Disability Services to share how to better approach issues and challenges in order to more successfully support students’ access needs.
