The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller
The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller
Faculty Publications
In a period of fiscal constraint, when assumptions about the library as place are being challenged, administrators question the contribution of every expense to student success. Libraries have been successful in migrating resources and services to a digital environment accessible beyond the library. What is the role of the library as place when users do not need to visit the building to utilize library services and resources? We argue that the college library building’s core role is as a space for collaborative learning and community interaction which cannot be jettisoned in the new normal.

Last month, during a family trip to Yellowstone National Park, my 9-year-old son asked how high the water from Old Faithful was spraying and why it was so hot and steamy. Armed with my smartphone and the Concise Encyclopedia Britannica application , I was able to touch, search, and tell: 160 feet high, and proximity to magma.
Did I need an e-book app on a mobile device to answer these questions for him? Probably not. A signpost or park ranger could have informed me, but the beauty of my solution was that I easily found the information at an altitude …

The University of Mississippi Library created a profile to provide linking from Google Scholar to library resources in 2005. Although Google Scholar does not provide usage statistics for institutions, use of Google Scholar is clearly evident in looking at library link resolver logs. The purpose of this project is to examine users of Google Scholar using existing data from interlibrary loan transactions and library website click-through logs and analytics. Questions about user status and discipline as well as behaviors related to use of other library resources, are explored.

Technology In Practice. Tutorials That Matter: Learning Objects In The Library Instruction Program, Meredith G. Farkas
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
In this article the author discusses the benefits of library online tutorials. She suggests that while many academic libraries offer online learning tools for patrons, such as interactive sessions and online versions of paper handouts, many other libraries do not recognize the potential impact of online tutorials. Topics include the replacement of face-to-face instruction due to slowed staff growth and the Library Online Basic Orientation (LOBO) offered at North Carolina State University.

Shopping Carts And Student Employees: How Student Committees Can Bring Innovative Ideas To Academic Libraries, Quinn Galbraith, Sara D. Smith
Faculty Publications
In 1999, ABC’s Nightline asked IDEO, a well-known innovation and design consultancy, to redesign the shopping cart in five days. While the challenge of re-imagining a cultural icon “inexplicably stuck in a sort of an innovation limbo”1 drew enough interest, even more compelling was the process the IDEO team used to research, brainstorm, and design the new model. The IDEO team threw out middle-management hierarchies based on experience or seniority—the project leader, who had only worked with IDEO for six years, was chosen for his skill in leading groups. The team members came from many disciplines, including psychology, architecture, linguistics, …

Relevance Of Ranganathan's Laws Of Library Science In Library Marketing, R. K. Bhatt
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Marketing for libraries has become an important topic in libraries in India. Philip Kotler is credited with creating the philosophy of marketing management. When we study the marketing process and marketing management, we find that many of the tasks in the process have already been advocated by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, in his book Five Laws of Library Science. This study examines how the five laws can be used in marketing LIS products and services.

This research aims to examine URL decay of articles published in Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA). To do this, at first, we extracted all issues of JMLA from 2002 to 2008 and calculated number of all Web citations (URLs). Afterwards, we checked decay or availability of individual cited URLs. Results of these tests were then compiled and analyzed to examine reasons for failure as well as to obtain the half-life value of Web citations in JMLA. The study revealed that 76% of articles have Web citations and each article on average uses 5 URLs. From 1049 cited URLs, …

The realities of the present era of globalization and information and communication technologies (ICT) culminating to the African Virtual Library and information Network (AVLIN) have made it expedient that African information professionals should be able to develop, showcase and make accessible African indigenous information to the knowledge world. This literature- based opinion paper has tried to identify with the view of the conference organizers that “Major digital initiatives involving African content are currently being undertaken by non-African organizatiosn without widely accepted protocols and agreement” and therefore, argues that there is a serious need for a theoretical and policy framework necessary …
