Libraries don’t “buy” most e-books the way they buy print books; they license them. That reality is at the crossroads of budgetary constraints and patron satisfaction in modern libraries. With print, a library typically pays once, owns the copy, and lends it until it wears out. With e-books, publishers and intermediaries, like platforms such as OverDrive, commonly offer time-limited or loan-limit-ed terms (for example, a license that expires after a set number of checkouts or after a set period), can impose embargoes, and can set prices far above consumer retail. Library database vendors have recently begun introducing AI tools to their platforms at an increasing pace. While some of these tools cannot be turned off, some can, leaving libraries to make the decision with little in the way of past practice to rely on. There has been considerable research done on the generally available large language models (LLMs) but less on methodologies for evaluating platform add-on tools. This paper outlines the development of such an evaluation process at an R2 academic library in the US, from conception to implementation. It has been revised with a new introduction and learning objectives and section summaries. It also includes sections on common research assignments such as research plans, research logs, note-taking, and annotated bibliographies. This chapter explores the role of compassionate care as a critical leadership practice in the library workplace, with a particular focus on academic health sciences libraries. Drawing on the author’s lived experience as a Black woman library leader and on over two decades in the profession, the chapter situates compassionate care at the intersection of compassionate and inclusive leadership and organizational well-being. In the context of ongoing collective trauma, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial violence, political polarization, and sustained attacks on libraries, the chapter argues that compassion must move beyond empathy to intentional, actionable leadership. The Library of Congress Classification (LCC), developed by Herbert Putnam in 1897, remains the predominant system for organizing materials in U.S. academic libraries. By integrating innovations with earlier classification systems by Charles Cutter and Melvil Dewey, the LCC divides human knowledge into 21 classes, each represented by alphabetic codes. While Psychology is classified under BF and social sciences under HQ, materials on African American Psychology and African American Social Science are primarily cataloged under Class E—History of America—specifically E185.625 and E185.86. This placement raises critical questions about the appropriateness of categorizing these subjects as historical rather than disciplinary. Given African …

This autoethnographic study explores the disorienting dilemma that a technical services librarian experienced while alternating between working behind the scenes to fulfill professional responsibilities and teaching in the library to meet organizational expectations as a faculty member. The analysis of personal data accumulated during the tenure track period reveals three themes: teaching as learning to become, teaching as learning to challenge the system, and teaching as learning to research. Reflection focuses on three themes interconnected by the concept and practice of mindful learning. With the acknowledgement of limitations, this autoethnography concludes it was the self-reflective lifelong learning mindset that helped …

Medical Students for Size Inclusivity (MSSI) is a volunteer-led organization of medical students across the United States challenging weight bias in healthcare and advocating for equitable, weight-inclusive care (https://sizeinclusivemedicine.org). Recently MSSI has developed three “informed consent resources” about intentional weight loss interventions, focusing on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications (such as Ozempic©), bariatric surgery, and pediatric weight management. The three resources are grounded in weight-neutral care and are designed to supplement information from healthcare providers by sharing more nuanced information about the research on the interventions, potential alternatives, and approaches to health that are not focused on body weight. …

As research appointments continue to be a service offered across reference departments, it is important to regularly assess their effectiveness at meeting patrons’ needs and to seek improvement. To do this, patrons were surveyed after scheduling a research appointment to understand their reasons for scheduling an appointment, preferred formats, expectations, knowledge gained, and overall satisfaction. The findings revealed that most patrons were students, and the most common way to learn about appointments was from instructors. Patrons primarily scheduled appointments online, citing convenience and location as main reasons for their choice. Their main expectation was to learn effective search strategies. Recommendations …

The historical narrative of the United States is deeply marked by systemic racial discrimination, particularly against African Americans. White Americans employed race-based strategies to oppress and marginalize African Americans, denying them access to professional organizations and opportunities for socioeconomic advancement. This exclusion extended to the field of librarianship, where African Americans were barred from professional networks, reinforcing perceptions of the profession as a reflection of mainstream racial inequities. Marcus Garvey, social activist and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the early twentieth century, has been widely studied for his Pan-African approach to the social upliftment of Black communities during a period marked by segregation and systemic injustice. His messages of empowerment attracted global attention and supported the growth of a movement that reached more than one million members worldwide. While Garvey and the UNIA have been examined from historical, political, and cultural perspectives, they have not been systematically studied through the lens of information and communication behavior. This article, co-authored by a high school librarian and a Latin teacher describes a highly successful collaboration at the high school level designed to enhance the curriculum and promote the role of the library as a continuous learning environment. The “Homerathon” read-aloud attracted nearly 140 participants over a four-day period in 2024. Benefits included engaging students in the act of reading, increasing awareness and understanding of a classical work of literature, and highlighting the role of the school library as a vibrant learning hub. A trauma-informed library is a library that adopts practices and policies designed to understand, recognize, and respond to the impact of trauma on individuals who use its services. This approach aims to create a safe and supportive environment for patrons who may have experienced trauma, such as abuse, violence, poverty, discrimination, and natural disasters. Key principles of trauma-informed care are promoting safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, and empowerment in all aspects of library operations and interactions. This article details the approaches taken to initiate trauma-informed principles into the Special Collections Department at Alabama State University.

This case study examines how the City University of New York (CUNY) developed guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in the creation of open educational resources (OER). CUNY is the nation’s largest urban public university, with 26 campuses distributed across New York City’s five boroughs. CUNY includes 7 community colleges, 11 senior colleges (3 of which are comprehensives), and 8 graduate, honors, and professional schools. Since the 2017-2018 academic year, CUNY’s OER Initiative has received $4 million a year of state funding to support the creation and use of OER across the university system. The OER Initiative …

In February 2025 the Eastern Michigan University Archives joined the JSTOR initiative Project Odyssey as a beta community partner. The intention of Project Odyssey was to: “leverage generative AI to assist libraries and archives in processing their digital collections. This solution addresses frequent bottlenecks in the creation of descriptive metadata—a vital component for preserving and making collections discoverable.”
