Program Outcome Research In Residential Programs For Deaf Mentally Ill Adults, Cynthia Nickless

JADARA

A brief description is presented of a recent research investigation of program outcome in a deaf, mentally ill adult population. General benefits and limitations of outcome research are discussed. Cross Cultural Ethics In The Conduct Of Deafness Research, Robert Q. Pollard Jr. Oct 2019

Cross Cultural Ethics In The Conduct Of Deafness Research, Robert Q. Pollard Jr.

JADARA

This paper argues for and illustrates the application of contemporary cross-cultural ethical principle sand practices in deafness research. The relevance of framing some deafness researchas cross-cultural is first explained. A gradient is defined where cultural bearing varies from low to high, depending on a study’s topic and design. It is concluded that scientists should employ contemporary cross-cultural ethical practices when their studies have cultural bearing. The evolution and nature of these special ethical practices are then detailed. They extend research protections beyond the individual participant to the host community as a collective entity. They address: relations with the heterogeneous host …

Research On Deaf Individuals By Hearing Persons: One Deaf Researcher’S Perspective, Michael S. Stinson Oct 2019

Research On Deaf Individuals By Hearing Persons: One Deaf Researcher’S Perspective, Michael S. Stinson

JADARA

This paper discusses four issues regarding the potential for research to be misguided when white, hearing persons, who are members of the majority culture, conduct investigations on members of two minority cultures, deaf and Asian-Pacific people. One potential danger is that researchers may draw conclusions that facilitate inappropriate stereotyping of deaf and Asian-Pacific persons. In addition, there are potential problems regarding credibility when researchers who are members of the majority culture write about individuals in a minority culture. Misguided work is less likely to occur when researchers who belong to the majority group are involved in the minority culture. However, …

The View From Within And Without: Conducting Research On Deaf Asian Americans, Tane C. Akamatsu Oct 2019

The View From Within And Without: Conducting Research On Deaf Asian Americans, Tane C. Akamatsu

JADARA

This paper is a reflection on the process of researching and writing about Deaf Asian Americans (Akamatsu, 1993; Fischgrund & Akamatsu,1993). As a hearing person, I have used both quantitative and qualitative methods to study issues of bilingual language development primarily in deaf populations. However, it was not until recently that I realized that much of what I knew about deafness was in relationship to white Deaf Americans, and that much of what I knew about Asian Americans was about hearing Asian Americans. Two questions are considered in this text

1. In what way does looking at a problem from …

Outsider In The Deaf World: Reflections Of An Ethnographic Researcher, Susan Foster Oct 2019

Outsider In The Deaf World: Reflections Of An Ethnographic Researcher, Susan Foster

JADARA

In this paper, the question of whether a hearing researcher can conduct research about the experiences and perspectives of deaf persons is examined. The author (a hearing researcher) argues that it is possible for hearing persons to do responsible and high quality research in the area of deafness, provided that steps are taken to include deaf persons in the design and/or review of the work. The author then describes the strategies she uses to insure that her work is not dominated by the hearing perspective.

Use Of The Children Of Alcoholics Screening Test With A Deaf Population, Steven Rich Oct 2019

Use Of The Children Of Alcoholics Screening Test With A Deaf Population, Steven Rich

JADARA

Thirty-four million Americans have one or both parents who could be classified as alcoholic. Research related to the effects of child rearing in alcoholic families has resulted in the identification of a common pattern of dysfunction in the family. This environment has been shown to place Children of Alcoholics into a high risk group for psychological, psychological, and sociological disorders. The Children of Alcoholics Screening Test is a 30 item scale that requires subjects to respond to their perceptions of, experience with, and reactions to, a parent(s) drinking and is designed to identify children, adolescents or adults of alcoholic parents. …

A Pilot Study Of The Eating/Dieting Behaviors And Attitudes Of College-Aged Women Who Are Hearing Impaired Vs. Their Hearing Peers, Melissa L. Fletcher Oct 2019

A Pilot Study Of The Eating/Dieting Behaviors And Attitudes Of College-Aged Women Who Are Hearing Impaired Vs. Their Hearing Peers, Melissa L. Fletcher

JADARA

Eating disorders have recently come into focus as a significant problem with college-aged women. Professional literature addresses eating disorders in several cultural minorities; however, women who are hearing-impaired have not been recognized as a group that may have significant issues with food. This preliminary study is a comparison of two groups of college-aged women (hearing and hearing-impaired), and their feelings about their bodies, dieting and eating. The survey tool is based on criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Revised-III, 1987, (SDMR-III) for eating disorder behavior, and also serves as a basis for larger scale study. The results indicated that …
