Exposing Ourselves: A Case Study In Collection Management Software Implementation, Suellyn Lathrop, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel, Nancy Richey

The Southeastern Librarian

In the 21st century, libraries are well aware of the problem of hidden collections and so must seek by computer technology to make these “virtually” hidden collections available to our clients in a single, easy-to-use database. The Kentucky Library & Museum (KYLM), which opened in 1939, houses the special collections department of Western Kentucky University Libraries, and holds materials collected from 1919 to the present. Special collection libraries and archives such as the KYLM are known for their diversity of materials including manuscripts, ephemera, institutional records, maps, images, objects, audio and video recordings. These collections are of great research value …

Job Seeking In An Academic Environment: A Dual Perspective, Claudene Sproles, Robert Detmering Apr 2010

Job Seeking In An Academic Environment: A Dual Perspective, Claudene Sproles, Robert Detmering

The Southeastern Librarian

Libraries, unfortunately, are not immune to the current economic climate, which translates not only into budget cuts, but also into fewer vacant positions being posted and filled. Library school graduates entering the profession not only are forced to compete for fewer jobs, but face stiff competition from other applicants with previous professional experience. In the current economy, many applicants in various stages of their careers are competing for the few entry-level positions available. Furthermore, applicants seeking tenure-track positions in college and university libraries often confront challenges that are unique to the academic environment.

In this essay, the Chair of the …

Sports Holdings In The Southeastern Conference University Libraries: Football As A Case Study, William F. Meehan Iii, Margaret A. Swanson, Catherine O. Yates, Emily N. Decker Apr 2010

Sports Holdings In The Southeastern Conference University Libraries: Football As A Case Study, William F. Meehan Iii, Margaret A. Swanson, Catherine O. Yates, Emily N. Decker

The Southeastern Librarian

Of the twelve National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has attained prominence. But how do the SEC’s university libraries fare when evaluated for their football holdings? While university libraries develop their collections mainly to support research and teaching functions, according to accepted collection development practice, the extent to which sports of local importance are represented in their collections is a subject given little attention in the professional literature.

In order to help close the gap, this study evaluates the football holdings of the 12 SEC university library systems using the checklist …

From The Classroom To The Concourse: Studying The Grand Concourse To Discover One's Community, Elyse Zucker, William A. Casari

Touchstone

Walt Whitman’s poem, “I Hear America Singing” inspired the 13 murals painted on the walls of the Grand Concourse U.S. post office located across the street from Hostos Community College. Visited last fall by Professor Zucker’s Reading class (English 92) these looming murals helped students more fully appreciate how art enhances the Grand Concourse and, by extension, education illuminates everyday life. The 1860 poem itself celebrates America and its diversity, which 150 year later, still holds relevance for students.

Library Lights Out: Ewu's Living Learning Communities Sleep Over At Jfk Library, Julie Miller

Scholarship and Professional Work

Last February I received an unusual phone call. "What would you think about a group of students spending the night at the library?" asked Dr. Jeff Stafford, associate dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Eastern Washington University. "Tell me more," I replied. Shortly thereafter, I received a written proposal from Patricia Wahler, the community advisor (CA) for a student living learning community (LLC) at Morrison Hall at Eastern Washington University. Library Lights Out was Wahler's idea. "The Living Learning Communities of Morrison Hall would like an opportunity to utilize the Eastern Washington University library for a …

Reference Desk Consultation Assignment: An Exploratory Study Of Students' Perceptions Of Reference Service, Pamela N. Martin, Lezlie Park

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper describes the experience of three sophomore English composition classes that were required to visit the reference desk for class credit. Student perceptions of reference consultations are analyzed to gain a clearer understanding of the students’ attitudes towards reference services. Findings of this exploratory study indicate that students still suffer from library anxiety and are much more likely to seek out reference help if they are convinced that a consultation will save them time.

Librarian As Professor: A Dynamic New Role Model, Martha Fallahay Loesch Apr 2010

Librarian As Professor: A Dynamic New Role Model, Martha Fallahay Loesch

Library Publications

The 20th century information explosion provided widespread technological innovation and ease of access to information, and due to the 21st century emphasis on digital collections and electronic resources, libraries around the world are facing an uncertain future. This naturally causes librarians to re-evaluate their professional role, but perhaps academic librarians are best prepared for the future due to their co-existing role as professors. Essentially they have always been teaching, but now they must conquer the disparaging image and status treatment to which they have been subjected and evolve their profession by joining their teaching faculty colleagues in classrooms on college …

After succeeding in a series of secretarial jobs at various places, she worked her way up to becoming a well-regarded advertising manager with First Federal Savings and Loan Association of St. Petersburg. Valuing Information Literacy: Affective Learning And The Acrl Standards, Robert Schroeder, Ellysa Stern Cahoy Apr 2010

Valuing Information Literacy: Affective Learning And The Acrl Standards, Robert Schroeder, Ellysa Stern Cahoy

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Higher education information literacy standards have readily addressed cognitive skills, although affective competencies--the emotional abilities that students must acquire in order to successfully navigate the research process--have not yet been incorporated into standards. This paper presents examples of current information literacy standards, integrating affective competencies or dispositions, including the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) "21st Century Learning Standards," and proposes a model for affective-focused higher education information literacy standards. The role of affect in library learning, the importance of affective competencies, and the centrality of affective learning to student mastery of research skills are discussed. Viewing information literacy as …

Working Overseas In A School Or University Library, Joan Petit Apr 2010

Working Overseas In A School Or University Library, Joan Petit

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

For two years, my family and I lived in Cairo, Egypt, while I worked at the American University in Cairo as an Instruction and Reference Librarian. It was a fantastic experience, and I get questions almost weekly from students and librarians interested in the same kind of job, either in Egypt or elsewhere.

This article will discuss jobs in academic and school libraries, including tips on finding and attaining these positions. This article focuses on jobs for expats (or potential expats) rather than jobs where an American is hired instead of a local.

Upstairs-Downstairs: Working With A Campus Assessment Coordinator And Other Allies For Effective Information Literacy Assessment, Amy R. Hofer, Margot Hanson

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

At a 2008 assessment conference, Megan Oakleaf and Lisa Hinchliffe noted that one barrier librarians face when trying to conduct assessment is lack of coordination. This barrier was removed for Golden Gate University's (GGU) librarians when Lisa Kramer was hired as Director of Assessment and Evaluation and made her expertise and support available to us. She helped us understand the difference between program evaluation and learning assessment, and acted as a sounding board in the design of a new assessment study. We describe our environment at GGU, our assessment goals, and our study design, then discuss preliminary results and possible …
