Art and creativity are at the core of VCU’s identity and culture. ONE VCU Art envisions a vibrant and diverse public art landscape on the VCU campuses that equals VCU’s national reputation and enhances connections with our urban home of Richmond. VCU’s nationally ranked arts programs as well as its relationship with the city of Richmond allow for opportunity to revive efforts to enhance current and future public art on the two Richmond campuses. This is in conjunction with the goals and priorities set out by the VCU strategic plan, Quest 2025: Together We Transform.

The Best Of Both Skills: U.S. Immigration, Work Visas, And Local Labor Shortages In Missouri, Adriano Udani Jan 2019

The Best Of Both Skills: U.S. Immigration, Work Visas, And Local Labor Shortages In Missouri, Adriano Udani

Center for Applied Economics

In spite of political rhetoric condemning immigrants’ contributions to the United States, scholars have persistently demonstrated positive social and economic contributions of immigrants. Studies such as these pose important policy implications for Missouri. To what extent does immigration contribute to recent Missouri economic outcomes? How are immigrant workers distributed across Missouri? Are there positive economic outcomes associated only with immigration of high-skilled workers? My analysis shows that higher per capita personal income and higher employment in certain industrial sectors are not solely attributed to high-skill workers. The results here suggest that economic productivity in Missouri is attributed to having a …

The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford Jan 2019

The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined teachers' understanding of risk factors and characteristics of potential perpetrators of school shootings, as well as the steps to take when they are identified in students. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding self efficacy and open-ended questions regarding school violence experiences. A mixed methods analysis revealed three primary conclusions. First, teachers have high levels of self-efficacy regarding the importance of and ability to deal effectively with troubled students. This conclusion suggests that teachers do internalize the relevance of this issue to them. Second, this study revealed a gap in terms of the …

Théâtre, Création Et Psychanalyse : Autour D’Une Mise En Scène De Premier Amour De Beckett, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

The Roots Of Community: A Local Librarian's Resource For Discovering, Documenting And Sharing The History Of Library Services To African Americans In Their Communities, Matthew R. Griffis Jan 2019

The Roots Of Community: A Local Librarian's Resource For Discovering, Documenting And Sharing The History Of Library Services To African Americans In Their Communities, Matthew R. Griffis

Publications and Other Resources

Intended for current library professionals, this toolkit provides a theoretical basis for completing public history projects about libraries and explores specific project types, selected best practices and related resources. It divides into three major sections: Part 1, “Planning,” Part 2 “Gathering” and Part 3, “Sharing.” Respectively, these sections cover the preparation, collection and communication tasks of research projects and, where appropriate, offer readers several types of potentially useful resources. Many of these resources—forms, letters, standards, examples of evidence—were used for the author’s Roots of Community project and appear as examples of resources deemed suitable for that project. In other instances, …

The Role Of Risk Tolerance In Publics’ Health Risk Perception And Responses, Hyoyeun Jun, Yen-I Lee Jan 2019

The Role Of Risk Tolerance In Publics’ Health Risk Perception And Responses, Hyoyeun Jun, Yen-I Lee

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

To better understand how uncertainty influences publics’ risk perception and responses, this study introduced risk tolerance as a new concept to public relations literature and then investigated how publics react to health risks with different temporal distances: climate change and foodborne illness. Through an online survey, this study found out that uncertainty, induced by risk temporal distance, leads to varied risk tolerance, which subsequently influences where and how people seek and share risk information.

