This study aims to analyze the effect of household loan participation on microfinance (LKM) on the level of welfare in the form of expenditure for education and health by using IFLS data in 2014. The methods used are Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Instrumental Variable (IV). The results of the analysis show that households that make loans are proven to have higher levels of education spending, especially for households in urban areas. Meanwhile, the existence of household loans did not have a significant effect on health expenditure. The conclusion of this study is that household loans only affect expenditure for …

Theoretically, in the labor market without discrimination, wages should be paid according to productivity. Unlike other studies that use worker level data, this study will identify gender wage discrimination using firm-level data. Using Industrial Survey Data in 1996 and 2006, the gender wage ratio and gender productivity ratio were estimated simultaneously using the nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NLSUR) with least square estimator. We find that there is wage discrimination against women in the manufacturing sector. After disaggregating the firms by trade orientation, we show that wage discrimination against women occurs in non-exporting firms. While in exporting firms there is no …

Currently, animal protein consumption in Indonesia is still low. The consumption of animal protein is one of the keys to improving public health. This study aims to analyze the consumption of animal protein shown by consumption of meat, chicken, fish and milk commodities in households in Indonesia. Fifth Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) data applied by model of Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS). The results found that the own-price elasticity has a negative sign in accordance with the law of demand. Cross-price elasticity values vary from one another. Expenditure elasticity has positive sign indicates that all commodities are normal goods.

Creative industry is a strategic sector of national development. Lack of capital is a major obstacle to its development. This study analyzes financial inclusion of micro small creative industries (MSCI) relating to access and loan use. Both logit and Tobit models were employed for 1,367 MSCI from micro small survey data 2014. This study proved that women entrepreneurs who are less educated, limited asset and located in rural area tend to have greater constraints in financial inclusion. This study recommend the importance of financial education for women entrepreneurs in rural areas and expansion of internet uses and conduct digital finance.

The purpose of the study was to estimate annual resident travel within Montana, the spending volume of resident visitors to counties outside their residence (50 miles or more away from home), and to map the flow of resident travel within Montana. Montana residents took 13,547,000 day trips spending $1,662,620,000 and 4,013,000 overnight trips spending $1,206,970,000 for a total of nearly $2.87 billion on travel in Montana.

Do Hedge Funds Exploit Rare Disaster Concerns?, George P. Gao, Pengjie Gao, Zhaogang Song

We find hedge funds that have higher return covariation with a disaster concern index, which we develop through out-of-the-money puts on various economic sector indices, earn significantly higher returns in the cross-section. We provide evidence that these funds’ managers are more skilled at exploiting the market’s ex ante rare disaster concerns (SEDs), which may not be associated with disaster risk. In particular, high-SED funds, on average, outperform low-SED funds by 0.96% per month, but have less exposure to disaster risk. They continue to deliver superior future performance when SEDs are estimated using the disaster concern index purged of disaster risk …

Real Estate Risk, Corporate Investment And Financing Choice, Xiaoying Deng, Seow Eng Ong, Meijun Qian

This paper empirically examines how real estate risk impacts corporate investment and financing decisions. Using a panel of United States firms from 1985 to 2013, we document that real estate risk is negatively associated with firms’ long-term investments and long-term external financing in equity and debt. The results are robust to different risk measurements and in particular salient during the financial crisis period when the endogeneity between risk and investment is less of a concern. The effect on firm leverage, however, depends on risk measures. Overall, in contrast to previously documented positive effects of the real estate value, real estate …

This paper reviews the research literature in the United States on effects of state and local “economic development incentives.” Such incentives are tax breaks or grants, provided by state or local governments to individual firms, that are intended to affect firms’ decisions about business location, expansion, or job retention. Incentives’ benefits versus costs depend greatly on what percentage of incented firms would not have made a particular location/expansion/retention decision “but for” the incentive. Based on the Girsanov theorem, this paper obtains the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of structural break point in a continuous time model. The exact distribution is asymmetric and tri-modal, indicating that the estimator is biased. These two properties are also found in the finite sample distribution of the least squares (LS) estimator of structural break point in the discrete time model, suggesting the classical long-span asymptotic theory is inadequate. This article studies functional local unit root models (FLURs) in which the autoregressive coefficient may vary with time in the vicinity of unity. We extend conventional local to unity (LUR) models by allowing the localizing coefficient to be a function which characterizes departures from unity that may occur within the sample in both stationary and explosive directions. Such models enhance the flexibility of the LUR framework by including break point, trending, and multidirectional departures from unit autoregressive coefficients. We propose tests for homoskedasticity in spatial econometric models, based on joint or concentrated score functions and an Outer-Product-of-Martingale-Difference (OPMD) estimate of the variance of the joint or concentrated score functions. Versions of these tests robust against non-normality are also given. Asymptotic properties of the proposed tests are formally examined using a cross-section model and a panel model with fixed effects. Monte Carlo results show that the proposed tests based on the concentrated score function have good finite sample properties. Absenteeism of health workers in developing countries is common and can severely undermine the reliability of health system. Therefore, it is important to understand where the prevalence of absenteeism is high. We develop a simple imputation method that combines a Service Delivery Indicators survey and a Service Provision Assessment survey to estimate the prevalence of absenteeism of health workers at the level of regions in Tanzania. The resulting estimates allow one to identify the regions in which the prevalence of absenteeism is significantly higher or lower than the national average and help policymakers determine the priority areas for intervention.

This article investigates the asymptotic properties of quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimators for random-effects panel data transformation models where both the response and (some of) the covariates are subject to transformations for inducing normality, flexible functional form, homoskedasticity, and simple model structure. We develop a QML-type procedure for model estimation and inference. We prove the consistency and asymptotic normality of the QML estimators, and propose a simple bootstrap procedure that leads to a robust estimate of the variance-covariance (VC) matrix. This paper investigates the effects of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the real efficiency of the underlying securities. We document strong evidence that being held by ETFs increases the sensitivity of a firm's investment to its own stock price. This is consistent with the model prediction on the managerial learning channel. Higher ownership by ETFs increases the firm's stock price informativeness about systematic shocks but may decrease the informativeness about firm-specific shocks; however, the firm manager cares most and wants to learn from the stock price mainly about systematic shocks in making investment decisions as he already has precise private information …

Matching frictions and downward wage rigidity emerge as equilibrium phenomena in a twosided labor market where firms sustain variable wage adjustment costs. Firms post wages to attract workers and matches are endogenous. Reducing the wage relative to the wage previously posted is costly to the firm, where the cost is proportional to the size of the proposed cut. Shocks to the firm’s profitability may yield an equilibrium wage above what the firm would offer absent proportional adjustment costs.
