Animal Cruelty - Who To Blame?, Fakhra Afzal

MSJ Capstone Projects

This piece on animals is a journalistic work where on field situation and visits are recorded coupled with interviews from the sources. It must be noted that the animal lives in a deplorable state in Pakistan, so much so, that there are no fresh legislation since the country gained independence from Britishers in 1947.The same goes true for the state of animal hospitals. Richmond Crawford is the only government run hospital in the metropolis Karachi and the private hospitals are suitable for pet owners only, in a position to go an extra mile to spend money on their imported pets. …

The Complex Relationship Between Celebrity-Driven Magazines And Depictions Of Fertility At Advanced Reproductive Ages, Brennan Peterson Oct 2019

The Complex Relationship Between Celebrity-Driven Magazines And Depictions Of Fertility At Advanced Reproductive Ages, Brennan Peterson

Marriage and Family Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

"In this issue of the Journal of Women’s Health, Willson and colleagues explore how age and fertility are portrayed in celebrity-driven magazines.1 Specifically, they examine if popular media depictions of celebrity pregnancies present accurate information related to age and fertility, the use of assisted reproductive technology (ARTs), and pregnancy-related risks associated with advanced maternal age (AMA >35 years). Their study provides an important viewpoint related to the impact of media on reproductive perceptions, and its potential intersection with delayed childbearing, fertility awareness, and reproductive decision making."

Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn't Good Enough, Danielle Westmark, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa L. Hartman Oct 2019

Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn't Good Enough, Danielle Westmark, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa L. Hartman

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Objective: To optimize librarian-mediated search services, librarians must consider all aspects of their search service that affect service utilization and efficacy. The library literature provides little information concerning the format in which libraries are providing literature search results and even less on the effect of format on search service utilization.  At our academic health science library, the number of search requests received rose dramatically after we began providing results in RefShare format. RefShare is the collaboration tool available in ProQuest’s RefWorks®.  We wanted to know how other libraries were providing results and whether they had seen format affect search service …

The Effects Of Certain And Uncertain Incentives On Effort And Knowledge Accuracy, Thomas Jamieson, Nicholas Weller Oct 2019

The Effects Of Certain And Uncertain Incentives On Effort And Knowledge Accuracy, Thomas Jamieson, Nicholas Weller

Public Administration Faculty Publications

In many situations, incentives exist to acquire knowledge and make correct political decisions. We conduct an experiment that contributes to a small but growing literature on incentives and political knowledge, testing the effect of certain and uncertain incentives on knowledge. Our experiment builds on the basic theoretical point that acquiring and using information is costly, and incentives for accurate answers will lead respondents to expend greater effort on the task and be more likely to answer knowledge questions correctly. We test the effect of certain and uncertain incentives and find that both increase effort and accuracy relative to the control …

Rumination Selectively Mediates The Association Between Actual-Ideal (But Not Actual-Ought) Self-Discrepancy And Anxious And Depressive Symptoms, Joanne M. Dickson, Nicholas J. Moberly, Christopher D. Huntley Oct 2019

Rumination Selectively Mediates The Association Between Actual-Ideal (But Not Actual-Ought) Self-Discrepancy And Anxious And Depressive Symptoms, Joanne M. Dickson, Nicholas J. Moberly, Christopher D. Huntley

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Actual-ideal and actual-ought self-discrepancies have been theorised to be independently associated with depressive and anxious symptoms respectively. This study tested this prediction and extended it to consider whether rumination mediates these relationships. One hundred and thirty-eight students (48 males, 90 females) listed four adjectives describing how they would ideally hope to be and four adjectives describing how they ought to be. Participants then rated how distant they perceived themselves to be from each of their ideal and ought selves, as well as the importance of each ideal and ought self. Finally, participants self-reported levels of negative rumination, anxious and depressive …

Social Dimensions Of Student Debt: A Data Mining Analysis, Dirk Witteveen, Paul Attewell Oct 2019

Social Dimensions Of Student Debt: A Data Mining Analysis, Dirk Witteveen, Paul Attewell

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Media commentary on undergraduates' loan debt portrays a crisis in which many students are unable to pay back their loans, having borrowed large sums and lacking sufficient post-college income to repay. Several scholars have questioned the media accounts, noting that indebtedness is highest among students from high income families, while defaults predominate among low debt students. Using a data mining technique known as CART, we analyze national data on the indebtedness of recent baccalaureate graduates, to uncover combinations of social characteristics that are associated with loan pressure: the ratio of indebtedness to post-college earnings. We find that students from lower …

Exiting The Fragility Trap : Rethinking Our Approach To The World’S Most Fragile States, David Carment, Yiagadeesen Samy Oct 2019

Exiting The Fragility Trap : Rethinking Our Approach To The World’S Most Fragile States, David Carment, Yiagadeesen Samy

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

State fragility is a much-debated yet underinvestigated concept in the development and international security worlds. Based on years of research as part of the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy project at Carleton University, Exiting the Fragility Trap marks a major step toward remedying the lack of research into the so-called fragility trap. In examining the nature and dynamics of state transitions in fragile contexts, with a special emphasis on states that are trapped in fragility, David Carment and Yiagadeesen Samy ask three questions: Why do some states remain stuck in a fragility trap? What lessons can we learn from those …

The Art Of Occupation : Crime And Governance In American-Controlled Germany, 1944–1949, Thomas J. Kehoe Oct 2019

The Art Of Occupation : Crime And Governance In American-Controlled Germany, 1944–1949, Thomas J. Kehoe

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

The literature describing social conditions during the post–World War II Allied occupation of Germany has been divided between seemingly irreconcilable assertions of prolonged criminal chaos and narratives of strict martial rule that precluded crime. In The Art of Occupation, Thomas J. Kehoe takes a different view on this history, addressing this divergence through an extensive, interdisciplinary analysis of the interaction between military government and social order.

Focusing on the American Zone and using previously unexamined American and German military reports, court records, and case files, Kehoe assesses crime rates and the psychology surrounding criminality. He thereby offers the first comprehensive …

Deaf And Dying: Deaf People And The Process Of Dying, Bruce Munro-Ludders

JADARA

This paper examines some of the current literature on the experiences of dying and integrates this together with the parameters that may constitute the experiences of a deaf and dying person. Influences from the American culture, processes of dying, developmental issues in learning about death and dying, and the role as teacher that the deaf community provides to deaf people are examined.

This literature is combined with issues of deafness and dying. Communication issues and coping abilities of deaf people, and the necessity for a comprehensive standard of care that includes the needs of the deaf patient, family, and health …
