Staff Users And Overdue Fines In Nigerian Polytechnic Libraries, Nelson Edewor Apr 2010

Staff Users And Overdue Fines In Nigerian Polytechnic Libraries, Nelson Edewor

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigates the attitudes of staff users toward the payment of overdue fines in Nigerian Polytechnic libraries. A survey was applied to staff users of the libraries of the Delta State Polytechnic Oghara-Otefe, and Delta State Polytechnic. A total of 87 staff participated in the study. A questionnaire and oral interview were used in data collection. Findings reveal that staff users rarely pay overdue fines and would like the system discontinued. The study affirmed the fact that fines are a means of generating funds for the library and a measure to compel users to return books on time. The …

The Anchor, Volume 123.19: April 7, 2010, Hope College

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This paper was prepared as background for a talk given at AGU 2009 on “Data & Libraries.” It summarizes the developments and events from late 2006 through early 2010 that are shaping library roles in scientific data curation while underscoring the range, complexity, and varying granularity of systems, actions, and efforts involved. The main conclusions are: (1) leaders of major research libraries have committed their institutions to support data curation. (2) The library profession has demonstrated significant conceptual progress in characterizing and understanding data curation both in theory and in practice. Wikipedia And The Making Of A (Wo)Man: Biographical Construction In The Digital Age, Christopher Sweet Apr 2010

Wikipedia And The Making Of A (Wo)Man: Biographical Construction In The Digital Age, Christopher Sweet

Scholarly Publications

Did you know that according to their Wikipedia biography entries, Senators Edward Kennedy and Robert Byrd both died on January, 20, 2009? In reality, neither Senator died on that date. Robert Byrd is still very much alive and Edward Kennedy lived through August of last year. In a few short years, Wikipedia has come to dominate the field of easy-to-access information on just about any topic. Due to prominent placing in search engine results, the first stop for biographical information is often Wikipedia. Since Wikipedia entries are user-generated, errors and blatant smear campaigns are commonplace. Political hopefuls now carefully craft …

Who Moved My Intranet? The Human Side Of Introducing Collaborative Technologies To Library Staff, Keven Jeffery, Ellie Dworak Apr 2010

Who Moved My Intranet? The Human Side Of Introducing Collaborative Technologies To Library Staff, Keven Jeffery, Ellie Dworak

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the Fall of 2007, the San Diego State University (SDSU) Library changed from an HTML intranet to a Wiki intranet (Dworak & Jeffery, 2009) using the MediaWiki software. This change was carried out by a group of three people (two librarians and an IT staff person who was the intranet webmaster). In doing so, the group shifted the responsibility for content development and maintenance from a single webmaster (with several backups) to all library employees. This change was made in the hopes that this would lead to a more dynamic, relevant, and current intranet. In order for such a …

Reference By Any Other Name, Ellie Dworak Apr 2010

Reference By Any Other Name, Ellie Dworak

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Librarians have been doing long-distance reference work for a very long time. Libraries have used telephones since sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s and email since before I began my career in 1996. Even chat reference can hardly be called an "emerging reference service"--I first remember hearing about it at a Southern California Online Users Group conference a decade ago. Though reference via machines is not new, we seem to be at a pivotal time. There are currently so many possibilities for reaching out to our patrons that it can be hard to make sense of which options …

What Are Mobile Friendly Library Sites Offering? A Survey, Chee Hsien Aaron (Zheng Zhixian) Tay

Research Collection Library

Everyone knows mobile is hot now, and many libraries are scrambling to add mobile friendly pages. Currently themost complete listing of libraries with mobile sites can be found at the Library Success Wiki site , which lists over40 such sites.I thought it would be helpful to look at these 40+ sites to see what are the common services that have beingoffered to mobile users. To that end, I have created a google doc of the 40 sites comparing their common features.I grouped each feature below according to whether it exists in a mobile site and then choose representativeexamples with images …

A Longitudinal Study Of Language And Ideology In Congress, Bei Yu, Daniel Diermeier Apr 2010

A Longitudinal Study Of Language And Ideology In Congress, Bei Yu, Daniel Diermeier

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This paper presents an analysis of the legislative speech records from the 101st-108th U.S. Congresses using machine learning and natural language processing methods. We use word vectors to represent the speeches in both the Senate and the House, and then use text categorization methods to classify the speakers by their ideological positions. The classification accuracy indicates the level of distinction between the liberal and the conservative ideologies. Our experiment results demonstrate an increasing partisanship in the Congress between 1989 and 2006. Ideology classifiers trained on the House speeches can predict the Senators' ideological positions well (House-to-Senate prediction), however the Senate-to-House …
