Internal Borders And Migration In India, Zovanga L. Kone, Maggie Y. Liu, Aaditya Mattoo, Caglar Ozden, Siddharth Sharma
Economics: Faculty Publications
Internal mobility is a critical component of economic growth and development, as it enables the reallocation of labor to more productive opportunities across sectors and regions. Using detailed district-to-district migration data from the 2001 Census of India, the article highlights the role of state borders as significant impediments to internal mobility. The analysis finds that average migration between neighboring districts in the same state is at least 50% larger than neighboring districts on different sides of a state border, even after accounting for linguistic differences. Although the impact of state borders differs by education, age and reason for migration, it …
Household Debt, Expected Economic Conditions, And Income Inequality, Edmond Berisha, John Meszaros
Household Debt, Expected Economic Conditions, And Income Inequality, Edmond Berisha, John Meszaros
Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The high level of debt among households outside the top end of the income distribution has led many economists to assert that household debt has been an important component of the increase in income inequality in the United States. In addition, the yield spread provides information about the overall condition of the economy and may also be tied into the distribution of income. The paper's results show that increases in the yield spread and household debt correspond with increases in top income shares, resulting in increases in income inequality. However, as household debt and income inequality increase, the yield spread …

Microfinance, Msmes And The Macro Economy: Evidence From India, Monica Casabona
Microfinance, Msmes And The Macro Economy: Evidence From India, Monica Casabona
Honors College Theses
Much of prior literature on the relationship between microfinance and the macro-economy has focused on the effect of the latter in determining the success of microfinance institutions (MFIs). However, the microfinance industry has been underserved in studies evaluating microfinance as a legitimate contributor toward macro-economic growth. Researching this connection would provide a clearer direction for policymakers to support microfinance, and the institutions that foster such activities. This paper investigates the hypothesis that microfinance is not only important to the people at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid, but for the overall health of a national economy. We explore different mechanisms …

Analisis Hubungan Antara Infrastruktur Jalan Dan Tax Capacity: Studi Kasus Indonesia, Dian Andriany, Riatu M. Qibthiyyah
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The study explore the relationship between road and spending infrastructure with tax capacity in Indonesia. Using stochastic frontier analysis method and tax revenue data of 34 provinces in 2011–2016, this study confirms positive relationship between infrastructure spending and central and local tax capacity, while the availability of road infrastructure has positive significant impact only on local tax capacity. The level of income and education indicates a positive significantly eect both on central and local tax capacity. However, the greater the dominance of the agricultural sector in the economy tends to reduce central tax capacity. Similarly, tax administration factors affect central …

This study analyses the effect of foreign tourist expenditure, government expenditure and foreign investment on wage inequality between skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour in the Indonesian tourism sector. The study uses time series data with a period of 22 years. The method used is Error Correction Model (ECM). The results of this study indicate that foreign tourist expenditure and government expenditure increase inequality in the short term, but in the long run can reduce wage inequality. Meanwhile, foreign investment increases inequality both in the short and long term.

Dampak Upah Minimum Terhadap Probabilitas Keluar Dari Sektor Formal, Clara Tridiana, Diah Widyawati
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The effectiveness of minimum wages is still debated, even though minimum wage regulation increases worker’s wages, yet it causes “disemployment effect”. This study aims to identify differences in minimum wages impact on probabilities out of formal sector for unskilled and skilled workers. The type of skill used is based on job classification. Using Sakernas data in August 2010 and 2015, probit regression was conducted to estimate minimum wages impact on probabilities out of formal sector on skilled and unskilled workers. Based on analysis, minimum wage on probability of exit from formal sector is higher for unskilled workers than skilled workers.
Examining Moral Hazard In The Healthcare Insurance Market, Samuel Ashby
Examining Moral Hazard In The Healthcare Insurance Market, Samuel Ashby
Honors College Theses
This study aims to examine the effect of insurance coverage on medical expenditure in the United States. The data was gathered from the Household Component Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and is a cross-sectional data set with a sample size of approximately 1500 observations. The study also distinguishes between public and private insurance coverage to compare the potential moral hazard in the two separate markets. The results of this study suggest that insurance status, specifically public, has a strong positive effect on healthcare expenditure. This result, combined with a negative relationship between household income and healthcare expenditure, suggests that the source …

Development Of A Composite Lean Index To Measure Lean Implementation In Philippine Manufacturing Companies, Willy F. Zalatar, Anna Bella D. Siriban-Manalang
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Lean manufacturing has been gaining worldwide popularity as a means of reducing waste, improving quality, and increasing the competitiveness of manufacturing firms. This paper aims to develop a composite lean index (CLI) which can be used to measure the degree of lean adoption in Philippine manufacturing companies. The lean index employs actual quantitative data, rather than subjective assessment, which is more prevalent in the literature. Fifteen performance indicators divided into process and equipment, manufacturing planning and control, human resources, and supplier and customer relationships are proposed and then validated using empirical data. Results showed that a CLI, which yields a …

