Attitudinal Changes Of Employers To Hearing Impaired Workers After Utilizing An Asl/Awareness Videotape: A Pilot Study, Sandy Silver Oct 2019

Attitudinal Changes Of Employers To Hearing Impaired Workers After Utilizing An Asl/Awareness Videotape: A Pilot Study, Sandy Silver

JADARA

Potential employers and staff of deaf/hard of hearing employers were surveyed focusing on their attitudes, knowledge and anxiety towards the hearing impaired. An instructional videotape was developed and presented focusing on work related American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and awareness issues. A pre- and post-test were administered to determine significant changes and perceived levels of comfort with regard to this population and employment. Results indicated that there was a significant improvement in attitudes after viewing the videotape. Additionally, there was a markedly positive indication regarding the hiring of hearing-impaired workers.

Techniques In Treating Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse: Problematic Areas In Their Application To The Deaf Population, Daniel B. Swartz Oct 2019

Techniques In Treating Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse: Problematic Areas In Their Application To The Deaf Population, Daniel B. Swartz

JADARA

Problems exist in identifying and treating deaf "survivors" of child sexual abuse. Even when they are identified, there are problems in effectively applying existing regimens of therapy to this special population. While main streaming the deaf person into society seems to be the wave of the future, and there are positive aspects to this, careful consideration, respect, and acknowledgement must be given to the special culture of the deaf person. Employing existing therapeutic methods, with only the adjustment of supplying an interpreter for the Deaf, may not be enough.

Providing Support Services For A Deaf-Blind Student In A Mainstream University Environment, Eugene A. Bourquin Oct 2019

Providing Support Services For A Deaf-Blind Student In A Mainstream University Environment, Eugene A. Bourquin

JADARA

Today, deaf-blind individuals can and do pursue higher education. A deaf-blind student presents unique challenges for the traditional support facility, even when they may have a history of service to deaf and/or blind students. Additional considerations are presented for an academic institution when coordinating services, using technologies, and addressing special needs for a deaf-blind student. By examining the experience of New York University with a deaf-blind student, related issues can be explored; coordination of dual services, early planning, and cross-departmental cooperation are necessary to succeed in providing the required support and allowing the student to fulfil educational requirements and goals. …

Acculturative Stress: A Useful Framework For Understanding The Experience Of Deaf Americans, Robert G. Brubaker Oct 2019

Acculturative Stress: A Useful Framework For Understanding The Experience Of Deaf Americans, Robert G. Brubaker

JADARA

Acculturative stress is a pattern of responses individuals may experience when they come into contact with a culture other than their own. This paper explores the possibility that Deaf Americans experience acculturative stress as a consequence of their contact with hearing people. The components of a theoretical model of acculturative stress are presented along with a review of relevant research. The potential utility of the model for generating research and developing interventions is discussed.

Can A New Layer Of Leadership Save Sectarian Practice? A Decentralized Denomination’S Experiment With A Central Committee, Cory Anderson Oct 2019

Can A New Layer Of Leadership Save Sectarian Practice? A Decentralized Denomination’S Experiment With A Central Committee, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The Beachy Amish-Mennonite bishop committee was established at the 1991 annual ministers’ meeting as a conservative response to uncertainty about religious practices across the denomination. The committee was tasked with developing 18 concerns from the meeting into a denomination-wide standard of practice. While majority support was forthcoming for this statement, leadership from some influential, moderate congregations worked against the committee for two reasons. First, the congregation’s leaders wanted a think tank-style advisory committee, not a committee that made and enforced regulations. Second, these congregations feared being ousted due to eventually falling out of conformity. Due to this opposition, the committee …

The Changing Sociolinguistic Identities Of The Beachy Amish-Mennonites, Joshua Brown Oct 2019

The Changing Sociolinguistic Identities Of The Beachy Amish-Mennonites, Joshua Brown

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The study of Beachy Amish-Mennonite identities is a complex endeavor. As a loosely-organized fellowship, the Beachys have no overarching governing body that dictates symbols of their Anabaptist commitment to nonconformity. Often Beachys are described as existing on a religious continuum between the Old Order Amish and Mennonites, yet defining Beachys as what they are not does not adequately establish the religious identities that Beachys negotiate for themselves. This article addresses the negotiation of sociolinguistic identities—where language and religious identities intersect—alongside cultural change for two Beachy congregations in Central Pennsylvania. The analysis, based on a theoretical framework of the negotiation of …

