Ethical Issues For Hearing Professionals Working With Deaf Individuals, Debra Guthmann
Ethical Issues For Hearing Professionals Working With Deaf Individuals, Debra Guthmann
JADARA
This paper addresses the issue of working in an environment that often is closely related to the relatively small deaf cultural community, and the difficulties of maintaining a professional atmosphere in such situations. Ethical issues of confidentiality, objectivity, and freedom of choice are discussed in depth. The paper should be helpful to professionals entering the field of deafness who are in positions where these ethical issues may be challenged
School-To-Work Transitions For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students In America, Bobbie Gale Bonds
School-To-Work Transitions For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students In America, Bobbie Gale Bonds

Transition from school into the world of work can be difficult. Literacy, communication, and technology skills must be well-developed to enter and remain on the job. Strong school preparation opportunities can help ease the transition. In 1994, as part of the national movement for educational reform. Congress passed the School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA), which recognized the importance of including every student from kindergarten through grade 12, with special focus on the needs of women, minorities, and disabled individuals. The Act, linked with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requires that educational programs develop school to work (STW) transition plans …

A substantial knowledge base exists regarding the social-cognitive and behavioral correlates of aggression among hearing children; however, less is known regarding these relationships among deaf children. Among aggressive hearing children, social-cognitive deficits result in poor social problem solving and increased aggressive behavior. Among aggressive deaf children, both poor social problem solving and communication difficulties are thought to lead to aggressive behavior. The Coping Power Program has demonstrated effectiveness as an intervention for aggressive hearing children. This year-long multicomponent program was adapted for use with deaf children and included both child groups and teacher and dormitory staff consultation. Study participants were …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rates of closure success (i.e., status 26) and level of income (i.e., weekly earnings at closure) for consumers with hearing loss (i.e., deaf and hard-of-hearing) and consumers with other disabilities. A random sample of case records (N=34,911) obtained from the RSA 911 database for fiscal year 1997 was evaluated. A series of logistic and multiple linear regression analysis, chi-square analysis, and t-tests were utilized to investigate potential relationships. Results indicated that consumers with hearing loss achieved closure success more often, and possessed higher levels of income when compared to consumers with …

English Language Literacy Development In Deaf Individuals: The Role Of Environmental Factors, Brooke Harding, Mark W. Tanner

Learning to read and write plays a significant role in children's linguistic and cognitive development. However, prelingually deaf children born into hearing families face immense linguistic, social, and emotional obstacles in the acquisition of reading and writing skills (Swisher,1989). This research was carried out to gain first hand information on the nature of literacy acquisition by deaf individuals. A case study approach was employed in order to investigate factors contributing to two prelingually deaf adults' acquisition of literacy in English. Findings from this study showed the significance of the home and school settings as learning environments which either enhanced or …
