The main title of this book might suggest to the reader that it is a work of broad scope on the subhumid to semiarid part of the Canadian prairies often called the Palliser Triangle. The second subtitle, A Festschrift Honoring Dr. Archibald MacSween Stalker, is closer to what the book really does. Indeed, not all of the chapters are about the Palliser Triangle.

Stalker is a celebrated glacial geologist/glacial geomorphologist who has made significant contributions to the understanding of the landforms of central and southern Alberta. Like myself, those who have an interest in this topic, or for that matter …

The weather of 1849 in the central Great Plains and western interior of the United States has been reconstructed in numerous analyses of diaries from the mass migration to the California goldfields, military post records, and other archival materials. These studies have demonstrated that the spring and summer periods of 1849 were unusually cold and wet, particularly in the eastern region of the Oregon Trail (near Kansas City). Historical sources from the valley of the Red River of the North of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Manitoba support this contention and extend the climatic reconstruction 1,000 km northward. The Rainbasin area of south-central Nebraska is an important component of the central flyway of migratory waterfowl. Little is known or has been reported about the morphology of large basins in the Rainbasin. A subsurface investigation was conducted to determine the morphology of two basins in Clay County, Nebraska. Transects were located across two sample areas, and seventeen test holes were drilled to determine loess thickness and stratigraphy. Radiocarbon dates were obtained from buried paleosols. The modern basin landscape was determined to be a direct result of 2.5 to 8 m of loess deposition on an older basin landscape. The …

The late Sarah Whitecalf was born on the Moosomin Reserve in Western Saskatchewan in 1919 and grew up there and on the nearby Sweet Grass Reserve. Raised by her mother and grandparents, she was never sent to school and remained a monolingual speaker of Plains Cree throughout her life. Her last twenty years were spent at Saskatoon, where she became a valued informant for scholars and educators attempting to study or revive Cree traditions.

Chicsa's People, or the Chickasaw, for centuries farmed and hunted in their traditional homeland that encompassed portions of present-day Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. The harvest of animal furs and skins encouraged British traders early in the eighteenth century to court favor among the Chickasaw to the exclusion of the Spanish and the French. Once established, tribal allegiance to the British continued until, at the close of the American revolution, the Chickasaw finally and reluctantly allied themselves to the United States. What happened at Wounded Knee Creek on 29 December 1890, was not a battle but a massacre by soldiers of the families comprising Big Foot's band of Minneconjou Lakotas. Surrounded, desperately outnumbered and outgunned, provoked into a hopeless firefight, they ran and were slaughtered to the tiniest infant by mounted soldiers who hunted them for "several hours" (p. 19) and some three miles. About three hundred Lakotas were killed. Because Bigfoot's men had engaged the soldiers, the atrocity has been masked as a battle. Indeed, twenty-eight soldiers received medals of honor for participating in the massacre and associated activities.

The book, another as-told-to life history on Lakota women as in Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog and Richard Erdoes and Cante ohitika Win (Bravehearted Women) by Carolyn Reyer, centers upon life on Cheyenne River reservation and presents another facet of feminine experiences. Collections of this genre-though often getting rave reviews in publications of the dominant society-evoke certain cautionary appraisals from persons in their natal communities. Perhaps many collectors of biography/ autobiography forget that the so-called target populations from which their subjects stem are literate.

The literature of Willa Cather has long been praised for its rich and evocative description of place. Her raw material was drawn primarily from personal experiences in late nineteenth- century Webster County, Nebraska, during the period of initial settlement, and renewed by frequent visits home the first decades of this century. The Pavelka farmstead was one of the important places in her life; it was used as the setting for Book V of My Antonia and for "Neighbour Rosicky," a later short story.¹
