Adequate physical facilities such as furniture and lighting systems are essential for any meaningful academic work to be achieved in a university library. This paper assesses the adequacy and level of physical facilities in federal university libraries in Nigeria to determine the extent to which they affect undergraduate students' use of the university libraries. The study population was 1,453 undergraduates from across Arts, Education, Engineeing, Law, Science, and Social Science faculties in the selected universities and the survey research method was used for the study. Peers Don't Let Peers Perish: Encouraging Research And Scholarship Among Junior Library Faculty, Jill Cirasella, Maura A. Smale

Traditional mentoring has many benefits, but peer mentoring can also offer a valuable support structure along the road to tenure. The Junior Faculty Research Roundtable (JFRR) is a peer-mentoring group for junior library faculty at the colleges and graduate schools of the City University of New York (CUNY). Created to encourage junior library faculty in their scholarly endeavors, JFRR organizes professional development events and facilitates in-person and online conversations on research, writing, and publishing. Now two years old, the group has transformed a large number of scattered junior library faculty into a supportive community of scholars.

Despite growing up with technology, are college freshmen well prepared for library research, or does their computer savvy actually put them at a disadvantage? Do other factors such as library anxiety affect students’ research experience? How can secondary educators better prepare their students for the leap from a small school library to a large college or university library? Analysis Of Lis Research Articles 1997-2007: Critical Thinking, Gender, And Education, Fahimeh Babalhavaeji, Mitra Ghiasi

This article reports on research into the quality of critical thinking factors in research articles of Iranian researchers in library and information science (LIS) over a period of 10 years (1997-2007). The research method includes content analysis, a checklist built on Facion's critical thinking factors, and the international test of Paul and Elder. The collected data are analyzed by using descriptive, analytical, and deductive methods. The research population includes 138 research articles examined based on systematic stratified random sampling selected out of 521 articles. Information Sources Used By Postgraduate Students In Library And Information Science: A Citation Analysis Of Dissertations, R. I. Echezona, V. N. Okafor, Scholastica C. Ukwoma

This paper is a citation analyses that assesses references of theses submitted to the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka from 1997 to 2007 The results revealed that journals are cited more than other information resources, and online resources cited were very rarely from 1997-2005, but increased from 2006 and 2007. College and Research Libraries is the most cited journal. The major subject area covered in their research is library management/administration; user studies, information communication technology, and collection development while bibliometrics, preservation, special and public libraries were less commonly researched.

It is a gateway to a wide range of online information resources, each of which provides tools that help navigate the contents. Lis Professionals’ Staffing Patterns: Pakistani Public Sector Universities, Nosheen Fatima Warraich, Kanwal Ameen

Competent staff in university libraries are essential for the delivery of quality services and research productivity. This study explores the staffing patterns of LIS professionals in the university libraries (ULs). It also investigates the level of satisfaction of library directors with the available professional staff. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 20 public sector ULs of the Punjab province. The findings reveal that most libraries (79%) are understaffed (including unfilled vacancies) and library directors are not satisfied with the number of available staff. All libraries used print advertisements to publicize job vacancies.

This presentation provides a short historical survey of the development of library cataloging in the Western world and includes information on the gradual growth of cooperation among libraries in terms of using shared standardized cataloging rules and classification systems. Contemporary cooperation in cataloging is also covered focusing on cataloging facilitated by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), OhioLINK, and the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) Consortium. Cooperative cataloging and metadata initiatives are becoming increasingly important in the United States and internationally.

This study examines news articles and anti-discrimination ordinances that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) communities in the four most populous counties from five Southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The possible impact of such policies on the collection of non-fiction young adult materials in the public libraries in those counties is explored. Urban universities often incorporate concepts of community engagement in their mission. This study investigates Wayne State University Library System’s redesigned information literacy tutorial: re:Seach. Seventy-two students participating in the 2010 Wayne State Federal TRIO Student Support Service Summer Residential Program participated in the questionnaire. The questionnaire measured student learning via a multiple choice knowledge based test. Confidence and satisfaction were also measured using a five point Likert scale. Students received an overall average score of 71% on the knowledge portion and student responses varied on the confidence and satisfaction portions of the questionnaire. Queens, New York is a diverse urban environment and home to many recent immigrants and low-income populations, which are known to have lower access to healthcare and are thus at higher risk for a wide range of negative health outcomes. Queens residents face serious cancer disparities, with late-stage cancer detection rates for breast, colorectal and prostate cancers far surpassing national averages. Based on a motion initiated by the Implementation Group on the Library of Congress Working Group Report, at ALA Midwinter 2010 the ALA and ALCTS Boards of Directors passed a resolution designating 2010 as the Year of Cataloging Research. The Report of the LC Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control addressed several goals, including “Work to develop a stronger, more rigorous culture of formal evaluation, critique and validation, and build a cumulative research agenda and evidence base. Creating Collections Through Collaboration: An Innovative Digital Library Project In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Laurie Kutner, Cindy Dykes, Stefanie Havelka

The proposed presentation will focus on a successful cross-cultural and cross-institutional collaborative model, involving four institutions, that was developed to create digital library collections of research-based information generated in the Monteverde Zone in Costa Rica. Addressing a need for the Monteverde community to have easy access to locally-produced research-based information, the digital collections contain unpublished research documents produced by area international study programs focusing on local sustainable community development, community health, and tropical ecology.
