Typical Farm Theory In Agricultural Research, Dillon Feuz, Melvin Skold Oct 1990

Typical Farm Theory In Agricultural Research, Dillon Feuz, Melvin Skold

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Economists, farm managers, financial advisors and policy makers frequently need to conduct farm level analyses. There is a continual need to evaluate changing technologies, government farm program effects, and changing market conditions at the farm level. The implications of changing financial conditions, policy options or technological alternatives must be understood at the farm level for educational programs to be designed or for necessary policy incentives to be offered to achieve the desired income support, supply response, or shifts in resource use. When conducting farm level research, one is always faced with difficult decisions concerning the type of data on which …

Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman Oct 1990

Impacts On California Agriculture Of A Ban On Rice Straw Burning, B. Gardner Delworth, Richard E. Howitt, Charles Goodman

Faculty Publications

The burning of agricultural residues, particularly rice straw, has long been an issue of public concern in California's Sacramento Valley. Especially during days of autumn temperature inversions, the smoke in the atmosphere from burning is regarded by some as a serious health hazard and by nearly all residents as a public nuisance. Strong pressures have resulted in stringent regulations over agricultural burning, but a growing number of voices advocate a strict prohibition on burning. The prospect of a burning ban is worrisome to rice growers since burning is not only the most cost-effective way of disposing of the straw, but …

Perceived Stress, Social Support And Survival: North Carolina Farm Operators And The Farm Crisis, Michael D. Schulman, Paula S. Armstrong Sep 1990

Perceived Stress, Social Support And Survival: North Carolina Farm Operators And The Farm Crisis, Michael D. Schulman, Paula S. Armstrong

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The current farm crisis draws attention to the sources and consequences of the stress process among farm operators. Using panel data from statewide surveys of North Carolina farm operators collected during a period of economic and ecological crisis, the relationships among perceived stress, social support, and survival in agriculture are investigated. Analyses reveal that while the level of perceived stress has no relationship with survival, social support has a significant impact upon both social psychological (plans to remain in farming) and behavioral (continuing as a farm operator) dimensions of survival in agriculture. Perceived social support increased plans to remain in …

Economic Analysis Of Rangeland Leasing Practices And Rates, Larry Janssen, Martin Beutler, John Cole

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Major Characteristics of 444 rangeland leasing arrangements used by South Dakota ranchers were examined. Econometric modeling results indicate lease rates per acre from 1986-1988 are explained by tract productivity (AUM's), tract size, regional location, selected leasing practices, and by type of lease (private, state, tribal trust, or federal).

Women In Agriculture: Challenging The Future: Summary Of The 1990 Conference, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty Jul 1990

Women In Agriculture: Challenging The Future: Summary Of The 1990 Conference, Burton Pflueger, Rebecca Lafferty

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The first "Women in Agriculture" conference (WIA) was held in South Dakota in March, 1990. The conference was designed to enhance the woman's role as part of the farm/ranch management team. The conference was well attended and the final evaluations reveal a high level of satisfaction and a desire for continuation of the program. Two counties in South Dakota have created "spinoffs" from the program. Hutchinson County has a support group of farm women that gather on a regular basis. Davison County is currently planning a program that is also designed to enhance farm management skills directed specifically at women. …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1989-90, Bruce B. Johnson, Timothy Schroeder Jul 1990

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1989-90, Bruce B. Johnson, Timothy Schroeder

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

In Nebraska, 1989 was another year of active market activity and increasing agricultural land values. These were two of the findings evident from the 1990 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey reports. The 1990 survey revealed a smaller average rate of increase of 9 percent during the 12-month period ending February 1, 1990 than reported for the year earlier. This smaller increase is a reflection of previous increases in farmland values and some decrease in net farm income during 1989.

The crop reporting districts showing the highest average land value change for the 12-month period were the North and Central …

Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard Jan 1990

Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard

Agribusiness

Milk production supply response at the regional level for the U.S. dairy sector is estimated through the use of dynamic dual models. Adjustment rates and elasticity measures are presented, and then the estimated parameter coefficients are used to stimulate shifts in production resulting from price changes. A drop in milk price designed to realign market conditions is projected to be borne largely by the Corn Belt and, to a lesser extent, the western states.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter To The American Chamber Of Commerce, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Most Americans won't ever forget -- and I certainly won't -- the news photos taken of the destruction of the Berlin Wall. But even as this political wall was toppling, other walls were going up, ever higher, around the world. I am talking about economic walls -- the subsidies, import bans, price supports, and other policies - which are distorting, and threatening to destroy, the world's agricultural trade.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Journal Of Commerce And The National Foreign Trade Council's Uruguay Round Conference By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutier, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is time to quit pretending that supply management works as a farm income enhancement program. It may in the short run; it doesn't in the long run. It is time to stop pretending that protectionist trade policies help America's agriculture. They may in the short run; they don't in the long run.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Organization For Economic Cooperation And Development Ministerial Meeting By U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeuiter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

This is a particularly important time for us to be gathering for this Ministerial meeting. The Uruguay Round of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is entering a crucial period. It is imperative that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) make a strong statement of support for freer and fairer trade in all fields, including agriculture. The nations of the world are looking to the OECD to clearly point the way toward an improved world trading system.

