Gifted Hard Of Hearing Persons, Mccay Vernon, Elizabeth Lafalce
JADARA
The intent of this study is to find out what happens in the lives of intellectually gifted hard of hearing persons relative to their careers, psychological adjustments, educations, and general life circumstances. The individuals studied all had IQs of 130 or above and suffered the onset of hearing loss in childhood or early adulthood. As such, they represent a unique group, different in many respects from those whose hearing loss occurred in later years (Vemon & Andrews,1990).
Self-Concept Among Deaf And Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, Matt J. Searls
Self-Concept Among Deaf And Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, Matt J. Searls
JADARA
This study compared a sample of hearing college students with a sample of deaf college students, all having deaf parents, on each of the nine dimensions of self-concept assessed through the revised form of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS). It addressed the question: Do the measured self-concepts of hearing children, reared by deaf parents, differ significantly from those of deaf children of deaf parents? Significant differences were found between TSCS mean scores for the deaf and hearing college students on the Behavior and Moral-Ethical Self scales. No differences resulted on the other six subscales or on the Total score of …
The Adaption Of Assessment Center Group Exercises For Deaf Job Applicants, Paul J. Berkay
The Adaption Of Assessment Center Group Exercises For Deaf Job Applicants, Paul J. Berkay
JADARA
This article proposes a model for adapting Assessment Center group exercises for deaf job candidates. A major Fortune 500 Corporation authorized the formation of an Exercise Adaptation Team with deaf professionals and deaf employees. The team's primary responsibility was to adapt an existing behavioral assessment group exercise for deaf job applicants who prefer to communicate in sign language. Four trials were conducted with this exercise using deaf subjects as assessment candidates. As a result of this research, several adaptations were made, including the use of lap top computers for assessor notetaking, the translation of excersise instructions into American Sign Language, …

Visual Motor Perception In Deaf Students, Marc S. Getz, Mccay Vernon
JADARA
This study was conducted to determine if certain types of neurological screening techniques demonstrate more sensitivity to the neurological differences existent among groups of deaf individuals with differing etiologies of hearing loss. The subjects consisted of 40 deaf volunteers, ranging in age from 16 to 20 years, selected on the basis of their etiology of deafness. The assignment of subjects yielded three in situ conditions: rubella, meningitis, and genetic. Subjects were administered the Bender Gestalt Test and the Trail Making Test to determine if significant differences exist among these groups in their performance on these neurological screening techniques. Results indicate …
Some Practical Considerations For Providing Access To The Postsecondary Environment, Alan T. Hurwitz, Sara Kersting
Some Practical Considerations For Providing Access To The Postsecondary Environment, Alan T. Hurwitz, Sara Kersting
JADARA
Whether initiating the design and development of new programs/or modifying existing programs/those who seek to support deaf/hard-of-hearing students in mainstreamed environments must carefully consider the nature and needs of both the academic environment and the student. Developing systems of support which are effective, cost-effective, and relevant to faculty and students requires dose examination of the broader questions of organization/ administration and resources/ as well as specific attention to details of classroom d3mamics and thoughtful analysis of students' academic/and personal-social needs.
Recognition of the interaction among these various elements is critical and suggests that efforts towards planning, development, and evaluation should …

Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge
Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge
JADARA
American Indians who are deaf may exhibit a complex mix of cultural characteristics common to Indian, Deaf, and hearing Anglo society. The pressures of living with multicultural identities and the conflicts of competing cultural influences can exacerbate the difficulty of dealing with personal stress. Counselors without training in cross-cultural interventions may be unaware of important cultural differences affecting the counseling relationship, particularly the elements of cultural identity that tend to be shared by Deaf and Indian people. This paper explores the comparative cultural values of Deaf people, Indian groups, and the hearing Anglo society. The goal is to identify potential …