Priming The Pump: Does Providing Information Before A Crisis Communications Simulation Provide A Better Learning Experience?, Matt Tidwell Jan 2019

Priming The Pump: Does Providing Information Before A Crisis Communications Simulation Provide A Better Learning Experience?, Matt Tidwell

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Many crisis communications educators use simulations as a means for students to test their learning in a controlled environment meant to simulate a real-life crisis using an (often hypothetical) organization. This project explores whether providing background and historical information about the organization days or weeks in advance of the simulation can enhance learning. Survey results of students exposed to this method as well as a traditional scenario approach (where all information is provided at once) showed that students preferred the advanced exposure method. The learning experience was judged to be superior overall. In addition, the recognition of understanding risks as …

Understanding Flu Vaccination Acceptance Among U.S. Adults: The Health Belief Model And Media Sources, Tong Xie, Connor Grady, Michael Cacciatore, Glen Nowak

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Based on previous studies about the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the reinforcing relationship between media selectivity or preference and individual’s behavior, this study used a national representative adult sample to assess flu vaccination as the result of an appraisal of relevant health beliefs, trust towards the authoritative entities (e.g. CDC & FDA) and vaccine-related media information, in addition to one’s existing behavior pattern. Results showed that not-vaccinated individuals differ significantly in their vaccine-related health believes and the trust towards the authoritative information sources. This group acquired less recommendation from health care providers and more negative sentiments about flu vaccine …

Secondary Crisis Communication. A Question Of Actual Or Perceived Credibility?, Bengt Johansson Jan 2019

Secondary Crisis Communication. A Question Of Actual Or Perceived Credibility?, Bengt Johansson

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

An important aspect of crisis communication is secondary crisis communication, which focuses on how people communicate during a crisis. This study seeks to explore the mechanism of credibility in secondary crisis communication. Respondents in a large-scale experiment (N=2382) were exposed to a fictional news story about a terrorist attack and asked to what degree they would share the news story on social media. The design made it possible to test if the sharing of news stories was determined by its actual credibility (through the use of semiotic disclaimers in the news story), or by perceived credibility (the perceived credibility of …

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This study examines the role of traditional versus new media’s impact on citizens’ perceptions of risk within elder care. We analyzed survey data from 112 Slovak citizens regarding their social network activity and perceptions of corruption, ageism, and health disparities in the Slovak elder care system. Previous research (Lukacovic, Sellnow-Richmond, & Durechova, under contract) identified three prominent sociopolitical issues present in the Slovak medical system among Slovak UGC discourse regarding Slovak healthcare inequity: corruption, threats to dignity, and discrimination. Here, we examined the extent to which social media users perceive the prevalence and subsequent risk of experiencing health disparities within …

Observed Mesoscale Hydroclimate Variability Of North America’S Allegheny Mountains At 40.2° N, Evan Kutta, Jason Hubbart Jan 2019

Observed Mesoscale Hydroclimate Variability Of North America’S Allegheny Mountains At 40.2° N, Evan Kutta, Jason Hubbart

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Spatial hydroclimatic variability of Eastern North America’s Allegheny Mountain System (AMS) is commonly oversimplified to elevation differences and the rain-shadow effect. Descriptive and higher order statistical properties of hourly meteorological observations (1948–2017) from seven airports were analyzed to better understand AMS climatic complexity. Airports were located along a longitudinal transect (40.2 °N) and observation infrastructure was positioned to minimize climatic gradients associated with insolation, slope, and aspect. Results indicated average ambient temperature was well correlated with airport elevation (R2 = 0.97). However, elevation was relatively poorly correlated to dew point temperature (R2 = 0.80) and vapor pressure deficit (R2 = …

Phase-Specific Changes In Rate Of Force Development And Muscle Morphology Throughout A Block Periodized Training Cycle In Weightlifters, Dylan G. Suarez, Satoshi Mizuguchi, William Guy Hornsby, Aaron J. Cunanan, Donald J. Marsh, Michael H. Stone

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinetic and morphological adaptations that occur during distinct phases of a block periodized training cycle in weightlifters. Athlete monitoring data from nine experienced collegiate weightlifters was used. Isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) and ultrasonography (US) results were compared to examine the effects of three specific phases of a training cycle leading up to a competition. During the high volume strength-endurance phase (SE) small depressions in rate of force development (RFD) but statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) increases in vastus lateralis cross-sectional area (CSA), and body mass (BM) were observed. The lower volume …

