The Impact Of The Agricultural Risk Protection Act Of 2000 On Crop Insurance Programs, H. Douglas Jose Jan 2001

The Impact Of The Agricultural Risk Protection Act Of 2000 On Crop Insurance Programs, H. Douglas Jose

Cornhusker Economics

After considerable discussion and alternative proposals, crop insurance reform became a reality in the form of the Agricultural Risk Protection Act (ARPA) last summer. Here are some of the key features of the act.

The Potential For Hard White Winter Wheat In Nebraska, Richard K. Perrin, Phil Anthony Jan 2001

The Potential For Hard White Winter Wheat In Nebraska, Richard K. Perrin, Phil Anthony

Cornhusker Economics

Hard white winter wheat, a crop developed using traditional crop breeding techniques, is a new crop with some potential payoff for Nebraska wheat producers. Phil Anthony, currently a Masters' degree student in the Dept. of Agricultural Economics, completed a study of the economic potential for this crop as part of a senior honors project while an undergraduate at UNL. The following is based largely on that study.

The Changing Nature Of “Success”, Wade Nutzman Jan 2001

The Changing Nature Of “Success”, Wade Nutzman

Cornhusker Economics

What is the definition of a good farmer/rancher? Of course, that has always depended a great deal on whom you ask, as well as their age. As things have changed, so has this definition, in my opinion.

Working individually with many Nebraska farmers and ranchers over several years has given me a chance to recognize some patterns. Here are a few common threads, along with some reasons those valued qualities continue to change.

Fertilizer Diversification, Glenn A. Helmers Jan 2001

Fertilizer Diversification, Glenn A. Helmers

Cornhusker Economics

Crop diversification is commonly regarded as a risk reducing strategy to moderate the impacts of variable crop prices and yields. The addition of one or more livestock enterprises may lead to still greater income stability for an agricultural producer. Diversification reduces income volatility whenever low returns in one enterprise are associated with relatively moderate or high returns in another enterprise. The reverse phenomenon (moderate or relatively high returns in the first enterprise, occurring during years of low returns for the second enterprise) is also necessary for diversification to be effective. The greater the tendency for enterprise returns from different enterprises …

Murgo Farms Inc.: Haccp, Iso 9000, And Iso 14000, David Sparling, Jonathon Lee, Wayne Howard Jan 2001

Murgo Farms Inc.: Haccp, Iso 9000, And Iso 14000, David Sparling, Jonathon Lee, Wayne Howard

Agribusiness

Murgo Farms Inc., addresses the challenge of choosing between the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 9000, and ISO 14000 systems for a business with grain farming, elevator and spraying enterprises. Murgo has recently entered markets that are more quality oriented and wishes to expand its activities in those markets. The President wonders whether HACCP or ISO 9000 might help that expansion. However, the company is also faced with significant environmental risks due to its spraying and manure spreading activities and its proximity to a local municipal water source. There are good reasons for Murgo …

The Place Of The Eighteenth Century In American Agricultural History, Richard Bushman Jan 2001

The Place Of The Eighteenth Century In American Agricultural History, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

On the eve of the Revolution about 80 percent of the labor force of British North America worked in agriculture. Most colonists spent the majority of their waking hours doing farm work. People of all classes and ethnic origins (men, women, and many children) devoted their days to planting tobacco, husking corn, building fences, milking cows, slaughtering pings, clearing brush, weeding vegetables, churning butter, killing chickens, salting meat, and hoeing, hoeing, hoeing. Native Americans hunted more than Europeans and Africans, but Indians, too, worked the soil. The vast bulk of the population spent its energies from dawn to dusk, day …

Valuing Farmland Conservation Easements, Steven B. Mitchell, Bruce B. Johnson Jan 2001

Valuing Farmland Conservation Easements, Steven B. Mitchell, Bruce B. Johnson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

According to USDA estimates, more than 2 million acres of farmland are developed for urban and other nonagricultural uses each year. Nearly 30 percent of this acreage is considered prime farmland—farmland that has the soil quality, growing season, and moisture supply needed to sustain high yields when managed according to acceptable farming methods. Much of the farmland being lost lies in two of the nation’s major agricultural states, California and Florida, which account for much of the nation’s fruit and vegetable production. However, the land conversion process is occurring in every state to some degree. In Nebraska, thousands of acres …

Slotting Allowances And Price–Cost Margins: A Note, Azzeddine Azzam Jan 2001

Slotting Allowances And Price–Cost Margins: A Note, Azzeddine Azzam

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

It has become common practice for retail grocers to charge grocery manufacturers a slotting allowance for placing products on the retail shelf. Manufacturers view the allowance as anti-competitive. Retailers view it as compensation for the risks associated with stocking new products. The largely theoretical literature on the subject is consistent with both views. This article proposes an empirical model to test the effect of slotting allowances on performance, and discusses if and how the model can be tied to the qualitative predictions of existing theoretical literature.

