Surveillance And The Self: Understanding Privacy And Identity In Digital Environments, Alecea Ritter Standlee
Surveillance And The Self: Understanding Privacy And Identity In Digital Environments, Alecea Ritter Standlee
Friday Forum
The widespread use of internet enabled devices among contemporary US adults has given rise to a series of questions about issues of identity, privacy and group behaviors. The increasing use of algorithmic systems in social media and the attendant privacy concerns among users may also contribute to increased levels of strategic management of identity among users. In order to contribute to this discussion, this project examines perceptions and practices of privacy and self-representation in digital spaces among college age adults 18-24. This project utilizes semi-structured interview data collected with college students in the Eastern United States and focuses on both …
Kurds’ Plight A Result Of Failures All Around: An Elderly Mother’S Anguish Brings Home The Points About The Wisdom Of Canada’S Defence Spending, Erika Simpson
Political Science Publications
The article highlights the plight of the Kurds in Syria, exacerbated by Turkey's military offensive and the broader geopolitical failures surrounding the conflict. It criticizes the U.S. withdrawal from Syria, which enabled Turkey's attack on the Kurdish forces, formerly allies against ISIS. The article argues that NATO's inability to respond effectively due to its consensus rules has allowed potential genocide and ethnic cleansing by Turkey. It also critiques Canada's response, emphasizing the need for better investment in defense capabilities and peace support missions. The piece underscores the broader implications of these failures on international law and human rights, calling for …

Regionalism is defined in many ways. Some define it by regional tax sharing and consolidating local units of government into a larger city/county statutory governing arrangement that may encourage equity and efficiency. Notable examples of this include Indianapolis and its “Unigov” consolidation with many surrounding towns, municipalities; as well as the City of Nashville and Davidson County in Tennessee. Other consolidations are bilateral city-to-city policy setting arrangements, such as the Metro Council, that determine growth and development policy for the Twin Cities, Minneapolis-Saint Paul. This study proceeds on the belief that regionalism can also be defined in functional terms based …

Learning To Listen Up: Advocating For And Collaborating With Student Employees For A More Effective Workforce, Heidi Gauder, Heather Ruch, Cristin Bushnell
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Student employees are a vital part of this library’s workforce. Without them, it would be difficult to sustain the services we provide. Over the last few years, we have developed a more deliberate approach to student employee hiring and training, emphasizing their roles within the library mission and the value of their library jobs in preparation for the workforce. This process has taken time, mandatory training, good humor, and food. The work within public services really coalesced with the hiring of the student coordinator for public services. Tasked with uniting and supervising a workforce of 30, the coordinator commenced this …

Speak Up Through Video: Campus Collaboration For Effective Flipped Learning, Susan Franzen, Julie Derden
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Let’s face it, sometimes librarians repeat the same content over and over. Or we have to present information that students find uninteresting and difficult to understand. To make repetitive, challenging library information engaging and entertaining, two librarians collaborated with their campus television production team to create videos to flip library instruction for education and nursing majors. After sharing basic information with a team of creative production interns and their faculty advisor, both librarians were thrilled with the inventive, instructive videos produced. One video featured a game show of data and statistics for a public health nursing course. The second used …

Connecting Women: Wikipedia Editing In The Sciences, Ada Lovelace Day Edit-A-Thon 2019, Selena Bryant, Wendy Wilcox
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Cornell University hosted its inaugural Ada Lovelace Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in 2019. Led by two librarians, this event is a chance to highlight the contributions of women past in present in the Sciences. Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer and is a good example of the invisible contributions women have made in the field of the sciences. Participants learned how to edit in Wikipedia and both Cornell affiliates and people in the Ithaca community were welcome. We highlighted female-identified Cornell professors in the Sciences, https://guides.library.cornell.edu/adalovelace, with underdeveloped or no Wikipedia pages for real world examples as well.
The Changing Reference Landscape: An Assessment Of Mann Library's Combined Service Desk, Ryan Tolnay
The Changing Reference Landscape: An Assessment Of Mann Library's Combined Service Desk, Ryan Tolnay
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
This project examined and assessed reference services at Albert R. Mann Library following the creation of a combined service desk. I conducted a literature review and created a survey to determine what mode of research help patrons preferred. Survey respondents were fairly evenly split between their preferences and often stated the same reasons for their preference- convenience and accessibility. Recommendations include instituting a user experience team and training all access services employees on reference techniques and library resources. This will provide patrons with more accurate answers to their questions and continue to improve library services.

Applying Evidence-Based Research Principles In Review Design: Supporting Graduate And Faculty Research In The Life Sciences, Chris Fournier, Kate Ghezzi-Kopel
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
The reproducibility crisis in published scientific work is changing the way that research is designed and conducted. Librarians in academic institutions can play a key role in promoting improved adherence to evidence-based guidelines for performing literature reviews. The Cornell Systematic Review Team has developed a checklist, https://osf.io/2edg9/?pid=ezqpd, that can be used in research consultations as a conversation framework when assisting patrons with review design. This checklist is informed by widely accepted best practices for development of a sound systematic review protocol. Discussing this checklist with patrons promotes increased transparency, reduction of bias, and improved reproducibility of graduate student and …

A Team-Based Service Model: Mann Library, Cornell University, Erica M. Johns, Tobi Hines, Ashley Shea
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Mann Library began piloting a new team-based service model in August 2019 to replace the liaison model. By separating into teams of instruction or research support and removing departmental outreach from individual librarian responsibilities, Mann librarians have been able to prioritize their functional areas of expertise that were increasing in demand and devote more time to innovative new projects. We have begun our assessment of the new model which will continue through 2020, but we are also taking an iterative approach as we implement these changes, gathering feedback from staff and course correcting as necessary.

