For most Americans, "The Great Plains" evokes images of grasslands, dust storms, prairie fires, Indians on horseback, cowboys and wheat lands, and perhaps flat valleys crossed by braided rivers carrying a heavy load of sand and gravel, extremes of weather, and a climate typified by an alternation of droughts and wetter periods. Geologists picture such general images, too, but they also see radical changes in the landscape over periods expressed in millions rather than hundreds of years. The characteristic patterns of climate and natural vegetation in central North America are strongly interrelated and result from an atmospheric circulation system that responds to both global and continental scale mechanisms. Climatic patterns arise in the region between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Lakes or Mississippi River from the interactions between two major components of the global atmospheric circulation system, the tropical Hadley Cell and the extratropical, upper-level Westerlies. The Westerlies, particularly, are influenced and steered by thermal inequalities over the earth's surface as well as by terrain barriers such as the Rocky Mountain Cordillera. She and a colleague met me, and after dropping off my bags, they asked if I wanted to go for a ride to see a special place. It was a beautiful spring afternoon and I was glad for the fresh air. I remember seeing two sights I will never forget: one was living Texas longhorns in the brush, and the other was the beauty of the descent and drive through Palo Duro Canyon.

As the title of this modest volume suggests, Edd H. Bailey, the late president of the Union Pacific Company, has written for us his life story. Like typical railroad officials of the past, Bailey climbed the corporate ladder by moving through various positions in the operating department. After a youth spent on a woebegone homestead in eastern Colorado, he joined the Union Pacific in 1922 as a helper in the car department in Cheyenne, Wyoming; by 1965, he was the president and director. Although Bailey lacked a college education, his various "hands-on" experiences made possible his rise to industry-wide prominence. …

Wyoming is typical of the states in the upper Great Plains region (Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota) in many but not all aspects. In socioeconomic terms, the Great Plains are basically agricultural and rural with fewer prominent urban centers than elsewhere in the nation. Politically the region is generally viewed as conservative and Republican, but this image is subject to several important caveats. Plains Folk essentially completes its 1983 predecessor, Prairie Mosaic, authored by sociologist William Sherman. The earlier work outlined the landscape of ethnic groups that composed North Dakota, the state with the highest proportion of foreign-born residents prior to the Second World War. For the sequel, Sherman teamed up with a handful of ethnic historians to give extended treatment to the same folks: "Yankees," Germans from Germany and eastern Europe, Scandinavians, Slavs, and those with a more limited presence.

Waterfowl young often travel long distances from the nest site to water when accompanied by a parent; the timing of the trip can range from a few hours to days after hatching (Sowls 1955, Bjlrvall 1968; Dzubin and Gollop 1972; Ball 1973; Duncan 1983; Afton and Paulus, in press). Little is known, however, of what happens to waterfowl broods or individual young stranded far from water by the death of a parent or after becoming separated or abandoned.

In the spring of 1908, Morris Zemsky, a Russian- Jewish immigrant homesteading in Ashley, North Dakota, sent a letter to the Industrial Removal Office (IRO) of the Baron de Hirsch Fund in New York. Joseph Kaminer, Secretary of the Ashley Farmer's Bureau, wrote the note for Zemsky, who spoke only Yiddish. The letter requested advice on the condition of Zemsky's parents "who are now in New York and are actually starving to death. This slender but far ranging volume presents the modem Hasinai Caddo view of their origin and traditional lifeways. It is based primarily on oral traditions and secondarily on published and archival material. The information culled from these sources is woven into a framework of twelve chapters, each of which is introduced by a description of a dance. All but one of the dances make up a night's cycle of ceremonial song and dance that reenact the tribal history.