The Impact Of Remittances On Education Attainment: Evidence From Dominican Republic, Tahiya Begum
Honors College Theses
This paper will examine the relationship between remittances and education attainment focusing on Dominican Republic in 2002. This study will focus on households in Dominican Republic using surveys from IPUMS international and the data is cross-sectional. Sending remittances increases the income for households, which in return, influences the spending on education. The study of remittances is analyzed in a more cultural and social value rather than entirely economic. The dynamic and structure of a family is crucial when studying the effects of remittances in a developing country. Key findings from this analysis is that the relationship between education attainment and …
The Economic Impact Of Failing Infrastructure In The New York Metropolitan Area, Nicholas Travis
The Economic Impact Of Failing Infrastructure In The New York Metropolitan Area, Nicholas Travis
Honors College Theses
Infrastructure in the New York Metropolitan Area has been seriously underfunded due to a failure of public investment on the local, state and federal level. Prior research has presented concrete reasoning that the now crumbling infrastructure will seriously affect economic growth and worker productivity. This research seeks to quantify the economic effects as a result of this failing infrastructure. My research asks: what are the concrete, additional economic expenditures, due to failing infrastructure, that drivers spend each year? How much do these economic costs decrease our economic productivity, and how do the economic costs compare with proposed infrastructure improvements? From …
Institutional Development And Foreign Banks In Chile, Brian Du, Alejandro Serrano, Andre Vianna
Institutional Development And Foreign Banks In Chile, Brian Du, Alejandro Serrano, Andre Vianna
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes the effects of foreign banks on developing countries’ bank performance. We study this relationship from a different perspective by focusing on Chile, an emerging market with strong institutions. The results from dynamic panel regressions on hand-collected financial statement data from 2005 to 2014 indicate that foreign banks improve banking sector competitiveness, reduce the volatility of returns, and increase commercial and consumption loans. The overall evidence suggests that, in the presence of solid institutions, foreign banks improve the banking sector in developing countries. Therefore, public policies on foreign banks should be more effective when accompanied by advances in …
Understanding Relationships Between Early Life Toxic Stress, Childhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage, And Allostatic Load In Adolescence, Amanda King
Dissertations (1934 -)
Chronic disease prevalence among children and adolescents is rising, which is thought to result in part from elevations in allostatic load (AL). AL is the cumulative physiological dysregulation that results from exposure to biological, social and environmental stressors over time. Socioeconomic disparities in chronic disease and AL have been well-documented in adult populations, including links between childhood socioeconomic disadvantage (CSD) and AL, yet little is known as to whether CSD may begin to impact AL earlier in life. Differential exposure and vulnerability to stress among racial/ethnic minorities may increase risk for elevated AL among those experiencing CSD. Framed by the …

There are many analogies among fortune hunting in business, politics, and science. The prime task of the gold digger was to go to the Klondikes, find the right mine and mine the richest veins. This task requires motivation, sense of purpose and ability. Techniques and equipment must be developed. Fortune hunting in New England was provided at one time by hunting for whales. One went to a great whalers’ station such as New Bedford and joined the whale hunters. The hunt in academic research is similar. A single-minded passion is called for. These notes here are the wrap-up comments containing …

This study analyzes the effect of Japan’s foreign direct investment on Indonesia’s intra-industry trade (IIT) with Japan from 1990-2017. IIT is decomposed into 3 types, horizontal IIT (HIIT), upper vertical IIT (UVIIT), and lower vertical IIT (LVIIT) which indicates quality. The estimation result show that Japanese direct investment have a significant role in enhancing bilateral IIT. Analysis on each type of IIT reveals that Japanese direct investment have positive significant impact on HIIT and LVIIT, but there is no evidence on its impact to UVIIT.

This thesis consists of three chapters. In Chapter1, I show that returns to currency carry and momentum strategies are compensations for the risk of US monetary policy uncertainty (MPU), with risk exposures explaining 96% of their cross-sectional return variations. The findings are consistent with an intermediary-based exchange rate model. Higher MPU triggers position unwinding by the intermediary, which decreases there turns of currency with high-interest rate or appreciation, while that with low-interest rate or depreciation earns positive returns. Different responses stem from the long and short behavior of the intermediary. The explanatory power of US MPU risk is robust and …

Stability And Resilience Of Equity Markets Amidst The 2008 Global Financial Crisis: Islamic Versus Conventional Markets, M. Shabri Abd. Majid
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The objective of this study is to empirically explore the impacts of the 2008 global financial crisis on both Islamic and conventional equity markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, the UK, and the US. Daily closing indices, spanning from July 2007 to July 2011, were utilized and analyzed using cointegration technique and impulse response functions. The study found that the conventional equity markets performed marginally poorer than their Islamic counterparts during the 2008 global financial crisis. This finding implied that the Islamic equity markets were more stable and resilient than the conventional equity markets amidst the crisis period.