It is a pleasure for me to be with you today at the annual meeting of the International Office of Epizootics. I would first like to congratulate the recipients of your gold and silver awards, which I am sure are well-deserved. I also want to state how much the United States has appreciated the efforts of Director-General Blajan. Although we have only been a member of OlE since 1978, we have developed great respect for this organization. OlE is held in high regard throughout the world, and the firm and competent leadership of Dr. Blajan has been a major reason …

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

SEC. YEUTTER: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this auspicious tree-planting ceremony. We're delighted to have you all here. That's quite a tree that we're going to be planting. I'm not sure we're going to get that job done with two shovels, but maybe that depends on how fast people shovel. At any rate, we'll give you some experience in that regard very shortly. As we begin the program, I'd like to spend just two minutes giving the essence of what the morning's activity is about. Then, I'll introduce some of our special guests here, and then, of …

Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture Before The Senate Committee On Agriculture, Nutrition, And Forestry February 7, 1990, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, I welcome the invitation to appear today to discuss the 1990 Farm Bill. The making of farm policy in 1990 will be truly historic. The road that we take over the coming months will be vital to u.s. farmers, the American public, and, in fact, the world. As you know, we have been working very hard at the USDA and within the Administration for many months to develop proposals that we believe will best serve our nation's food and fiber industries and all Americans. Yesterday we unveiled our ideas. This morning, I would …

The Agricultural Implications Of Europe 1992, Ross Kingwell Jan 1990

The Agricultural Implications Of Europe 1992, Ross Kingwell

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Most farmers know only too well that the policies of national and international governments affect the prices they receive for their produce. The Europe 1992 policy is a new policy with potential to benefit Australian agriculture. The Europe 1992 policy is a set of policy initiatives being adopted by member countries of the European Economic Community (EC). The 1992 policy aims to create a barrier-free internal market among EC members by the end of 1992. All impediments to trade within the EC are to be dismantled. The Europe 1992 policy is already causing change in many European markets and is …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery By Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture To The Chicago Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It's a great pleasure for me to be back in Chicago, especially when it means seeing so many friends and acquaintances. I'd like to thank The Chicago Farmers for extending to me this invitation to talk with you today about America's agricultural future. As you know, Congress is struggling to resolve differences between their respective versions of the 1990 Farm Bill. What you may not know -- and what I'd like to discuss with you today -- is that in several notable instances neither version reflects what America's farmers have asked for, nor what America's farmers, as well as America's …

"Trade Reform, The Key To The Future Of U.S. Farming", Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I have been asked innumerable times why world agricultural trade reform is so important to U.S. farmers. Some of the people doing the asking are often afraid of what such reform might mean to U.S. agriculture. A question I occasionally ask back is, "What is there to fear?" If we are the efficient agricultural producers we say we are -- and I believe we are - then the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) offers American farmers an unprecedented opportunity to gain market share in the growing world markets for food. American agriculture has not …

Entral Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1989, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

The Nigerian economy showed improvement in 1989 compared to 1988. Economic Growth: Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 4.0%, driven by growth in agriculture and industry. The overall balance of payments moved from a deficit to a surplus, largely due to a significant increase in crude oil exports. The unemployment rate declined slightly, with more jobs created through government programs. Nigeria's external assets increased significantly, reflecting a deliberate policy to build official reserves. Inflation: Despite some improvement, inflationary pressures remained high, with domestic prices rising by 40.9%. Stagnant Manufacturing: Manufacturing production grew at a slow pace due to high production …

The Economic Value Of Grazing Public Lands In Western South Dakota, Martin Beutler Dec 1989

The Economic Value Of Grazing Public Lands In Western South Dakota, Martin Beutler

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

South Dakota has relatively few acres of public rangeland when compared to other western states. However, public grazing in South Dakota can have a major impact on local area economies in which public grazing occurs. Total harvested AUMs have declined over the study period. The total value of public land grazing has climbed mainly due to higher cattle prices. In 1988, South Dakota public lands participated in the production of approximately $35 million in gross livestock production. This gross production generated an estimated $66 million in economic activity to the region. In 1988, public lands accounted for an estimated $22.8 …

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan Dec 1989

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan

Agribusiness

For years the major management concern of farm managers was farm production. In the 1970s and 1980s, the importance of finance and marketing emerged as two additional critical success factors in production agriculture. A fourth management area of growing importance to successful farming is managing labor (Thomas and Erven 1989). Total employment in farming has been steadily decreasing to less than 4% of Canada's labor force in 1984 from close to 20% in 1950 (Agriculture Canada 1984). However, the labor remaining in agriculture has been changing structure, with a greater proportion of hired labor. Hired labor accounted for 30% of …

Linkages Between Prices Of Agriculture Commodities And Processed Final Products, Bashir Qasmi, Brian Schmiesing

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper presents an introductory discussion o f the linkages between the price of the primary commodity and the products produced from the primary commodity. First, a case is discussed where the primary commodity is processed into an intermediate product and then into a final product. As in this case, at each successive stage of processing, the transformation results in only one product. This case is referred to as the single product case. In the second case the primary commodity is processed into two products simultaneously in a fixed proportion. This case is the joint product case.
