This investigation sought to elucidate the association between gardening experience and FV intake among college students over a two-year period. Students (N = 593) from eight universities were assessed at the end of their freshman (Y1) and sophomore (Y2) years during the springs of 2016 and 2017, respectively. Electrophysiology Of Repetition Priming For Pseudowords And Words, Ashley Banks, Megan Farrell Jan 2019

Electrophysiology Of Repetition Priming For Pseudowords And Words, Ashley Banks, Megan Farrell

Undergraduate Research Posters 2019

Listeners typically recognize words they have heard recently more efficiently than words they have not heard recently; this is known as a repetition priming effect. When looking at Event Related Potentials (ERPs), which are the averaged encephalographic brain responses to a class of stimuli, it has been demonstrated that the repetition priming effect is observed in both early and late ERP time windows (Massol, Grainger, Midgley, & Holcomb, 2012). ERPs in early time windows (~150-300ms) are thought to reflect auditory sensory processing (Woodman, 2010) (Massol et al., 2012) (Coch & Mitra, 2010), while ERPs in late time windows (~400-700ms) are …

Context-Dependent And Context-Independent Effects Of D1 Receptor Antagonism In The Basolateral And Central Amygdala During Cocaine Self-Administration, Earnest S. Kim, K. Matthew Lattal Jan 2019

Context-Dependent And Context-Independent Effects Of D1 Receptor Antagonism In The Basolateral And Central Amygdala During Cocaine Self-Administration, Earnest S. Kim, K. Matthew Lattal

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

One way that drugs of abuse perturb the dopamine system is by triggering large amounts of extracellular dopamine to efflux into limbic regions. The basolateral (BLA) and central (CeA) nuclei of the amygdala have been shown to play distinct roles in value representation of primary and conditioned reward. However, the precise role of dopaminergic receptors in the BLA and the CeA during reward-related behaviors remains to be determined. Here we investigate the effects of dopamine D1 receptor blockade in the BLA and the CeA during asymptotic performance of cocaine self-administration and in a novel application of contextual renewal under continued …

The Name Game: The Importance Of Resourcefulness, Ruses, And Recall In Stock Ticker Symbols, Gary N. Smith, Naomi Baer, Erica Barry

Pomona Economics

Previous research reported that a portfolio of stocks with clever ticker symbols outperformed the overall market by a significant margin during the years 1984 to 2005. This paper reports the performance of those stocks during the subsequent years 2006 to 2018, and also investigates the 2006-2008 performance of a new set of clever-ticker stocks. Both clever-ticker portfolios beat the market by a substantial margin, supporting the resiliency of the clever-ticker phenomenon.

The Hermeneutics Of Capability From Essence To Functions, From Functions To Capabilities: Preparing The Ontological Ground For An Ethics Inspired By The Capabilities Approach, RóIsíN Lally

Leadership Studies Faculty Scholarship

The goal of the World Report on Disability (WHO 2017) is for all people to live a life of health, comfort, and dignity. This minimal projection for human existence becomes problematic given that there are an estimated one billion people world-wide with reduced functionings or disabilities. This is further complicated by the fact that 80% of those with disabilities are living in low and middle income counties, suggesting a strong link between disability and poverty. (Banks, Kuper and Polack, 2017) Disability, therefore, is a complex intersectionality between health, poverty, and the environment. However, there are deeper considerations of philosophical anthropology …

Developing An Indigenous Measure Of Overall Health And Well-Being: The Wicozani Instrument, Heather J. Peters, Teresa R. Peterson

Psychology Publications

A Native community developed the Wicozani Instrument, a 9-item self-report measure, to assess overall health and well-being from an Indigenous epistemology. The Wicozani Instrument measures mental, physical, and spiritual health and their importance to an individual's quality of life. The instrument’s validity and reliability was examined through two studies. Study 1 utilized standardized measures from Native (i.e., Awareness of Connectedness Scale) and Western (i.e., Psychological Sense of School Membership and Suicide Ideation Questionnaire) epistemologies with Native and non-Native youth. Study 2 utilized a community created measure (i.e., Indigenous Healing Strategies Scale) with Dakota women. Results suggest the Wicozani Instrument is …

Suspicious Collaborators: How Governments In Polycentric Systems Monitor Behavior And Enforce Public Good Provision Rules Against One Another, Jeffrey Hanlon, Tomás Olivier, Edella Schlager

Political Science

Monitoring and enforcement have been recognized as keys for sustainable common pool resource governance. With a couple of notable exceptions, however, scholars have not examined how they are deployed when governments are the primary actors devising such agreements and where multiple public goods are provided for – an important level of governance to understand. We explore the design of monitoring and enforcement safeguards that governments adopt to limit opportunism and support compliance in a complex governing arrangement, the New York City Watersheds Memorandum of Agreement. The agreement defines how New York City and a group of watershed jurisdictions jointly manage …

Graduate School of Social Work Publications and Research

Using data from 1,352 middle-school Israeli adolescents, the current study examines the interface of spirituality and character strengths and its longitudinal contribution to subjective well-being and prosociality. Participants were approached three times over a 14-months period and completed measures of character strengths, spirituality, subjective well-being (positive emotions, life satisfaction), and prosociality. Findings revealed a fourth-factor structure of character strengths that included the typical tripartite classification of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intellectual strengths together with spirituality emerging as a statistically autonomous factor. Spirituality was stable over time and contributed to higher subjective well-being and prosociality both cross- sectionally and longitudinally. Discussion focuses …
