Gender Differences In Social Media Use And Cyberbullying In Belize: A Preliminary Report, Grace Mariko Kasahara, Daniel Houlihan, Collin Estrada

Psychology Department Publications

Cyberbullying is a global issue that usually occurs with increased social media usage. A number of studies have found significant gender differences in social media use and cyberbullying, although gender differences are not consistent across studies. Despite the increase in access to cellphones and Internet in Belize, no studies have investigated how adolescents are using these resources. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences involving how adolescents in Belize are using social media and if cyberbullying is a problem. Results provide preliminary information about social media use and cyberbullying in Belize. It indicates that gender differences exist …

Just A Chemical Imbalance: Exploring The Absence Of The Social Etiology Of Depression In Common Medical Websites, Zoe Folsom Jan 2019

Just A Chemical Imbalance: Exploring The Absence Of The Social Etiology Of Depression In Common Medical Websites, Zoe Folsom

Conspectus Borealis

In recent decades, depression has received increased attention in the United States. As diagnosed instances of depression rise, and as it has usurped all other conditions in both national and global disability costs, pressure continues to mount to address and mitigate the societal impacts of this seemingly unstoppable disease. While this has taken various forms, from campaigns to destigmatize mental illness to government entities devoting to reducing social costs of depression, the prevailing narrative proves incomplete. Despite a wealth of research supporting a direct link between social factors (such as life satisfaction and relational satisfaction) and instances of clinical depression, …

Estimation Of Multivariate Asset Models With Jumps, Angela Loregian, Laura Ballotta, Gianluca Gianluca Fusai, Marcos Fabricio Perez Jan 2019

Estimation Of Multivariate Asset Models With Jumps, Angela Loregian, Laura Ballotta, Gianluca Gianluca Fusai, Marcos Fabricio Perez

Business Faculty Publications

We propose a consistent and computationally efficient two-step methodology for the estimation of multidimensional non-Gaussian asset models built using Levy processes. The proposed framework allows for dependence between assets and different tail behaviors and jump structures for each asset. Our procedure can be applied to portfolios with a large number of assets as it is immune to estimation dimensionality problems. Simulations show good finite sample properties and significant efficiency gains. This method is especially relevant for risk management purposes such as, for example, the computation of portfolio Value at Risk and intra-horizon Value at Risk, as we show in detail …

Employment Disparity Grows For Rural Americans With Disability, Rtc: Rural, University Of Montana Rural Institute Jan 2019

Employment Disparity Grows For Rural Americans With Disability, Rtc: Rural, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Employment rates have increased since the recession, but these gains haven’t reached all communities across the country, nor has everyone benefited from these gains. While overall employment rates have improved, employment for people with disabilities in rural areas has decreased. This fact sheet uses the recently released (December 2018) American Community Survey 5-year estimates to explore changes in employment rates for people with and without disabilities across the nine divisions of the United States, and for metropolitan, micropolitan, and non-core counties. This marks the first time longitudinal trends in ACS data can be explored across the rural-urban continuum using comparable …

The Visual Word Form Area (Vwfa) Is Part Of Both Language And Attention Circuitry, Lang Chen, Demian Wassermann, Daniel A. Abrams, John Kochalka, Guillermo Gallardo-Diez, Vinod Menon Jan 2019

The Visual Word Form Area (Vwfa) Is Part Of Both Language And Attention Circuitry, Lang Chen, Demian Wassermann, Daniel A. Abrams, John Kochalka, Guillermo Gallardo-Diez, Vinod Menon

Psychology

While predominant models of visual word form area (VWFA) function argue for its specific role in decoding written language, other accounts propose a more general role of VWFA in complex visual processing. However, a comprehensive examination of structural and functional VWFA circuits and their relationship to behavior has been missing. Here, using high-resolution multimodal imaging data from a large Human Connectome Project cohort (N = 313), we demonstrate robust patterns of VWFA connectivity with both canonical language and attentional networks. Brain-behavior relationships revealed a striking pattern of double dissociation: structural connectivity of VWFA with lateral temporal language network predicted language, …