The purpose of this study is to mediate the influence of market sensing capabilities on the marketing performance by proposing acculturative products uniqueness that mediate the gap between market sensing capabilities and improvement of marketing performance. The sample data from 160 small and medium enterprises of batik, ceramics, and interior design in Indonesia were used to test the model consisting of four hypotheses. The statistical tests in our model used four variables: market sensing capabilities, product innovation, acculturative products uniqueness, and marketing performance. The results of the data show that acculturative products uniqueness has an important role in improving marketing …

The Effect Of Global Financial Crisis On Asean Growth: Evidence From Stock Market Analysis, Siti Muliana Samsi, Zarinah Yusof, Kee-Cheok Cheong
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study empirically examines the effects of the global financial crisis on economic growth through a model that considers various sectoral indices, with particular reference to the stock market, bank, and real estate. Using analysis of cointegration, parsimonious error correction model (PECM), impulse response function (IRF) and variance decomposition analysis (VDC), the study found that the effect of the global financial crisis on growth differs among ASEAN-5 countries. The PECM analysis reveals that the crisis has the real effect on the stock market and bank equations. Three out of five ASEAN countries show that the global financial crisis has a …

On The Existence Of Calendar Anomalies And Persistence In The Daily Returns Of The Psei, Kristine Joy E. Carpio
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The future of the stock market may never be predicted consistently, nor its past behavior understood entirely, but any knowledge gained from observing it could help decide on a sound investment strategy. In this study, I looked at the daily returns of the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) from March 1, 1990, to January 31, 2017, and see how the data relates to the mathematically verifiable aspects of the noise theory and efficient market theory (EMT). In relation to the noise theory, I looked at the occurrences of anomalies. For the EMT, I made use of discrete-time Markov chains to …

Dynamics Of Social Capital Among Fair Trade And Non-Fair Trade Coffee Farmers, Reynaldo A. Bautista Jr.
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Fair trade (FT), a movement that aims to set fair prices for products, alleviate poverty, and assist producers marginalized by the traditional economic model, lends itself to investigation through social capital (SC) lens as SC sits within the network theory area of management literature. The primary contribution of this paper is the analysis of whether FT impacts the dynamics of the different SC dimensions. This study used both quantitative and qualitative techniques. I surveyed 97 farmers from Atok (fair trade supplier) and 96 farmers from Tublay (non-fair trade supplier). Also, I conducted focus group discussions of 8 to 10 members …

Diffusion Of Hong Kong Office Property Prices Across Quality Classes: Ripple Down Or Ripple Up?, Ming-Long Lee, Ming-Te Lee, Shew-Huei Kuo
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study explores whether and how office property prices diffuse across quality classes in Hong Kong. The empirical results reveal that the trends in office property prices are stochastic and demonstrate significant price lead-lag relationships among office property classes. The lead-lag patterns are apparent in both the long run and the short run. In addition, shocks from Class C prices have the strongest and longest-lasting impact on office prices in Hong Kong. In addition to providing new evidence on the ripple effect of commercial property prices across quality classes, this is the first study to explore the ripple effect of …

Impact Of Ownership Structure On Capital Structure- Empirical Evidence From Listed Firms In Vietnam, Tran Thi Xuan Anh, Le Quoc Tuan, Bui Ngoc Phuong
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This research examines whether and to what degree does ownership structure affect the capital structure, using a universal sample of Vietnamese listed firms from 2009 to 2015. We consider the ownership structure in two dimensions: ownership concentration and ownership types. Our paper is among the few to deploy Herfindahl index of all major shareholders, institutional shareholders, and even foreign shareholders as proxies for ownership concentration. The results depict a positive and significant impact of ownership concentration on the overall capital structure of the companies. Further tests indicate that the effect of ownership structure is stronger for short-term debt and bank …

Physician Quality And Payment Schemes: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Renz Adrian T. Calub
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Physicians are expected to provide the best healthcare to their patients; however, it cannot be discounted that their practice is driven primarily by incentives. In this paper, a physician utility maximization model that links physician quality of service to compensation schemes was constructed. Results showed that relative to fixed payment, fee-for-service and mixed payment yield higher quality. Multinomial treatment effects regression of vignette scores on payment schemes also support this hypothesis, indicating that physicians are still below the best level of quality and that incentives to improve are still present.

Income Inequality, Productivity, And International Trade, Wen-Tai Hsu, Lin Lu, Pierre Picard
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper discusses the effect of income inequality on selection and aggregate productivity in a general equilibrium model with non-homothetic preferences. It shows the existence of a negative relationship between the number and quantity of products consumed by an income group and the earnings of other income groups. It also highlights the negative effect of a mean-preserving spread of income on aggregate productivity through the softening of firms’ selection. This effect is however mitigated in the presence of international trade. In a quantitative analysis, it is shown that an excessively large mean-preserving spread of income may harm the rich as …