Separating The Impacts Of Crop Diversification And Rotations On Risk, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles F. Yamoah, Gary E. Varvel Jan 2001

Separating The Impacts Of Crop Diversification And Rotations On Risk, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles F. Yamoah, Gary E. Varvel

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

It has been commonly accepted that crop rotations reduce risk compared with monoculture systems. Quantifying this phenomenon requires that effects of yield stability on risk (positive or negative) arising from rotating crops be separated from other risk elements. Using an ARS–University of Nebraska series of yields for corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grown over a 14-yr period, both in rotation and in monoculture, the impact of crop rotation on risk was isolated and estimated. Risk was defined as the failure to meet an annual per-hectare net return target. A corn–soybean rotation had significantly …

Livestock Production Costs Of Small Ranches On The Central Altiplano, Alfredo Benito Lopez Jan 2001

Livestock Production Costs Of Small Ranches On The Central Altiplano, Alfredo Benito Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

One of the more important economic activities in the Altiplano region is raising livestock, the exploitation of cattle, sheep, and llamas which are raised and adapted to the conditions surrounding this activity. Livestock production plays a fundamental role in the economy of farming families by providing them products such as meat, milk, cheese, fiber, skins, and other products that each translate into monetary revenues. The present study was carried out in the community of "Chama 6 de julio," Ingavi Province, Department of La Paz, about 83 km. (51.6 miles) outside of La Paz at an elevation of 3,792 m. (12,440 …

Ecological Sustainability For Pastoral Management, Hugh Pringle, Ken Tinley Jan 2001

Ecological Sustainability For Pastoral Management, Hugh Pringle, Ken Tinley

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Pastoralists and rangeland bureaucracies are now required to operate within the limits of ecological sustainability. However, while the concept of ecological sustainability has been enshrined in law and policy at State and Commonwealth levels in Australia, there has been little translation into pastoral management objectives. The introduction of the 'EMU (Ecosystem Management Unit) process', as an equal partnership between ecologists and pastoralists, promises to bring pastoralists into close dialogue with the landscapes they manage on their stations, and to acknowledge and manage for values other than pasture production. In doing so, pastoralists are likely to increase production, reduce costs, and …

Analysis Of A Mixed Cereal Of Legumes That Processes Similar Nutritional Characteristics To A Cereal Product Of Local Consumption And Its Economic Feasibility, Willy Ivan Anzaldo Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

In this analysis, we plan on developing vegetable mixes with high nutritional qualities and instant fuel consumption. These are to be used as a nutritional supplement in the feeding of children from 6 months of age. Initially, I selected the raw material, due to its high protein content and low cost (soy, tarhui, Cuban corn, rice, wheat, barley). They formed mixes with nutritional characteristics similar to the control for reference (15.5% of protein, 419 kcal of energy). From these formulas, different tests of completed production of mixtures, going so far as to obtain eight mixes with good nutritional and organoleptic …

This study viewed how internally and externally induced factors could give impact towards the scope and direction of the national agricultural sector development. The agricultural sector played a vital role in generating national economic development via its contributions as a source of national income, employment for the majority community of rural areas and as a strategic sector that provides the national foods needs. In line with the tremendous development and achievement of the national economy particularly since the 1980s, the sector had shown deterioration in terms of its contribution to the GDP, employment and value-added of the sector. Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton Dec 2000

Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton

Agribusiness

Grading is important to ensure the production of high-quality foods, but It Is usually done with error, distorting market signals and diminishing Incentives to produce high-quality products. Size is the main quality criterion for dried prunes and the crucial characteristic In determining prune value. We studied the economic effects of errors In commodity grading, focusing In particular on the Implications of one-way (asymmetric) grading errors, namely when small, low quality product Is erroneously classified as high quality, but not vice versa. In an application to the California prune Industry, we estimated the extent to which large prunes are undervalued and …

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson Dec 2000

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

An international environmental organization would need to be loosely structured initially with a focus on a narrow range of environmental issues. It also would need to emphasize consensus and limit the scope of its interventions to avoid defections by important participants. The benefits of such an organization include the potential for achieving more nearly optimal levels of environmental protection, cost savings from reduction of duplication and managerial economies of scale, and the strengthening of environmental interests in negotiations on the coordination of the environmental regime with other international regimes such as those focusing on trade or development.

A Better Harvest, Tushaar Shah Dec 2000

A Better Harvest, Tushaar Shah

IIMB Management Review

In 1972, the prices of fossil fuel suddenly shot up and with it there was enormous escalation in fertiliser prices. People were therefore very pessimistic about the future of agriculture in the country, though the Green Revolution had been hailed only a few years before. So in my talk on Our Agriculture Future in 1973 I said that what we needed was an integrated approach: a farming systems approach looking at our land and water resources. I also spoke about the concept of Sarvodaya Agriculture, which is a high synergy society of farmers, managing and caring for natural resources like …