Relational Inquiry: Seven-Years Practicing Seven Relationships, Gregg Lahood Jan 2019

Relational Inquiry: Seven-Years Practicing Seven Relationships, Gregg Lahood

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Greetings from Byron Bay—what follows is a postcard version of a seven-year cycle of relational inquiry retrospectively nicknamed The Rainbow of Desire. I outline our practices, explore five basic fields in our approach to new paradigm research, and present an updated version of my seven relationships model as a heuristic for understanding and participating in relational inquiry. As a contemporary spiritual expression, with roots in the Greek-Socratic tradition of research, and informed by Gestalt practice (not psychotherapy), this account may also be of value for persons interested in further Gestalt-transpersonal inquiry, research, and learning.

A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh Jan 2019

A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh

Dissertations

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the lived experience of five ex-offenders who have not offended for a minimum period of ten years. How, and why, these individuals have maintained their crime free status shall be explored in detail in an attempt to understand the causal process that permits successful long term desistance from crime. Furthermore the desisting ex-offenders in this study are also ex-drug addicts. Exactly how criminal offending and drug addiction interacted in the past lives of the people is documented, as is the impossibility of abstaining from one of these behaviours only. This necessitates …

How Do Social Care Managers In Disability Services Experience Regulation And Inspection?, Deirdre Connolly Jan 2019

How Do Social Care Managers In Disability Services Experience Regulation And Inspection?, Deirdre Connolly

Dissertations

Regulation is one of the ways in which the State seeks to ensure that health and social care services are safe for those that are using them. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) is the regulatory body in Ireland charged by the State to assure the public that these services are safe. This study set out to understand how social care managers, in the role of person in charge (PIC) of residential services for adults with disabilities, experience HIQA’s regulatory process and to explore how these experiences impact on social care managers, and on service improvement more generally.

Mothering The Aggressive Child, Katja Ermann Jan 2019

Mothering The Aggressive Child, Katja Ermann

PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Dissertations (Seattle)

This qualitative study explores the experience of mothers parenting significantly aggressive children, ages five to 10. Little has been known previously about how women experience this aggression or the social and psychological impacts it has on them. This dissertation highlights the women’s understandings to provide a solid basis for theoretical explication using a Constructivist Ground Theory approach. Significant findings include the invisibility and stigma the women feel and the ways in which the experience is similar and dissimilar to other forms of family violence, particularly adolescent-on-parent violence (APV). Differences were found in social stigma between women whose child has a …

Preparing Equitable And Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Kimberly Hartung, Tracy Lynn Reimer Jan 2019

Preparing Equitable And Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Kimberly Hartung, Tracy Lynn Reimer

Graduate School Faculty Publications

Equitable school leadership is intentional; it requires learning, listening, action, and reflection. This study explored how two school administrator preparation programs, focused on culturally responsive instructional leadership and critical self-awareness, promote and foster equitable leadership. With the aim of preparing leaders for a complex and pluralistic society, this study probed which aspects of the programs contributed to leadership successes and program adjustments that would better address the challenges novice leaders face. Interviews were conducted with recent graduates new to their leadership roles. Opportunities for authentic application of knowledge promoting leadership for educational equity and cultural responsiveness was identified as most …

A Mixed Method Evaluation Of A Culturally Adapted, Brief, Bullying Bystander Intervention For Middle School Students, Molly Moran, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas, Sherise Porchia, Steve Moody

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this mixed method study was to examine the appropriateness of a brief, bullying bystander intervention (STAC) adapted for a middle school in a low-income, rural community with a predominantly White and Hispanic student body. We were also interested in understanding the experiences of the students who participated in the intervention. Quantitative analysis suggested that students gained knowledge about bullying, increased their confidence to intervene in bullying situations, and used the STAC strategies to intervene in bullying behavior. Analyzing the qualitative data using Consensual Qualitative Research methodology ([CQR] Hill et al.) revealed four domains in which students (a) …

