Collection Development Of Hiv/Aids Information Resources In American Libraries, Joseph G. Andrews Jr Jul 2011

Collection Development Of Hiv/Aids Information Resources In American Libraries, Joseph G. Andrews Jr

School of Information Student Research Journal

HIV/AIDS remains an incurable epidemic in the United States that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM) and African Americans. Library and information science (LIS) professionals can play a vital role in keeping these higher risk groups informed about preventing HIV/AIDS and living with the disease, through a variety of current information resources that addresses their specific questions. This paper reviews collection development policies proposed by LIS professionals and library agencies since the late 1980s, and evaluates how such policies took higher-risk user groups into consideration. The findings of this paper are that collection development policies have become …

Ethical Considerations In Web 2.0 Archives, Antoinette E. Baker Jul 2011

Ethical Considerations In Web 2.0 Archives, Antoinette E. Baker

School of Information Student Research Journal

In April 2010, the Internet company Twitter announced that it had granted its entire archive of “Tweets” to the Library of Congress. These Tweets are typically generated by public users, who may or may not understand or expect that their submissions will be archived by a government agency. Archives of Web 2.0 material raise new ethical considerations for archivists, who must balance interests in preserving material with privacy interests of users who generated the content. Archivists can address these concerns by requiring corporate donors to fully disclose the nature of the archive to users and by allowing users to opt-out …

Discovery Tools And Local Metadata Requirements In Academic Libraries, Mary S. Wood

School of Information Student Research Journal

As the second decade of the twenty-first century commences, academic librarians who work to promote collection access must not only contend with a vast array of content available in a wide range of formats, but they must also ensure that new technologies developed to accommodate user search behaviors yield satisfactory outcomes. Next generation discovery tools are designed to streamline the search process and facilitate better search results by incorporating metadata from proprietary and local collections, then by providing relevancy-ranked results. This paper investigates the implications of discovery tool use for accessing materials housed in institutional repositories and special collections, in …

Data Security On Mobile Devices- A Higher Education Perspective, David Reis Jul 2011

Data Security On Mobile Devices- A Higher Education Perspective, David Reis

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Mobile devices, both personal and Jefferson-owned, are being used everywhere on campus. Everyone knows that patient health information should not be stored on mobile devices, but did you know there are similar restrictions for student information?

If you access your Jefferson email from your mobile device and it contains student email on it, or in your address book, you need to know the requirements to protect that data.

Is your device secure?

AISR and JeffIT are hosting a presentation that will address important data security steps you should take to protect the information on your mobile device.

Beyond ‘‘Green Buildings:’’ Exploring The Effects Of Jevons’ Paradox On The Sustainability Of Archival Practices, Mark D. Wolfe Jul 2011

Beyond ‘‘Green Buildings:’’ Exploring The Effects Of Jevons’ Paradox On The Sustainability Of Archival Practices, Mark D. Wolfe

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The sustainability of archival institutions will be greatly affected by attempts to mitigate their carbon footprint to meet the challenges of global climate change. This paper explores how recordkeeping practices may enhance or undermine the sustainability of archives. To enhance sustainability, it is a common practice to increase the efficiency of recordkeeping practices. However, increases to efficiency may lead to a phenomenon known as Jevons’ Paradox. Jevons’ Paradox occurs when improvements in efficiency to a system or process result in an increase in use (instead of a decrease) of a resource. The failure of the paperless office demonstrates Jevons’ Paradox, …

Past Perfect: Historical Fiction And Readers' Advisory Service, Sarah L. Johnson

How can it be found within library collections, given that it's such a broad category? Answers to these questions are discussed, along with an overview of the diverse subgenres of historical fiction. Numerous examples of benchmark titles and authors are provided for each subgenre. Appeal factors for historical fiction, hot topics and themes, …

Strategic Planning For Sustaining User-Generated Content In Digital Collections, Cory K. Lampert, Su Kim Chung Jul 2011

Strategic Planning For Sustaining User-Generated Content In Digital Collections, Cory K. Lampert, Su Kim Chung

Library Faculty Research

Experimentation and exploration are hallmarks of innovative libraries, but as experiments become on-going projects and investigations become long-term commitments, it is important to gain perspective on how the roles of librarians, archivists, and information professionals are changing. As social computing becomes routine for computer users, libraries of all types are responding to these new expectations by building interactive communication features into their on-line collections. Social features and user-generated content raise several compelling issues as organizations strive to balance agile adaptation to the ever-evolving user environment with the realities of limited staff resources and greater administrative expectations. This paper examines the …

Sustainable Collaborations For Opal Depository Collections: Meeting The Needs, Bridging The Gaps, Jane Wu Jul 2011

Sustainable Collaborations For Opal Depository Collections: Meeting The Needs, Bridging The Gaps, Jane Wu

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The United States federal government publications were little known and underutilized in the majority of the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) depository libraries, as the majority of the collections were not in the online catalog before 1998. The limited financial and human resources of these small academic libraries demanded effective collaboration among the libraries, the commercial vendors and service providers, the local administrations, and the library staff members to automate the collection. However, making collaboration work at operational and strategic levels can be a daunting management challenge.