Willingness To Pay For Wind Versus Natural Gas Generation Of Electricity, Kofi Nkansah, Alan R. Collins Jan 2019

Willingness To Pay For Wind Versus Natural Gas Generation Of Electricity, Kofi Nkansah, Alan R. Collins

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In 2009, West Virginia enacted an Alternative and Renewable Portfolio Act (APRA) to broaden its energy use for electricity beyond coal. A choice experiment survey was conducted to assess West Virginians’ willingness to pay (WTP) for 10 percent of electricity generated from wind energy versus natural gas. Results showed that residential consumers preferred electricity generated from wind, with annual per-capita WTP averaging from $19.25 to $26.75. Given the subsequent repeal of the APRA in 2015, we propose implementation of a voluntary green pricing program as an alternative policy to increase the share of renewable energy in West Virginia's energy portfolio.

Segmentation Of Nature-Based Tourists In A Rural Area (2008–2009): A Single-Item Approach, Jinyang Deng, Jian Li Jan 2019

Segmentation Of Nature-Based Tourists In A Rural Area (2008–2009): A Single-Item Approach, Jinyang Deng, Jian Li

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Although much research on nature-based tourism (NBT) has been conducted in natural areas, such as national parks and other protected areas, studies on NBT in rural areas have been limited. Moreover, few NBT studies, if any, have examined the impact of seasons and/or locations on visitors’ perceptions of NBT. This comes as little surprise, given that naturalness, the fundamental core of NBT, is likely to vary with seasons and locations. To this end, this study examines NBT in a rural area in the Appalachian Region, USA, with a focus on market segmentation, based on data collected from a four-season on-site …

Assessing And Mapping Forest Landscape Quality In China, Jiangzhou Wu, Yongde Zhong, Jinyang Deng Jan 2019

Assessing And Mapping Forest Landscape Quality In China, Jiangzhou Wu, Yongde Zhong, Jinyang Deng

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Forest landscape plays a critical role in the resource management and recreational planning of forest destinations. An assessment of forest landscape quality (FLQ) could reflect the distribution of landscape resources, hence identifying the hotpots and areas with high visual quality and protection values. The objective of this study is to propose, for the first time, a methodology for assessing FLQ at the national level. Based on China’s forestry inventory database, the paper identified landform patterns and vegetative patterns as determinants (including 12 indicators) to establish an evaluation index system, and further implemented and mapped FLQ using the ArcGIS Engine platform. …

A Brief History Of Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom Jan 2019

A Brief History Of Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

Digital objects are composed of bitstreams, sequences of 1’s and 0’s, which require specific software (and in some cases hardware) to make the content understandable to human users. Digital objects, like word processing documents, digital images, websites, e-mails, datasets and so much more, are fragile, easy to modify, and susceptible to bit rot (loss or reordering parts of the bitstream) and obsolescence. Digital preservation is a combination of policies and workflows that dictate the active management of digital objects to ensure their continued authenticity and meaningful access over time. Obsolescence is one of the unending battles that digital preservationists fight. …

Religious Or Secular: Does Religious Affiliation Affect Lgbtqi Collections At Private College And University Libraries?, Sophia Neuhaus Jan 2019

Religious Or Secular: Does Religious Affiliation Affect Lgbtqi Collections At Private College And University Libraries?, Sophia Neuhaus

Staff publications, research, and presentations

This research project focuses upon private colleges and universities of different faith traditions and a control group of secular institutions. The central question in this study is whether religious affiliation influences both the college climate for LGBTQI individuals and the resources academic libraries provide to their communities. A secondary question explores how these same institutions might be influenced by the political environment of their host states. For example, do Presbyterian colleges in conservative states differ from those in liberal states? This poster session provides results based upon an examination of 200 secular, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic institutions.

After the …
