Immediately following the decline of the value of business in the fall of 1929, an attack was made by national advertisers and chain store representatives, rather than the local merchants, to reduce advertising rates in newspapers. With the lengthening of the depression into three years, the tide of advertisers demanding reduction of rates has grown gradually stronger.
