Conference Presentation presented at PLAI 2019 National Congress in Tagaytay City, Philippines.
Libraries across the world—especially in the US and Asia—are rapidly changing. New technology, trends, and user needs are all driving libraries to adapt. This includes being more inclusive (meeting all users’ needs, of diverse backgrounds), more innovative (overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities), and more interconnected (forging partnerships and making creative connections). This paper presentation will showcase inspiring, real-life examples of just such libraries! The two co-presenters bring first-hand experience in featuring these showcased libraries. The first leads the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), a professional library organization …

Conference Presentation presented at Charleston Conference 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Subject librarians are uniquely poised to facilitate conversations and assistance about scholarly communication topics to faculty and students -- helping make the connections between scholarly communication and discipline-specific research. The University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries offers a unique intersection between scholarly communication and subject librarians by implementing a robust subject librarian model that includes activities related to scholarly communication and partnering with UCF’s Office of Scholarly Communication to provide support on a variety of topics to the campus community. In particular, this model has been particularly effective with …

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Introducing research into UG curriculum is critical toward the development of empirically informed future researchers and practitioners. Developing mechanisms to embed research into curriculum and culture can be challenging. To address these challenges, our UG psychology program has implemented initiatives to increase research participation. We will discuss several which include embedded class research, laboratory experiments, poster opportunities, and faculty research team participation. We also facilitate UG through research centers, partnering with public and private organizations, and novel approaches such as Roach Lab (roachlab.org). We will specifically highlight outcomes attributed to engaging students in research.

How does free help me? Useful things like GPS Software
Posted: October 25th, 2019Once upon a time the only way to find an address was to look at a paper map. Remember your first day at UCF? How hard it was to find the right building? Did you get lost? That used to be true going pretty much any place new.
Now with GPS, you can have someone tell you how to get somewhere step by step. You can even select a British or Australian narrator. Like many conveniences in our lives, this is a result of the …

Ever hear of a little company called 23andMe? For around $100, you can get a breakdown of your global heritage. You can even get it for your dog or cat.
The availability to learn more about our own ancestry or genetic health markers is a result of the Human Genome Project. The original mapping of human DNA took thirteen years to complete, and involved 20 institutions around the globe. It is considered the world’s largest collaborative biological project, with a price tag of …

Florida is called the sunshine state for more than just the weather. It has one of the broadest public record laws in the nation, with origins dating back to 1909. On the bright side, this wide interpretation of public records provides transparency in state public agencies.
It could also be considered a factor in the creation of the internet meme “Florida Man.” This meme is based on strange news stories or crimes that take place in our home state and is …

Posted: October 22nd, 2019
Yesterday we talked a little bit about the Open Access movement to share research. Today we are going to focus on the benefits of having research freely available. Let’s look at a government agency right in our own backyard — NASA. You may not realize this, but NASA research and technology has contributed to the development of everything from LED lighting to temper foam mattresses. Unlike Area 51, NASA likes to share what it knows, and collaborates with industry partners in all kinds of ways. Here …

How does free help me? Informative things like Wikipedia
Posted: October 21st, 2019
We use it for everything – historical information, explaining movie endings, and biographies of our favorite celebrities. Wikipedia began in 2001, which is roughly the same time as a movement called Open Access, which we are celebrating this week.
Before Wikipedia, hard cover books with a collection of facts were printed. These encyclopedias were expensive and it was hard to keep the information current. Just as Wikipedia makes facts more easily available to everyone using the Internet, Open Access hopes to do the same thing. However, it …

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Social Media Group initially created the CALA Social Media Tag Library in Fall 2017 to facilitate better navigation and search for social media channels, particularly the CALA Facebook public page and promote the organization’s programs and activities. The Social Media Group introduced the creation of the Tag Library to the CALA community in Summer 2018, but the tags were limited to member-only, internal use. In Spring 2019, the restructured CALA Social Media Committee reviewed, enriched, and standardized the Tag Library, and decided to make it publicly available for anyone interested in posting to CALA’s …
The Influence Of Spirituality, Moral Reasoning, And Personality Factors On Misogyny, Rachel Mcpherson
The Influence Of Spirituality, Moral Reasoning, And Personality Factors On Misogyny, Rachel Mcpherson
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Sexism, prejudice or discrimination typically against women, is an attitude that causes emotional distress and can negatively affect women's psychological and physical health. Studies have shown that psychological distress heightens when women are subjected to sexist events (Szymanski, Gupta, Carr, & Stewart, 2009). Sexism exists in the classroom, workplace, and politics, and is virtually inescapable for women (Miner-Rubino, 2007). It is common for women who are in positions of power to be unjustly branded with cruel epithets (Manne, 2016). Despite the modernity of today's culture and progression of gender equality, sexism is still a prevalent issue. This study assesses underlying …
Development Of A New Scale For Evaluating Authoritarianism, Melodie Spiegel
Development Of A New Scale For Evaluating Authoritarianism, Melodie Spiegel
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Despite the existence of multiple scales purporting to measure degree of authoritarianism as a personality trait, there exists disagreement within current research as to whether these measures reliably measure the three hypothesized domains of authoritarian submission, aggression, and traditionalism. This study focuses on the development of a new scale in response to methodological and validity concerns of previously-used measures. The new scale provides a reliable measure of authoritarian belief within the tested sample of college-aged students. Factor analysis of responses to the items of the new measure also provides evidence of the multidimensionality of authoritarianism as a construct. Further, significant …
The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box
The Effects Of Institutional Support Of Endangered Languages On Language Ideologies, Christy Box
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Endangered languages are those that are spoken by a very small percentage of the population and are at risk of disappearing with all the knowledge and diversity they contain. Endangered languages often become endangered because the speakers and the society perceive the language as low status or of little use, and a positive change in perception of the language could aid in revitalizing the language. Institutions such as governments, businesses, and universities have recently begun supporting endangered languages in several areas, and this support could greatly affect language ideologies, perceptions of and attitudes about the language. In this research project, …

Stepping Outside Of Yourself: Social Anxiety, Dissociation, Alcohol Consequences, And Relationship Satisfaction, Matthew Cook
Stepping Outside Of Yourself: Social Anxiety, Dissociation, Alcohol Consequences, And Relationship Satisfaction, Matthew Cook
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
OVERVIEW: Social anxiety disorder is the third most prevalent psychiatric disorder in the United States. Dissociation can arise during acute daily social stressors in individuals with social anxiety. This study examined the relationship between social anxiety and functional outcomes (i.e., alcohol-related consequences and relationship satisfaction) as moderated by levels of dissociation (i.e., depersonalization/derealization). It was hypothesized that dissociation would moderate the relationships between social anxiety and alcohol-related consequences and between social anxiety and relationship satisfaction. METHOD: College students who endorsed alcohol use within the past 30 days (n = 320) and college students who reported having been in a romantic …

This study evaluated the relationship between three different dimensions of sibling abuse– verbal, physical, and sexual– and communicative social adaptability and risk-taking outcomes. A quantitative survey (N = 477) explored the frequency of such abuse among college students and self-reported risk-taking behavior, social experience, social wit, appropriate self-disclosure, social confirmation, and social composure. Moreover, participants responded to nominal prompts asking whether they ever reported their sibling abuse. Independent sample t-tests and correlation tests show that survivors of sibling trauma are moee likely to appropriately disclose socially and are more likely to report engaging in an index of various risky behaviors …