Dutchified English In An Ohio Beachy Amish-Mennonite Community, Lara Downing Oct 2019

Dutchified English In An Ohio Beachy Amish-Mennonite Community, Lara Downing

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

This article compares the English spoken by Beachy Amish-Mennonites just outside the Holmes County, OH, plain community with the English of non-plain neighbors. Although there is no previous linguistic research about the Beachys in this region, previous research on the dialects of English spoken by Amish communities suggests that differences from regional standards are influenced by deliberate border maintenance, primacy of language in expressing ethnic identity, and interference from Pennsylvania German, known to speakers as “Dutchified English.” However, little research has examined the English of the Beachys, who, compared to the Amish, occupy a less conservative position between separation from …

The Economic Integration Of Mexican Mennonite Immigrants In Canada, Marina Wiebe Oct 2019

The Economic Integration Of Mexican Mennonite Immigrants In Canada, Marina Wiebe

MA Research Paper

With a rapidly shrinking proportion of Canadians that live in rural areas, there have been some attempts to settle immigrants in rural communities. With few exceptions, these attempts in Canada have been unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the Mennonite people are considered to be a population that maintains their retention in rural areas with some success. The literature regarding this specific immigrant group is limited and lacks context of the economic environment of Canada today. It is in the interest of government policy to have a working and current understanding of Mennonites’ economic outcomes and retention in rural communities. The integration patterns of …

An App A Day Keeps The Doctor Away: A Visual Case Analysis Of The Self-Optimization Ideologies Downloaded Onto Apple Users As They Download Applications, Ismahan Yusuf Oct 2019

An App A Day Keeps The Doctor Away: A Visual Case Analysis Of The Self-Optimization Ideologies Downloaded Onto Apple Users As They Download Applications, Ismahan Yusuf

MA Research Paper

This visually thematic qualitative case analysis seeks to advance cyber-sociology by analyzing the hyper-under-attended relationship between interfaces and discourses. Here, the interface under investigation is the Apple App Store, examined for the ways in which the platform is discursively encoded with particular ideologies, ideals, desires and narratives downloaded onto users as they download applications. Such is explored via a two-part research question inquiring: Which type of applications enjoy the most promotion on the Apple App Store and what cyber-architectural tools are herein used to optically exalt them? To investigate this, an iOS 11-operating iPhone was used to frequent the store’s …

Using Technology To Reduce The Burden Of Paperwork: Preliminary Lessons Learned From The Qic -Wd Virginia Site, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) partnered with the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) in 2017 to conduct research examining the efficacy of technology interventions aimed at reducing child welfare staff turnover and improving child welfare outcomes. Virginia is a state-supervised, countyadministered child welfare system. The state elected to study the implementation of and outcomes from job modernization technology interventions in 18 localities. These 18 localities represent a workforce of approximately 450 of the state’s 2,200 frontline staff. The intervention is occurring in multiple phases: (1) transcription services; (2) a mobility technology application; and (3) a Comprehensive …

Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green Oct 2019

Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Over the last decade, many academic libraries have added a discovery layer to their integrated library systems (ILS) in an effort to improve access to information and streamline the users’ search experience. The Willard J. Houghton Library, a small academic library at Houghton College, recently migrated to WMS Discovery and implemented such a discovery layer into its OPAC, along with many other related changes to both the library’s backend and “onstage” functions. Naturally, any ILS migration will cause a variety of changes (and headaches!) for a library, its staff, and its users, but in this case these changes were complicated …

Crises In The Aquatic Profession, Robert Keig Stallman Oct 2019

Crises In The Aquatic Profession, Robert Keig Stallman

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In this paper, I propose there are several crises in the aquatic profession and I explain what they are and how to address them using research and my own observations. I use an innovative questioning process to do this by asking you the reader a series of questions after which I explain each. The first crisis has to do with the quantity of trained swimming instructors relative to the population that they serve. In many western European and North American high income countries (HICs), the teacher:student ratios are declining and it is getting increasingly difficult to hire trained swim instructors. …

The Anchor, Volume 133.02: October 18, 2019, Hope College

The Anchor: 2019

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