Graduate Students And Academic Integrity: What Is The Librarian's Role?, Roman Koshykar
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
As Graduate Services Coordinator at RIT, the presenter was asked to provide instruction on academic integrity to new graduate students for two consecutive Fall Semester Orientations. This presentation will compare and contrast academic integrity orientation activities delivered in the Fall 2018 Semester with those delivered in the Fall 2019 Semester. In the latter term, the RIT Office of Graduate Education placed a greater emphasis on academic integrity content and less emphasis on information about library resources and services, as compared with the former term, in their orientation program for new graduate students. This presentation will focus on the evolving role …

Dialogue Is A Bridge: Mapping Information Literacy, Social Justice, And Catholic Social Teaching, Desirae S. Zingarelli-Sweet, Elisa Slater Acosta
Librarian Publications & Presentations
In the spirit of what Pope Francis calls a “culture of encounter” created through dialogue, first we map points of convergence and potential friction between the ALA Core Values of Librarianship, themes of Catholic social teaching, and recent articulations in library literature of what social justice should mean for libraries. Second, we look at ways these differing sets of values can concretely inform how we think about and teach the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to our students.
- The attendee will leave this session with starting points for reconciling LIS values and social justice ideas with Catholic …

Family Environment Variables As Predictors Of School Absenteeism Severity At Multiple Levels: Ensemble And Classification And Regression Tree Analysis, Mirae J. Fornander, Christopher A. Kearney
Psychology Faculty Research
School attendance problems, including school absenteeism, are common to many students worldwide, and frameworks to better understand these heterogeneous students include multiple classes or tiers of intertwined risk factors as well as interventions. Recent studies have thus examined risk factors at varying levels of absenteeism severity to demarcate distinctions among these tiers. Prior studies in this regard have focused more on demographic and academic variables and less on family environment risk factors that are endemic to this population. The present study utilized ensemble and classification and regression tree analysis to identify potential family environment risk factors among youth (i.e., children …

Considering "Atmosphere" When Facilitating Information Seeking By People With Invisible Disabilities In Public Libraries, Rebecca Muir, Kim M. Thompson, Asim Qayyum
Faculty Publications
Twenty percent of Australians reported having a disability in 2015. Disability may occur at any time during the lifespan, however most disabilities are invisible. When a disability is invisible, or not immediately apparent to an outsider, individuals may need to self-identify to access inclusive services, or accommodation may never be offered at all.
When the perceived number of information seekers with a disability is low, information organisations may deem services unnecessary. Considering information access is a human right, information service providers and researchers need to seek low cost and low effort ways to facilitate information access and information seeking behaviors. …

Deafened Adults: Adjusting To A New World, Stephen J. Larew
JADARA
The task of assisting deafened adults in adapting to the loss of receptive communication, as well as the resulting social, psychological, and employment changes presents many challenges to professionals in the field of deafness. People who became deaf after the age of 18 years have to make adjustments to offset their loss of receptive communication skills. The process of learning to accept and cope with hearing loss involves many adjustments by the deafened individuals and significant people in their lives. Rehabilitation professionals need to have an understanding of the adjustments being faced by deafened individuals and be prepared to provide …

Counseling With Deaf Clients: The Need For Culturally And Linguistically Sensitive Interventions, Paul Freedman
JADARA
Many counselors and therapists who work with culturally Deaf clients have had the unfortunate experience of trying to use what they consider to be an appropriate intervention, only to see it elicit a response of silence and puzzlement from the client. At other times the clinician may become creative and use an intervention that seems to propel the session forward. Why is it that certain types of interventions tend to work better with Deaf clients? Why is it that some interventions seem inappropriate? Are there certain types of interventions that are best suited for use within a visual/gestural mode of …
Computerized Simulation Of Case Management With Deaf Clients: Tools For Instruction And Evaluation Of Information Gathering Strategies, Chris Reid, Fong Chan
Computerized Simulation Of Case Management With Deaf Clients: Tools For Instruction And Evaluation Of Information Gathering Strategies, Chris Reid, Fong Chan
JADARA
Many counselors and case managers working with individuals who are deaf have incomplete knowledge about the complex factors that affect case management, learning primarily through trail-and-error what information is really necessary to develop effective rehabilitation plans. Computer-based training using simulations of cases involving management of deaf individuals allows trainees to try out various strategies and receive expert feedback about “best practices” for the simulated cases without harming actual clients. A brief description of simulations currently utilized in rehabilitation training is presented, the development of a deafness-specific case is described and current training applications using that simulation are discussed. The development, …

Employees who have a hearing loss can use much of the same technology for telephone communication that is available for other employees in the workplace, eg., computers, electronic mail, fax, pagers, and cellular phones. Combining special deafness- related devices, strategies or services with these new technologies may allow employees who are deaf or severely hard of hearing to demonstrate their efficiency and productivity. The various telecommunication technology used by eight employees are described. Appendixes provide a listing of telecommunication equipment, strategies, and services useful for employees with a hearing loss, and educational resources used to hearing co-workers.
