Exploring Motivations And Constraints Of Minority Participation: College Outdoor Adventure Programs, Ryan K. Hines, Curt Davidson, Ryan Zwart, Alan Ewert Jan 2019

Exploring Motivations And Constraints Of Minority Participation: College Outdoor Adventure Programs, Ryan K. Hines, Curt Davidson, Ryan Zwart, Alan Ewert

Research in Outdoor Education

While national demographics in the United States are steadily becoming more racially diverse, participation in outdoor and adventure recreation programs is still dominated by individuals identifying as White and Caucasian. College outdoor adventure programs aiming to provide opportunities for diverse recreational and educational experiences to the student body at large generally struggle to attract minority students. While much research has discussed the disparity, little literature exists to help understand and guide recruitment, and increase participation. This study explored factors contributing to leisure choice in outdoor recreation, awareness of university outdoor programming, and the motivations or constraints that influenced individual participation. …

Adolescent Sense Of Belonging In Outdoor Adventure Education: The Influence Of Conflict And Instructors, Jeremy Jostad, Jim Sibthorp, Jonathan E. Butner, Shannon Rochelle

Research in Outdoor Education

Outdoor adventure education programs are strategically positioned to provide a multitude of positive social outcomes for youth. The social connections adolescents develop with their peers are critically important for positive youth development. This study sought to understand how sense of belonging develops within a wilderness-based outdoor adventure education program while using a dynamical systems theory (DST) framework and analysis. The findings showed that group-based components, such as process conflict influenced the rate of change while instructor support increased the level of sense of belonging students felt. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

In a world that is becoming more globally connected, universities in the United States of America are pushing for more students to participate in study abroad opportunities. The researcher looked to answer the following questions: What factors influence student involvement in study abroad programs? What influence does the study abroad office exert over a student’s decision to study abroad? What conceptions or circumstances do students have prior to college that stimulate them to decide one way or another? The results where then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively paired with Social Judgment Theory. The data suggests that females, non-athletes, those that have …

Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon Jan 2019

Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon

SPU Works

This study investigated empirical associations between others stigma (predictor), self-stigma (mediator), loss of face concerns (moderator), and professional help-seeking attitudes (outcome) among South Korean college students (N = 485). We also explored the dimensionality of close others and public stigmas using bifactor analysis and ancillary measures. Participants were recruited from several universities in South Korea. They completed an online survey containing demographic questions and study measures. Bifactor analysis results indicated that close others and public stigmas may be better treated as a unidimensional measure (i.e., others stigma). Mediation and moderated mediation analyses indicated that others stigma predicted self-stigma, which …

Public Land Management On The Upper Mississippi: Exploring Relationships Between Management Imperatives And Ecosystem Biodiversity, Hunter Colleen Ridley Jan 2019

Public Land Management On The Upper Mississippi: Exploring Relationships Between Management Imperatives And Ecosystem Biodiversity, Hunter Colleen Ridley

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Presently, public land management structure tends to disregard the interconnected nature of the social and ecological systems within managed landscapes. Since these social and ecological systems so heavily influence the identity of landscapes, it is critical that land managers understand the interactions and effects land management has with ecological structure and function. This knowledge helps land managers create more effective, sustainable, and efficient management plans and decisions. This research uses a portion of Upper Mississippi River as a case study for analyzing and discussing public land management on the Mississippi and how its structure may be influencing the ecological identity …

Consumer Capitalist Christmas: How Participation In Christmas Frames Us As Religious Subjects, Shelby Burroughs

Religion: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier every year. It starts with the music that plays on the radio, then retail stores begin to drape their shelves with red and green streamers, followed by Christmas movies running on every other channel. Every December, Christmas feels almost inescapable. The holiday manages to find its way into every facet of public life in the United States. Christians and non-Christians alike find themselves exchanging gifts with friends and loved ones on the 25th of December every year. Christmas is able to be so pervasive because of how unassuming it is. You participate in …

Consultants In The Classroom: Pilot Study Assessing Multidisciplinary Center Collaboration, Carl Brown, Ashley B. Rapp, Adrienne Wallace, Jennifer Torreano, Melanie Rabine, Patrick Johnson Jan 2019

Consultants In The Classroom: Pilot Study Assessing Multidisciplinary Center Collaboration, Carl Brown, Ashley B. Rapp, Adrienne Wallace, Jennifer Torreano, Melanie Rabine, Patrick Johnson

