The evaluation of university library collections must include quantitative as well as qualitative measures. This research seeks to demonstrate a relationship between quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Kenneth Dike Library collection in the sciences. It is hypothesised that, as a result of this relationship, the larger the collection, the more likely it is that it can support PhD research in the sciences.

Reading gardens (taman bacaan) are a unique form of community libraries that have sprouted up in Indonesia since the year 2001. They represent the culmination of more than a century of development of both private and government-led efforts to bring books to people. This article surveys the current situation of community libraries in Indonesia, using statistics from the government, as well as a survey conducted among community libraries in the greater Jakarta area. At the 2008 WALE conference in Olympia, I gave a presentation titled "Moving Forward in Your Job (Even if You Want to Stay in One Place)." I thought fifteen, maybe twenty, people who were fairly new to library work and interested in changing position classifications would show up. Surprisingly, the room was packed. I spoke from an administrator's point of view about two aspects of employees: level of competence and degree of engagement with their work. Some employees have low competence but high engagement ("newbies" fall into this category); others have high competence and high engagement (AKA "shining stars"). Can …

Throw Out Those Paper Bookplates! The Digital Bookplate Program At The University Of Western Ontario, Cheryl Martin, Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries (The University of Western Ontario) has recently developed a digital bookplate program. We create a digital bookplate in Fireworks (a graphics design program) using a set of standard templates. Then we link a web page with information about the bookplate to a search, which displays all of the material purchased for that donation in the catalogue. The donor is provided with the web-link and can view the bookplate and the catalogue records for the material that was purchased or donated.

Approval Plans, Discipline Change, And The Importance Of Human Mediated Book Selection, John Brantley

This study examines holdings of 21 members of the Association of Research Libraries for books reviewed in American Historical Review. The study asserts that approval plans are inadequate for collecting from small publishers or from scholarship that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Although approval plans increase efficiency in collection development, the need for expert selection cannot be overstated. Results indicated that small publisher’s books were less likely to be in libraries than university press publisher’s books, and that history monographs are frequently classified outside disciplinary boundaries, and are therefore invisible to approval plans that define disciplines based on classification systems.

Interlibrary Loan Patron Use Patterns: An Examination Of Borrowing Requests At A Mid-Sized Academic Library, Bradley Tolppanen, Janice Derr

The results of a recently conducted study of interlibrary loan fee-based borrowing requests are presented in this article. The study examined 3,074 borrowing requests completed over a three-year period from January 2007 to December 2009. An analysis of the statistics was made to determine patron behavior in submitting requests and the types of materials being requested.

In this article the author suggests that prospective librarians must establish a positive online identity and presence as part of the job search process. She proposes that individuals assess themselves as a brand to be marketed. She points to the influence of personal profiles on online social networks such as Facebook and Twitter on employer hiring decisions.

A Conceptual Framework Of Information Requirements For Scientists Using Human Biological Samples, Sujin Kim

Introduction. This study was undertaken to develop an information requirement framework for scientists who use biological samples and related data in their research.

Method. A self-reporting questionnaire completed by 137 respondents was used to collect data regarding demographics, bio-sample management, bio-sample use and requirements, data requirements, and work and research-related roles and activities.

Analysis. Descriptive and TwoStep Cluster analyses were used to analyse the survey data necessary for developing a framework of information requirements.

Spontaneous Group Decision Making In Distributed Collaborative Learning: Toward A New Research Direction., Geoffrey Liu

This paper attempts to identify and establish spontaneous group decision making in collaborative learning as a new research direction, with particular attention to collaborative learning in distributed online environments. After a brief introduction, related concepts and theories are examined for differentiation of interpretation. The concept of “spontaneous group decision making” is established in the context of collaborative learning. Literature review is conducted to glean anecdotal observations from past research to identify potentially influential factors, and a diagram framework is proposed to charter the territory. Assessing The Impact Of Gender And Race On Earnings In The Library Science Labor Market., Darren L. Sweeper, Steven A. Smith

University Libraries Scholarship and Creative Works

Using data from the 2003 National Survey of College Graduates, this paper examines earnings in the library science labor market and assesses the impact of gender on the income attainment process. We use this cross-sectional dataset to determine if there are significant income differences between male and female library science professionals. The approach taken in this paper is to build a theoretical model of income attainment for librarians. We then discuss the methodology used to analyze the data and test the model, followed by a discussion of the results and recommendations for further research.
