In a time of shrinking endowments and reduced budgets can libraries really hope to make an impact on a global problem like climate change? In this presentation Illinois Wesleyan University librarians Meg Miner and Chris Sweet will argue that not only can libraries play a significant role in furthering campus sustainability but that dwindling budgets can actually be a catalyst for positive environmental changes. Miner and Sweet are both members of the Illinois Wesleyan GREENetwork and will draw upon their personal experiences in campus environmental efforts for this presentation; they will offer practical ideas for implementing “green” library initiatives that …

Metadata is essential for organizing, searching, and managing information resources, particularly as libraries expand their efforts in making their collections available on the web. Libraries are populating institutional repositories with a myriad of resources, including digitized special collections materials, finding aids, electronic theses, peer-reviewed faculty work and other research, scholarship and creative outputs. But what are libraries doing about the descriptive metadata that allows users to search, find, and select these resources in their repositories? Embedded Information Literacy: An Arts & Humanities Model, Marni Harrington, Christy Sich

Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)

With the installation of a new Arts & Humanities Dean and recognizing the need to address the information literacy skills of undergraduates, the faculty and library teamed-up to integrate course design. We piloted an embedded information literacy program for a 3rd year course in the Department of Classical Studies. The implementation was successful due to collaboration with the faculty, department and course instructor as well as the continual assessment, adaptation and evaluation of the course content. Due to the organic nature of this model, it may be adapted to other programs in Arts & Humanities.

Insurance Coverage In Nigerian Academic Libraries, E. Ademola Adekanye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study examines insurance coverage of library materials in Nigerian universities. The size of the collection, disasters experienced in the library, safety measures, and contingency plans were examined. The study found that more than 80 percent of the libraries used for the study had no insurance coverage. A larger percentage of the respondents did not have a written security policy. The study recommends comprehensive insurance coverage for university libraries.

Despite the efforts to check the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, deaths and new infections are recorded daily. The government has formed the National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), the State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA), and the Local Action Committee on AIDS (LACA), to create awareness through rural extension services. This paper examines the extent to which these services are provided in Olofinmuyin market, Sango Ota. Questionnaires and interview questions were used for data collection. The Iya-loja (market mother) was interviewed. The results show that the women get much of their information at home during weekends, from hospital, and …

Creating An Institutional Repository For State Government Digital Publications, Mei Kiu Lo, Leah M. Thomas

In 2008, the Library of Virginia (LVA) selected the digital asset management system DigiTool to host a centralized collection of digital state government publications. The Virginia state digital repository targets three primary user groups: state agencies, depository libraries and the general public. DigiTool’s ability to create depositor profiles for individual agencies to submit their publications, its integration with the Aleph ILS, and product support by ExLibris were primary factors in its selection. As a smaller institution, however, LVA lacked the internal resources to take full advantage of DigiTool’s full set of features. The process of cataloging a heterogenous collection of …

This study explores the history of curriculum revision in the department of LIS University of the Punjab (PU) Lahore. It focuses on the perceptions of PU alumni about the MLIS curricula. t investigates their satisfaction with curriculum, learning, faculty, instructional methods, instructional facilities, etc., through a questionnaire survey. The sample of 40 professionals who were graduates of three academic years (from 2005-2007) was selected. The findings reveal that 78 percent were up to 50 perrcent satisfied with the LIS curricula. This paper briefly explores the relationship of factors in tje provision of Networked Services (NS) at National Institute of Technology (NIT) libraries in India. The factors such as Library Automation (LA), Network Infrastructure (NI), Computer Infrastructure (CI), Electronic Resources (ER), and Manpower (MA) are compared to Networked Services (NS) offered by the NIT libraries. A questionnaire was the data collection instrument. The sample size was twenty, due to the limited in number of NITs in India. A paired t-test was used to analyze the data. This study explores whether the student work study programme of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria programme has lived up to the purpose of its establishment. Existing circulation statistical records and interview were used to elicit information. The results of the appraisal reveal that there are challenges and prospects; and that the programme has complemented staff shortages, assisted indigent students, and contributed to academic excellence of the participating students. It is therefore recommended that more funds should be allocated to the programme and more students should be employed.

Access, Use, And Attitudes Of Academics Toward Electronic Journals: A Case Study Of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, B.O. Omotayo

The paper surveys the use of electronic journals by academics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. It considers the attitude, purpose, frequency of use, and problems encountered. The data represent responses from two hundred and forty-five academic staff. The results reveal a high percentage of use for literature search and professional development. Use is affected by problems associated with basic infrastructures prevalent in the developing countries. The academics see a bright future for electronic journals without predicting the extinction of print journals.The paper suggests that the university administration provide better basic infrastructures to encourage the use of electronic journals, …

The Effect Of Social Factors On Students' Academic Performance In Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, S.S. Umar, I.O. Shaib, D.N. Aituisi, N.A. Yakubu, O. Bada

Students' academic performance is influenced by social factors. These factors include romantic relationships, student cults, membership in clubs and organizations, and sports. Sampling via mid-point square approach was used to compare social variables with the students' CGPA. Both the f-test at 0.05 level of significance and regression indicate that romantic relationships and student cults have a significant effect on academic performance, while club or organization activity and excessive sporting is not significant.

Provision And Use Of Legal Information Among Civil Rights Groups In The Oil Producing Communities Of Nigeria, Margeret U. Ugboma

The study investigates the provision and use of legal information among civil rights groups in oil producing communities of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed for this study. Data was gathered by questionnaire from 127 active civil rights group members spread across ten oil producing communities in three major oil producing states of Nigeria – Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. The data obtained were analyzed using simple percentages. Findings revealed that majority of the civil rights groups members are youths with low educational background. Findings further revealed that lack of funds, lack of legal knowledge, hoarding of information, and inability …

Universities in Nigeria operate with people performing certain specialised complementary roles to make the system work. Workers e belong to one of several workers' associations (trade unions). Despite the apparently congenial industrial relations within the two university systems, dissatisfaction and disharmony have often emerged and developed from unsatisfied demands or unchecked exhibitions of managerial prerogative amongst the three existing unions, resulting in conflict and eventually leading to the disruption of academic activities. The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

What works well and what presents a challenge in managing an academic library Web site? We decided to ask Web managers and public services librarians at 149 colleges and universities in order to gain their perspectives. Key issues and challenges that emerged as a result of our online survey included the importance of administrative support, staffing, content management systems, distributed versus centralized work environments, decision-making, collaboration across work cultures, and user involvement.

This paper describes the process of developing and implementing a comprehensive, school-wide, and sustainable information literacy program at a commercial art and design school. The program requires that information literacy student learning outcomes be included in specific General Education and art and design courses across the curriculum. The results of this multi-year effort indicate that while the program is sound, teaching information literacy is an on-going effort requiring much more training of faculty and students. Best practices in information literacy in library science and art and design literature are reviewed

The construction and validity of an assessment tool mapped to objectives in a high enrollment credit-bearing information literacy course delivered primarily online is the focus of this article. An open book and non-proctored objective test can be a reliable measure for assessing student competencies in basic information literacy skills, both at the course level and for reporting to national accrediting bodies and state agencies. An analysis of overall student performance on test items that are mapped to information literacy outcomes helps to identify competencies that need improvement in a course, as well as provide a baseline for informing the process …
