Publishing Undergraduate Research: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?, Allegra Swift

Library Staff Publications and Research

Scholarly communications are evolving rapidly; there are shifts in how research is communicated, what counts for scholarship, and who is doing the communicating. Undergraduates are contributing to the scholarly conversation but with little education in what it means to participate online as a scholar, much less as a global digital citizen. Many faculty members engage in scholarly communication as they always have and are often unaware of the rapid developments in publishing and sharing research. Librarians with responsibilities in publishing, scholarly communication, and instruction are especially challenged to meet these gaps in digital literacy. Publishing undergraduate scholarship can be perceived …

Beta Spaces As A Model For Recontextualizing Reference Services In Libraries, Madelynn Dickerson May 2016

Beta Spaces As A Model For Recontextualizing Reference Services In Libraries, Madelynn Dickerson

Library Staff Publications and Research

Reference services are at a cross-roads. While many academic libraries continue to offer reference services from behind a desk, others are moving to roving and embedded reference models. Meanwhile, libraries are also engaged in the development of collaborative learning spaces—often rich with technology, such as makerspaces and learning labs—but these spaces are often removed from the reference services environment. Beta spaces are another type of collaborative environment used in both public and academic libraries with the potential to infuse energy into the reference space and emphasize research support through experimentation, collaboration, and user contribution. Beta spaces are user-oriented environments with …

Publishing Undergraduate Scholarship: Should You Be Afraid?, Emily Stenberg May 2016

Publishing Undergraduate Scholarship: Should You Be Afraid?, Emily Stenberg

WashU Libraries Presentations

With a growing emphasis on undergraduate engagement in academia, library publishers are discovering that it is vital to negotiate the conflicting directives of publishing, protecting, and promoting undergraduate scholarship. Some faculty are concerned that publishing student work online is harmful to both the student and faculty publishing prospects; while others may make publication a course requirement with little concern about copyright or reputation. Students themselves often have little understanding of privacy and intellectual property. This panel will explore some of the questions and concerns libraries must answer in order to build stronger relationships and successful publishing opportunities for all Emily …

Publishing On A Dime: Opportunities And Challenges In Creating An Oer Publishing Program, Karen Bjork, Marilyn Billings

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

As the rising cost of textbooks continues to burden students, many libraries have begun to facilitate the creation and publishing of Open Educational Resources (OER). The presentation will focus on the opportunities and challenges of creating a library publishing program with limited funding. Lessons learned from open education publishing initiatives will be shared. At Portland State University (PSU), Karen Bjork has worked with faculty on campus to publish eight open access textbooks that have benefited students on an economic and educational level. She will discuss the implementation of the open textbook publishing initiative and share how the library combined the …

Pilot Data Information Literacy Competencies Matrix Scaffolded Across Undergraduate, Graduate And Data Steward Levels, Megan R. Sapp Nelson May 2016

Pilot Data Information Literacy Competencies Matrix Scaffolded Across Undergraduate, Graduate And Data Steward Levels, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Initial work in identifying data management or data information literacy skills went as far as identifying a list of proposed competencies without further differentiation between those competencies, whether by discipline, complexity, or use case. This article describes a significant innovation upon existing competencies by identifying a scaffolding (built upon existing competencies) that moves students progressively from undergraduate training through post graduate coursework and research to post-doctoral work and into the early years of data stewardship. The scaffolding ties together existing research that has been completed in research data management skills and data information literacy with research into the outcomes that …

Communication In Information Seeking Behaviour, Aondoana Daniel Orlu, Kaase Dominic Imeh, Benedict Ifeanyichukwu Okike May 2016

Communication In Information Seeking Behaviour, Aondoana Daniel Orlu, Kaase Dominic Imeh, Benedict Ifeanyichukwu Okike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstracts Much research has been carried out into information behaviour over many years. In every field, researchers study information seeking and use in yet another context (culture, organization, health, community, domain, and so on) without regard to any understandings of information seeking and use in other contexts.” This research set out to address these criticisms by building on existing models from library and information science and from communication studies to develop a new representation of information behaviour – one that encompasses seeking, use and communication of information. The ISCM model has been used to examine information behaviour in health care …

Tracking User Behavior With Google Analytics Events On An Academic Library Website, Amy Vecchione, Deana Brown, Elizabeth Allen, Amanda Baschnagel May 2016

Tracking User Behavior With Google Analytics Events On An Academic Library Website, Amy Vecchione, Deana Brown, Elizabeth Allen, Amanda Baschnagel

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

The primary purpose of an academic library website is to serve as a portal to library-acquired content. Navigational design of a library website affects the user’s ability to find and access content. At Albertsons Library, the goal of the navigational design of the website is to mimic user behavior on the website to help them access information and articles from over 300 different library vendors. Coordinating with different vendors makes tracking the navigational flow of user behavior difficult with the tool Google Analytics. Using the events feature in Google Analytics, the team responsible for web design was able to track …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate similar and different wayfinding strategies used by novice and expert patrons at an academic library.

Design/methodology/approach – The study employed a usability study approach. In total, 12 people, places, or things were identified as important for students to be able to locate within an academic library. Students from one of three groups (high school, freshmen, and seniors) were randomly assigned a scenario requiring them to find the indicated person, place, or thing. Student researchers video recorded participants and took field notes during the wayfinding activity and conducted an interview about …

Don’T Panic, It’S Organic*: Supporting Sustainable Agriculture And Hunger Relief Efforts At Mcquade Library, Catherine Wong, Kathryn Geoffrion Scannell

Librarian Publications

How can libraries support sustainability, wellness, and social justice? Concern for health and the environment has increased interest in sustainable agriculture and the local foods movement. McQuade Library at Merrimack College became a distributor of local foods by partnering with a community supported agriculture (CSA) operation to provide fresh foods to the college and surrounding community. CSAs are a way to directly support local agriculture with sustainable growing practices. Joining a CSA is entering into a relationship with a farm and farmer whereby members are directly supporting the farm by purchasing a farm share. In exchange for providing monetary or …