The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh Jan 2019

The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh

International Journal of Peace Studies

The enormity of the world’s dislocated population generated by contemporary conflicts has brought significant attention to a complicated process of returning housing, land and property (HLP) to their rightful occupants once conditions permit. As the complexity of large-scale HLP restitution becomes increasingly apparent, significant obstacles emerge that require examination. This article describes how the ‘evidentiary bind’ is such an obstacle. This bind emerges when large-scale HLP restitution processes require titles and deeds to be in the possession of the population who are the least likely to have them—the forcibly displaced. The technical, legal and political inability to acknowledge and accept …

A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Islander Creole Rhotics, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos Jan 2019

A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Islander Creole Rhotics, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

World Languages & Cultures Department Publications

This study uses a combination of phonetic predictors and sociolinguistic factors to examine the variable production of rhotics in an English-based Creole in the Island of Old Providence, Colombia. Speech data were collected from five informants by means of sociolinguistic interviews and other-speech elicitation tasks, while 328 Praat-annotated tokens were extracted from a transcribed corpus of approximately 5,700 words. Rhotic production was examined according to several acoustic correlates (i.e., formant frequencies and segmental duration) and linguistic (i.e., word position and stress) and social (i.e., sex) factors. Formant frequencies in the form of F3 and F2 revealed a post-alveolar production, while …

The researcher developed a pretest and posttest using the goals and objectives of metaliteracy to assess students’ …

Implementing Educational Courses On Social Media Within Prisons To Decrease Unemployment Rates Among Ex-Prisoners And Reduce Recidivism In The United States, Shannon Hernandez Jan 2019

Implementing Educational Courses On Social Media Within Prisons To Decrease Unemployment Rates Among Ex-Prisoners And Reduce Recidivism In The United States, Shannon Hernandez

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper focuses on whether or not it would be beneficial to implement educational courses on social media within prisons in order to prepare prisoners for release, improve post-release unemployment rates, and improve recidivism rates in the United States. Since the early 1990s, technology has grown to a point where it has become a part of everyone’s daily life, which includes social media platforms (Greenstein, 2012). While society has adapted to these advancements, prisoners who have been removed from society for many years are unable to achieve the same levels of social media comprehension, which can cause disparity between their …

Creating The Best: A Two-Prong Policy Approach To Improve The Quality Of Future Certified Ohio Peace Officers, Amy English

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This qualitative client applied study explained and explored a two-fold approach that could be used to implement policy changes that will aid small Ohio police departments in commissioning intellectually developed and psychologically suited individuals for employment in law enforcement. Several issues needed to be addressed in order to accomplish these policy changes. Criminological theories were correlated to deviant behaviors of criminally charged Ohio police officers. Past legislated police reform acts were addressed. Past studies of police officer higher education were analyzed. Finally, the implementation factors for psychological evaluations as a police academy pre-enrollment requirement were identified. This study, based on …

Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler Jan 2019

Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Drug abuse is an ever-growing problem in the United States and in other parts of the world. The Appalachian region is one of the areas hit hardest by this epidemic. Since 2000, the number of overdose deaths in Appalachia has steadily risen while state and city governments analyze the potential causes for such a widespread issue. Many economic and medical explanations have been suggested, but it is also imperative to examine the cultural belief systems that might play a role in the persistent drug use. This study looks at the influence traditional Appalachian gender roles have on female drug users. …

Leveraging Environmental Reserve Assets To Achieve A Sustainable Environment, Tamim Ephrem Akiki Jan 2019

Leveraging Environmental Reserve Assets To Achieve A Sustainable Environment, Tamim Ephrem Akiki

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy

This paper proposes a financing mechanism that seeks to realize massive projected returns associated with holding global warming at below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The IMF and national authorities of every participating country design 20-year Structural Environmental Adjustment Plans (SEAPs) that include preservation targets, emissions reductions, and investment budgets. Those budgets can either be self-financed or, where need is demonstrated, funded by the IMF using zero-interest loans that fully amortize through environmental outcomes. Maximum funding capacity is measured using Special Environmental Drawing Rights (SEDRs), an indefinite potential claim on the IMF’s freely usable currencies for climate finance regardless of future …

A Keynesian Exploration Of The Determinants Of Government Bond Yields For Brazil, Colombia, And Mexico, Simon Simoski Jan 2019

