Faculty Pub Night At The William H. Hannon Library: Highlighting Faculty Works Through Creative Programming, Jamie Hazlitt, John M. Jackson
Librarian Publications & Presentations
Creative, interdisciplinary partnership and collaboration with university faculty is an essential function of every academic library, whether for course design and integration of information literacy in the curriculum, strategically building the library collections, or designing programming for the community. Over the past six years at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a program created to highlight and promote faculty publications and creative works has evolved into a keystone of our annual programming lineup. The series, called Faculty Pub Night, provides LMU faculty with the opportunity to share their work with students, university staff, other faculty …
Emotional Intelligence Of Library Personnel And Library Work Productivity In Selected Academic Libraries In Oyo State, Nigeria, John Adeboye Oyeboade
Emotional Intelligence Of Library Personnel And Library Work Productivity In Selected Academic Libraries In Oyo State, Nigeria, John Adeboye Oyeboade
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a capacity that profoundly affects all other abilities in every human being, either facilitating or interfering with them. This study investigated emotional intelligence of library personnel and library work productivity in selected Academic Libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Responses were generated from 186 library personnel across eight (8) selected academic libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. The questionnaire was used for data collection. Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, it was found out that Self-Awareness (r = .521**; P < 0.05), Self-Management (r = .154*; P < 0.05), Social Awareness (r = .192**; P < 0.05), and Relationship Management (r = .790**; P < 0.05) were positively correlated with Library Work Productivity. Likewise, Emotional Intelligence (r = .085*; P < 0.05) has significant positive relationship with Library Work Productivity. The ANOVA showed that self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management jointly and significantly predict library work productivity by 52.1%. The paper therefore, recommended academic library Managements can therefore include quality EI training and coaching in their on the job training programs. Those who work extra hours to make up for yet to be realised goals should adequately be motivated. Finally, Emotional Intelligence Quotients should form part of the criteria for employing library personnel in Nigerian academic libraries.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Polytechnic libraries play pivotal roles in the sustenance and advancement of the academic activities of their parent institutions. They bridge the gap between the vast information resources available in different disciplines and polytechnics through their services. This article evaluates the use of polytechnic libraries in Nigeria focusing on the Federal Polytechnic Offa library, Kwara State, Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 250 respondents from 1000 registered library users; while 230 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved representing a response rate of 92%. The analysis of data was based on frequency counts, percentages, mean score and confidence …

Personal Research Sets The Stage For Change, Jennifer L.A. Whelan, Alicia S. Hansen
Staff publications
Starting in 2011, implementation of Personal Research Sessions, or PRS, not only showed librarians at College of the Holy Cross the success of one-on-one research appointments, but also led the reference program on a path of service-centered changes. This path includes fewer hours on the physical desk, a system of on-call reference shifts, an increase in reference student worker training, a semester-to-semester increase in PRS, and new goals for assessment. We discuss the state of student research at Holy Cross and our approach to reference service
The Default Art Of Classifying The Occult, Brett B. Bodemer
The Default Art Of Classifying The Occult, Brett B. Bodemer
Library Scholarship
Even as the world of information moves increasingly away from print, academic librarians and patrons spend significant time in neighborhoods of books organized by Library of Congress Classification. Close attention to specific neighborhoods and historical inquiry into their organization opens windows into past and present constructions of knowledge. This essay examines one such neighborhood – the latter ranges of BF, and particularly its tail end, Occult Sciences. It explores the creation of this neighborhood in a deliberately recursive fashion, and the journey to determine how such content came to be collocated by the Library of Congress leads through other classification …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Introduction 11 This report1 documents the Strategic Thinking and Design work that the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) engaged in from the fall of 2013 through the end of 2015. Fueled by the deep desire of the ARL membership to rise to the challenges facing higher education in the 21st century, and with grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Association engaged in an unprecedented project to reimagine the future of the research library and then reshape ARL, its organization, to help bring that future into being.

Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, Cyndi Shein, Emily Lapworth
Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, Cyndi Shein, Emily Lapworth
Journal of Western Archives
Shein and Lapworth demonstrate how employing “scan-and-return” practices to strengthen and diversify archival collections is a creative and responsible way to provide researchers with equitable and ongoing access to a more inclusive and democratic historical record. The authors review some of the main archival theories and practices of the postcustodial era to show how their position is built on professional values and widely-accepted premises. They explain how and why UNLV Special Collections has joined a community of practice that validates stewardship of digital surrogates in support of the preeminent mandate of archives to preserve and provide broad access to cultural …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Oregon libraries provide an incredible array of resources and services, but sometimes we struggle to educate our users and each other about all that is available. Over the past several years, many libraries have become more intentional in our efforts to market and promote our offerings, through traditional PR and advertisements as well as newer approaches like social media. However, we may lack the formal training and expertise to do this well—marketing is not a class offered in all library school programs—and, even with appropriate training, we may lack the budget and staff to implement a large-scale marketing program.

Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush
Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Introduction
Social networking sites (SNS) have been integrated seamlessly into our everyday lives, and college students are one of their biggest consumers (Lenhart, et. al. 2010). Just as consumers of Starbucks have been trained to speak the language of the corporation, ordering “venti” instead of “large”, and consumers of smart phones have come to rely on them in their every-day lives for things like directions, instant access to email, fitness apps, and more, social media users have been trained to intuitively expect and respond to things on their SNS in day-to-day life. The skills that our students have developed through …

Theoretical Modelling To Explain Lecturers’ Use Of Educational Support Systems For Teaching In University-Based Library Schools In Nigeria: Extending The Technology Acceptance Model (Tam)., Taiwo Adetoun Akinde
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
This work is an attempt at theoretical modelling. The result of a search for a theoretical framework and a conceptual model to explain lecturers’ use of Educational Support Systems (ESS) for teaching in university-based library schools in Nigeria. The applicability, similarity and relevance of Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were discussed. TAM was found to be the most appropriate framework for the research based on its variables and/or constructs; hence, a research model, an adaptation of TAM was drawn and used to guide the research. Based on the …

Pathways To Open Access : The Story Of An Institutional Repository And How We Built It., Dwayne Buttler, Rachel Howard, Sarah Frankel
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The central purpose of an institutional repository (IR) is providing open access to scholarship. That scholarship originates primarily through the work of faculty and students at research institutions, leading research libraries to embrace IRs and the scholarly communication movement. IRs typically include student theses and dissertations and faculty publications but sometimes extend far beyond to institutional records and documents. Launching an IR requires significant collaborative work across disparate specialties and institutional structures to establish policies, workflows, configure metadata and technology for retrieval, and fashion outreach and ongoing support to the administrators and ultimately provide mediated support to the scholars who …

The Wild West No More: Preserving 40 Years Of Electronic Records At The University Of Wyoming American Heritage Center, Tyler G. Cline
The Wild West No More: Preserving 40 Years Of Electronic Records At The University Of Wyoming American Heritage Center, Tyler G. Cline
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The University of Wyoming American Heritage Center (AHC) provides access to all unrestricted collections, per its Mission Statement. However, over the past 40 years, the AHC has acquired born-digital collection material on physical media that it has been unable to provide access to. In the summer of 2014, the AHC undertook a project to migrate all born-digital records to a secure server, thereby creating the means to provide access to the material. After surveying collections databases and finding aids, the Digital Archivist and a graduate intern successfully ingested 346 pieces of digital media from 75 collections. The project was successful …

"Is This Something We Can Do?": Exploring The Possibilities Of Faculty/Librarian Collaboration, Patrick Wohlmut, Kena Avila
Faculty & Staff Presentations
The Jereld R. Nicholson Library’s teaching focus follows a strong introductory model, being well integrated in the first-year seminar classes and introductions to the major, though not necessarily across the upper division classes. This presentation tells the story of a collaboration during the course of an upper division education class at Linfield College in the fall of 2016. In addition to presenting some of the research on departmental faculty/librarian collaboration, Patrick Wohlmut and Kena Avila discussed the unique factors that made this collaboration one that was fulfilling, useful, and educational for both the teachers and the students. Though the class …

On Structures And Self-Work: Locating Anti-Racist Politics In Lis, David James Hudson, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
The tension between the individual and the structural continues to be a key issue in racial politics. This tension has marked recent discussions on the dog-whistle demagoguery of Donald Trump, the racialization of violence through Thug/Loner/Terrorist media narratives, the accountability of police brutality perpetrators, and beyond. The degree to which racialized power and difference are understood to represent individual phenomena and/or structural phenomena — and the anti-racist implications of such critical understandings — have long been sites of contention in anti-racist discourse. As Goldberg (1993) has demonstrated, the liberal racial politics that has dominated anti-racist thought has tended to locate …

Librarian and Staff Presentations
Open Access (OA) is “the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the right to use these articles fully in the digital environment.” (SPARC, 2014) While much of the conversation about OA centers on business models, economics, workflow processes, institutional policy, and the transformative influence on academic publishing, limited dialogue occurs about best practices to guide educational and research institutions when planning to develop a policy on Open Access.
In 2015, the Dean’s Council at Stephen F Austin State University (SFASU) agreed to support Open Access on campus for research data and publications. The SFA Scholar Works, the …

Race Matters: Recruitment & Retention: Diversifying The Library Profession, Wilma L. Jones
Publications and Research
Since the implementation of affirmative action, increasing diversity of faculty and staff continues to be a priority for many higher education institutions. However, while we recognize the value of having a diverse workforce, we need to pay more attention to recruitment and retention activities that would yield better results in outreach and opportunities for underrepresented-excluded groups who wish to become part of the library profession. How can CUNY library leaders help develop an inclusive environment: one conducive to retention of a diverse workforce, starting with the role of Search Committees, to mentors within and outside the library, to diversity professional …