Knowledge Market

Communication center clients come in various forms. Many centers work with individuals and groups while some work with entire classrooms, departments, or colleges. Very few centers both partner with other campus consulting services and interact with large units. While a considerable amount of literature focuses on one-on-one consultations and some work focuses on collaboration between similar centers (McCall, Ellis, & Murphy, 2017), little, if any, research deals with these unique partnerships and how they collaborate to serve groups. This article examines how one communication center partnered with two other campus consulting services to create a purposeful and collaborative relationship with …

Generational Aspects Of U.S. Public Opinion On Renewable Energy And Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Erin Bell Jan 2019

Generational Aspects Of U.S. Public Opinion On Renewable Energy And Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Erin Bell

Sociology

The topics of climate change and renewable energy often are linked in policy discussions and scientific analysis, but public opinion on these topics exhibits both overlap and divergence. Although renewable energy has potentially broader acceptance than anthropogenic climate change, it can also sometimes face differently-based opposition. Analyses of U.S. and regional surveys, including time series of repeated surveys in New Hampshire (2010–2018) and northeast Oregon (2011–2018), explore the social bases of public views on both issues. Political divisions are prominent, although somewhat greater regarding climate change. Such divisions widen with education, an interaction effect documented in other studies as well. …

Are Price-Earnings Ratios Mean Reverting? An Empirical Study, Kevin Klassen Jan 2019

Are Price-Earnings Ratios Mean Reverting? An Empirical Study, Kevin Klassen

Gettysburg Economic Review

Mean reversion in stock prices is a highly studied area in the financial literature with controversial findings. While some economists have found evidence of mean reverting processes in stock prices, many argue in favor of the Efficient Market Hypothesis which states stock prices are random walk processes. This paper seeks to add to the literature on mean reversion but testing for evidence in price-earnings ratios rather than stock prices. The study employs a robust regression model controlling for company-specific and general market factors that influence price-earnings ratio deviations. After correcting for heteroskedasticity, serial correlation, and unit root processes, the results …

Blockchain Technology - China's Bid To High Long-Run Growth, Tyler J. Mann Jan 2019

Blockchain Technology - China's Bid To High Long-Run Growth, Tyler J. Mann

Gettysburg Economic Review

Despite having the second largest economy at $13 trillion, China has only recently surpassed the World Bank’s definition of the ‘middle-income range’ which is a gross national income per capita between $1,000 to $12,000 (constant 2011 international $). This is a noteworthy accomplishment since many other developing nations have fallen victim to economic stagnation within this range leading to the term “middle-income trap”. This paper will argue that one of the ways in which China escaped the middle-income trap and will continue to grow its economic influence is through the support of blockchain technology. Research and development, early technological adoption …

The Effect Of Fiscal Transparency On Output, Inflation, And Government Debt, Luce Menicali Jan 2019

The Effect Of Fiscal Transparency On Output, Inflation, And Government Debt, Luce Menicali

Gettysburg Economic Review

This theoretical paper studies the issue of fiscal transparency, which we define as asymmetry of information between the households’ perception of fiscal policy and the actual government balance sheet, in the context of a 24-hour news cycle. We model the economy using the New Keynesian three-equation model to study the effect of fiscal transparency on output, inflation, and especially government debt in order to draw conclusions that are relevant in the realm of policy-making in a sovereign debt crisis scenario. We find that a higher degree of fiscal transparency leads to greater levels of output and inflation as well as …

Unsustainable Sustainability: Do Policies That Increase Environmental Quality Exacerbate Income Inequality?, Haley K. Skinner Jan 2019

Unsustainable Sustainability: Do Policies That Increase Environmental Quality Exacerbate Income Inequality?, Haley K. Skinner

Gettysburg Economic Review

International pressure to meet climate and sustainability goals are mounting. Countries attempting to industrialize in the age of sustainability are tasked with industrializing using low-carbon practices. The transition to a “green” economy requires elimination of some jobs and skillsets that may upset social equality. This paper empirically examines the hypothesis that policies aimed at increased environmental performance promote increased income inequality in developing countries. Because existing literature firmly supports the hypothesis that lower income inequality leads to higher environmental performance, this paper develops a simultaneous equations model (SEM) to estimate the hypothesized endogenous relationship using two stage least squares (2SLS) …