A Keynesian Exploration Of The Determinants Of Government Bond Yields For Brazil, Colombia, And Mexico, Simon Simoski

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy

This dissertation investigates the long-term determinants of the government bond nominal yields of Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. It deploys vector error correction (VEC) model to assess whether John Maynard Keynes’s view that the central bank’s actions, mainly through short-term interest rates and various monetary policy measures, are the key drivers of long-term government bond yields over the long-run, after controlling for key economic variables such as the inflation rate, GDP growth rate, and government debt- and deficit-to-GDP ratios. The results from the models estimated indicate that short-term interest rates are the main drivers of longterm government bond yields for all …

A Needs Assessment Of Providers For The Integration Of Behavioral Health Services At A Safety-Net Clinic, Anna Kathryn Hayburn

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The availability of behavioral health services within primary care meets the high patient need for mental health care within a familiar setting, which is especially impactful in safety-net settings where patients face higher levels of stress and psychosocial barriers that impact health outcomes (Kamimura et al., 2014). Behavioral health consultants (BHCs) may encounter challenges to successful integration of services, but adapting to the unique clinic environment, assessing needs, and facilitating effect collaboration with providers can lead to greater success (Hunter, Goodie, Oordt, & Dobmeyer, 2017). A needs assessment was conducted with volunteer providers at the safety-net clinic Reach Out of …

Linking Moral Identity With Moral Emotions: A Meta-Analysis, Tobias Krettenauer, Jean Paul Lefebvre Jan 2019

Linking Moral Identity With Moral Emotions: A Meta-Analysis, Tobias Krettenauer, Jean Paul Lefebvre

Psychology Faculty Publications

This meta-analysis examined the relationship between moral identity and moral emotions drawing on 57 independent studies. Moral identity was significantly associated with moral emotions, r = .32, p < .01, 95% CI [.27, .36]. Effect sizes were moderated by the type of moral emotion. Studies reporting other-regarding emotions (sympathy, empathy, compassion) had the largest effect sizes (r = .41), while negative other-evaluative emotions (moral anger, contempt, disgust) had the smallest (r = .16). Self-evaluative and other-evaluative positive emotions had intermediate effect sizes (rs between .29 and .32). The type of emotion measure also was a significant moderator, with trait measures of emotion (r = .38) correlating more strongly with moral identity than state measures (r = .24). Effect sizes did not differ for …

Moral Identity In Cultural Context: Differences Between Canadian And Chinese University Students, Fanli Jia, Tobias Krettenauer, Lihong Li Jan 2019

Moral Identity In Cultural Context: Differences Between Canadian And Chinese University Students, Fanli Jia, Tobias Krettenauer, Lihong Li

Psychology Faculty Publications

Albeit the moral identity construct has gained a pivotal status in moral psychology, previous research largely neglected cultural differences. The present study investigated moral identity from a cross-cultural perspective by comparing Western (Canadian) and Eastern (Chinese) cultures in three different contexts: family, school, and community/society. The sample included 185 young adults from Canada and 148 from China. A modified version of the moral identity interview (Krettenauer, Murua, & Jia, 2016) was administrated in each culture. All participants were asked to select 12-15 moral attributes describing a high moral person from a culturally inclusive list. They were then asked to rate …

The model examines the implications of a corruption ranking along with health and macroeconomic data that is strongly correlated with decreasing or increasing returns to scale.

Athletes' Openness To Sexuality, Tereza Melicharkova Jan 2019

Athletes' Openness To Sexuality, Tereza Melicharkova

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

There are several studies that suggest a biological indicator linked to homosexuality among men (see for example, LeVay & Hamer, 1994); however, such a finding is lacking among women. The studies that were focused on homosexuality among women were focused only on the prevailing stereotypes (Blinde & Taub, 1992; Knight & Giuliano, 2003; Mereish & Poteat, 2015; Morandini Blaszczynski, Costa, Godwin, & Dar-Nimrod, 2017). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out whether the proportion of lesbians among athletes does differ from the general population and if there is any difference between individual sports and team sports. Several …
