Evaluating the trustworthiness of Internet-based or other digital information has become an essential 21st century skill. The iSkills™ assessment, from Educational Testing Service (ETS), purports to measure such digital evaluation skills, along with other digital literacy skills. In this work, we use an argument-based approach to assessment validation to investigate the extent to which iSkills test scores can support inferences about the ability of college students to evaluate information in a digital environment. Eighty-eight undergraduates responded to iSkills assessment tasks and to more open-ended "naturalistic" tasks. With the vast amount of information available today, information literacy (IL) education is a critical component of undergraduate education necessary to prepare students for tomorrow's world. Instructors want students to demonstrate critical thinking skills and are often disappointed with student submissions resulting from undeveloped IL skills. Library Instruction programs are often tasked with addressing this educational need and often struggle to find a scalable method to provide IL instruction to the student body. Information Literacy Rubrics Within The Disciplines, Britt A. Fagerheim, Flora G. Shrode

This paper reports the results of a pilot project in which the authors developed rubrics for assessing information literacy in the disciplines and examined whether rubrics are a feasible and effective method for librarians to assess their students' information literacy skills. We developed rubrics for capstone classes in chemistry and psychology based on benchmarks appropriate for each major. We then used the rubrics to assess the research and information literacy skills the students displayed in their papers or projects.

Authentic assessment of student learning outcomes is much in demand. This paper reviews a variety of assessment methods that measure cognitive, behavioral, and affective levels of learning that can be used to design library class instruction and assessments to improve student learning and teaching of information literacy concepts. The intentional use of these methods to assess undergraduate student learning in many disciplines through working collaboratively with faculty and integrating the assessments in a learner-centered environment is discussed.

Like other college and university departments, academic libraries are increasingly expected to assess their services and facilities. This article describes an initial step in the development of a comprehensive assessment program for library instruction in the Brooklyn College Library. A pre- and post-quiz were developed based on the curriculum for a required library session in an introductory English composition course. The quizzes were designed to establish a baseline for student knowledge of information literacy as well as measure the effect of library instruction on student learning. Using Assessment Data To Inform Library Instruction For First Year Students, Julie Gilbert

Seeking ways to develop information literacy skills among first year college students, librarians at our institution developed a pilot program to measure the effects of a multiple library instruction session module on students' research skills in the first semester. The pilot program incorporates a substantial assessment model consisting of a pretest, posttest, and a citation analysis of final papers. Results demonstrate that students who had multiple library instruction sessions during the first semester report higher levels of confidence and greater use of library resources than students who had only a single instruction session.

Academic librarians throughout higher education add value to the teaching and learning missions of their institutions though information literacy instruction. To demonstrate the full impact of librarians on students in higher education, librarians need comprehensive information literacy assessment plans, composed of instructional program-level and outcome-level components, that summarize the purpose of information literacy assessment, emphasize the theoretical basis of their assessment efforts, articulate specific information literacy goals and outcomes, describe the major assessment methods and tools used to capture evidence of student learning, report assessment results, and highlight improvements made as a consequence of learning assessment.

Private university students are a unique population in Nigeria. The organization and administration of these institutions, the mode of admission, and facilities in place account for the uniqueness of their students compared with their counterparts in government institutions. Students in private institutions are provided with facilities that will enhance their academic performance, which includes hostel accommodation, sporting activities, a well-equipped library, information and communication technology (Internet access), and others. Payments for such facilities are always included in tuition fees. It is the aim of this research to determine the level of accessibility and use of Internet services in these universities.

This white paper provides background about the convergence of disparate undergraduate education movements in higher education that affect GWLA individual institutions, particularly those initiatives related to the reinvention of undergraduate education in research universities. It provides suggestions for how individual GWLA member libraries can take advantage of an unprecedented interested in education reform to assume leadership roles on our campuses, and in doing so, provide greater security for libraries during fiscal uncertainty as they position themselves, their collections, and their services as an integral part of the instructional agenda as well as the research agenda. The collection is the library's most valuable asset and it needs to be protected from security breaches. Collection security is an important issue for academic libraries.This study explores the major collection security issues related to library collections in Malaysian university libraries. The study reveals the measures adopted by the Malaysian libraries to ensure effective collections security governance. The findings indicate that main breaches of collection security are book theft, damage, mutilation, or defacement; books attacked by insects or worms; and non-return of borrowed materials. Demographic Variables And Self-Efficacy As Factors Influencing Career Commitment Of Librarians In Federal University Libraries In Nigeria, Gboyega Adio, S.O. Popoola

This research examines the influence demographic variables and self-efficacy have on career commitment of librarians in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The standardized self-efficacy scale developed by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1993) and revalidated in 2007 with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was used for data collection. The outcome of the research showed that demographic variables and self-efficacy had significant influence on career commitment of librarians working in federal university libraries in Nigeria (F (9; 352) = 11.058, p < 0.05). The study revealed that demographic variables and self-efficacy accounted for 20% (adj R 2 = 0.2000) in variability of career commitment of the respondents.

"Can't Anyone Be A Teacher Anyway?": Student Perceptions Of Academic Librarians As Teachers, Mark Aaron Polger, Karen Okamoto

The study explores student perceptions of the academic librarian as teachers. A questionnaire was distributed to 500 students at two City University of New York colleges. Convenience and snowball sampling were employed to reach as many respondents as possible. Questionnaires were administered following a library instruction class and in the campus cafeteria. Contrary to results from previous studies, many respondents consider librarians to be teachers.

Exploiting Computer Facilities For Internal Income Generation: A Comparison Of Two Nigerian Libraries, Fredrick Olatunji Ajegbomogun

The study focused on the exploitation of computer facilities for internal income generation in Nigerian academic libraries. It is a comparative study of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan. Questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain data from the head of libraries and librarians who were directly involved in the section where internal income are generated.The performances of the two libraries in this regard are compared and recommendations were made on how to generate money internally through various services, since library is persistently facing economic problems in carrying out their services
