The ACRL Diversity Alliance “unites academic libraries committed to increasing the hiring pipeline of qualified and talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.” As a member of the Alliance, LSU made the commitment to: establish a residency program for at least one individual, lasting a minimum of two years; design experiences at the local level to expand the residents’ interests and skills; serve as a resource to those institutions participating in the ACRL Diversity Alliance; provide at a minimum the same level of professional development support provided other library faculty/staff/employees; and provide a salary for the resident commensurate with …

Treatment Patterns And Economic Burden Of Sickle-Cell Disease Patients Prescribed Hydroxyurea: A Retrospective Claims-Based Study, Nirmish Shah, Menaka Bhor, Lin Xie, Rashid Halloway, Steve Arcona, Jincy Paulose, Huseyin Yuce
Publications and Research
Background: This study aimed to evaluate sickle-cell disease (SCD) treatment patterns and economic burden among patients prescribed hydroxyurea (HU) in the US, through claims data.
Methods: SCD patients with pharmacy claims for HU were selected from the Medicaid Analytic Extracts (MAX) from January 1, 2009 - December 31, 2013. The first HU prescription during the identification period was defined as the index date and patients were required to have had continuous medical and pharmacy benefits for ≥6 months baseline and 12 months follow-up periods. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, health care utilization, and costs were examined, and variables were …

Communication About Influenza Prevention: A Case Study Of Arkansas State University Students Health Center, Oyeronke Oyindamola Afolabi
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this case-study was to examine what and how the Arkansas State University Student Health Center (ASUSHC) communicates about influenza and influenza vaccination. To this end, the researcher conducted thematic analysis of social media posts and flyers disseminated by the ASUSCH on influenza and influenza vaccinations. ASUSHC provides an array of medical services including treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, physical exams, and immunizations. I adopted a reflective memoing in conducting a thematic analysis as recommended by Ryan and Branerd (2003). There were two research questions posed and four themes emerged from the first research question which are: …
Accounting Assumptions And The Farm Business, Timothy Meyer
Accounting Assumptions And The Farm Business, Timothy Meyer
Cornhusker Economics
Farmers in Nebraska and the surrounding area have been slow to adopt accrual accounting methods. This is no surprise; the alternative, cash accounting, is simple, provides a real-time analysis of the cash position of the firm, and works well with income tax preparation. However, cash accounting has no methodology for the special timing of agricultural production or specific processes to evaluate profitability, liquidity, or solvency. Accrual accounting, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and finally the FFSC (Farm Financial Standards Council) rectify these shortcomings. Adoption of GAAP, and subsequently the FFSC “tweaks” will allow farmers and ranchers in Nebraska to make …

As the Latino/a population increases externalizing behaviors among adolescents continue to concern researchers and clinicians. National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) data were used to analyze direct and indirect effects of parenting and academic factors on externalizing behavior among Latino/a adolescents over time, using latent growth curves and structural equation modeling (SEM). Results indicated that higher levels of maternal warmth, the adolescent-teacher relationship, and academic achievement were all negatively associated with initial levels of externalizing behavior and in some cases negatively predicted the rate of change of externalizing behavior. Some predictors were also all found to be positively …

[First paragraphs]
While we continue to produce theoretical concepts, frameworks, and ideas in library and information studies (LIS), these developments are not being tested and tried ‘on the ground.’ There is an imbalance of research across the disciplines in LIS coming out of the field, rather than out of the academy (Morris & Cahill, 2017).
This study proposes a systematic review of the literature to examine the prevalence and presentation of original research produced by LIS practitioners. Numerous calls have been made for librarians to increase their use of evidence (Luo & McKinney, 2015; Morris & Cahill, 2017; Todd, 2008) …

Deaf Community College Transfer Students Moving To The National Technical Institute For The Deaf: A Comparative Analysis, Gerard Buckley
Deaf Community College Transfer Students Moving To The National Technical Institute For The Deaf: A Comparative Analysis, Gerard Buckley
JADARA
Community colleges are estimated to be serving 3,000-5,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing students annually. A growing number of these community college students are seeking to continue their postsecondary education at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. This study examined the experiences of community college students who moved to NTID and involved a comparative analysis of this group with a group of native students who enrolled in the Institute during the same time period (1979-1983). Transfers and natives were compared on 28 variables with four major areas: Entry-level characteristics, entry-level academic skills, entry-level communication skills and academic achievement at RIT. Significant …
Identifying Independent Living Skills Needs Of Traditionally Underserved Persons Who Are Deaf, Stephen J. Larew, Greg Long, Misha Mittal
Identifying Independent Living Skills Needs Of Traditionally Underserved Persons Who Are Deaf, Stephen J. Larew, Greg Long, Misha Mittal
JADARA
Deafness rehabilitation literature has documented the need to develop independent living skills training for traditionally underserved persons who are deaf. Prior to developing training programs, it is necessary to identify the priority needs areas of the target population. A survey was conducted with deafness rehabilitation professionals to identify the priority needs of the traditionally underserved deaf population. Respondents were asked to evaluate independent living skills areas for importance and observed competency among the target population. Based on responses to this survey, eleven priority independent living skills needs areas were identified. This information will be used as a guide to collect, …
An Approach For Developing National Guidelines For Postsecondary Support Services Programs, John Schroedel, Donnell H. Ashmore, Alan T. Hurwitz
An Approach For Developing National Guidelines For Postsecondary Support Services Programs, John Schroedel, Donnell H. Ashmore, Alan T. Hurwitz
JADARA
This paper presents a case for developing standards for specialized support programs serving deaf students in postsecondary institutions. A step-by-step plan for producing standards for the evaluation, development, and accreditation of these programs is outlined. Criteria for forming flexible standards which (1) account for variations in program size and type and (2) enhance support services which make postsecondary education more accessible for deaf students are clarified. The importance of teamwork between postsecondary specialists and generalists to link standards for special service programs to the process of accrediting regular institutions of higher education is emphasized. An example of accrediting a special …
