Modeling The Expected Cost-Effectiveness And Impact Of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis In Uganda And Swaziland, Project Soar Jan 2018

Modeling The Expected Cost-Effectiveness And Impact Of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis In Uganda And Swaziland, Project Soar

HIV and AIDS

Clinical trials have shown that oral antiretrovirals (ARVs) containing tenofovir/emtricitabine used by HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV acquisition, called oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), are safe and effective in several populations. Prior modeling work has demonstrated that oral PrEP is most cost effective when targeted to populations at very high risk of infection, with risk dependent on a combination of individual behavior and epidemic contexts. This brief describes a study Project SOAR is conducting to assist Uganda and Swaziland in making critical decisions about oral PrEP introduction and scale up by modeling the expected cost effectiveness and impact of oral PrEP …

What Drives Household Recovery After Disasters? A Case Study Of New York City After 2012 Hurricane Sandy, Divya Chandrasekhar, Robin Rohfeder, Yu Xiao, Donovan Finn Jan 2018

What Drives Household Recovery After Disasters? A Case Study Of New York City After 2012 Hurricane Sandy, Divya Chandrasekhar, Robin Rohfeder, Yu Xiao, Donovan Finn

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Community recovery from disasters depends on how its subunits, such as households, fare. But the current knowledge on this topic is fragmented and undervalues a household’s agency for action, which can result in narrowly designed, and sometimes counterproductive, recovery plans and aid policies. In this article, we examine various internal and contextual characteristics of households to answer the question, what factors influence household recovery the most and how? Using logistical regression analysis on random sample survey data collected from households affected by the 2012 Hurricane Sandy in New York City, NY, we discuss the influence of various socioeconomic factors, knowledge …

Pedagogy Of Pitch In L2 Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish Jan 2018

Pedagogy Of Pitch In L2 Blackfoot, Naatosi I. Fish

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Pitch in Blackfoot is characterized by the raising of relative pitch on a syllable in a word. Pitch is not a consciously recognized piece of information among native speakers or teachers. However, pitch is important as it impacts the meaning of words. This study looks at the efficacy of visual guides for Blackfoot pronunciation of pitch by second language learners. I hypothesized that use of visual assistance would improve pitch pronunciation in second language learners.

Subjects were nine Blackfoot learners recruited on campus. Participants were shown 15 words with images and asked to pronounce them. Subjects were then given pitch …

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen Jan 2018

Language Use In Totalistic Social Groups, Emily H. Allen

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

A totalistic social group is defined as a collection of individuals who share similar values and goals and who live together within intensive boundaries enforced by the group’s leadership and/or members themselves (Lifton 1969). The focus of this project is to better understand the effect of language on (I) a totalistic group’s social structure and (II) the ideologies and actions of members. The limited linguistic research on totalistic groups claims that leaders and members use language in order to enforce rules and beliefs, encourage conformity, and maintain as well as increase membership. By examining language practices in the US military, …

The Sovereign Signifier: Agamben And The Nonhuman - Chapter, Paul Eisenstein

Faculty Books

This book initiates the discussion between psychoanalysis and recent humanist and social scientific interest in a fundamental contemporary topic – the nonhuman. The authors question where we situate the subject (as distinct from the human) in current critical investigations of a nonanthropoentric universe.

Perceived Fitness And Exercise Intensity Can Predict Exercise Enjoyment, Thomas G. Plante, Marily Oppezzo, Brendan Tran, L. Aislinn Diaz Jan 2018

Perceived Fitness And Exercise Intensity Can Predict Exercise Enjoyment, Thomas G. Plante, Marily Oppezzo, Brendan Tran, L. Aislinn Diaz

Psychology

The goal of the study was to investigate the potential interplay of environmental, physiological, and psychological factors with exercise enjoyment. Eighty female undergraduate students at a private, West Coast university participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: control (C), in which the participant exercised alone; talking (T), in which the participant exercised with two confederates who provided “small talk” conversation; and no talking (NT), in which the participant was told she/he had been randomly selected not to wear headphones while the two confederates would wear them. Although experimental group assignment was unrelated to …

Researchers’ participation in online RIMSs

This article examined how researchers participated in research information management systems (RIMSs), their motivations for participation, and their priorities for those motivations. Profile maintenance, question-answering, and endorsement activities were used to define three cumulatively increasing levels of participation: Readers, Record Managers, and Community Members. Junior researchers were more engaged in RIMSs than were senior researchers. Postdocs had significantly higher odds of endorsing other researchers for skills and being categorized as Community Members than did full and associate professors. Assistant professors were significantly more likely to be Record Managers than were members of any other seniority …

Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton Jan 2018

Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Anglo-American jurisprudence emphasizes the rule of reason; it grossly neglects the reason of rules. We play socioeconomic-legal-political games that can be described empirically only by their rules. But most of us play without an understanding or ap-preciation of the rules, how they came into being, how they are enforced, how they can be changed, and most important, how they can be normatively evaluated. (Bren-nan and Buchanan, 1985, preface).

Costs And Benefits Of Building Faster Payment Systems: The Uk Experience, Claire Greene, Marc Rysman, Scott Schuh, Oz Shy

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

: A number of countries have implemented faster payment services that allow consumers and businesses to rapidly transfer money between bank accounts. These services compete with slower, existing payment services. In 2008, the United Kingdom implemented its Faster Payments Service (FPS) at a cost of less than ₤200 million (.014 percent of U.K. GDP, or $307 million) spread over seven years, plus investment costs borne by each participating bank to connect to the FPS. This paper examines the economic cost-benefit analysis underlying the U.K. FPS investment decision and describes the subsequent diffusion and use of FPS through 2014.

A Test Of The Institutionally Induced Equilibrium Hypothesis: On The Limited Fiscal Impact Of Two Celebrity Governors, Roger D. Congleton, Yang Zhou Jan 2018

A Test Of The Institutionally Induced Equilibrium Hypothesis: On The Limited Fiscal Impact Of Two Celebrity Governors, Roger D. Congleton, Yang Zhou

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We test for the stabilizing effects of political institutions on fiscal policies by examining the impact of two unlikely governors on their state’s fiscal policies. Fiscal policies are joint products of executive and legislative decisions. These institutional factors tend to moderate the effect of changes in the chief executive, as does partisan competition for office. Jesse Ventura of Minnesota’s and Arnold Schwarzenegger of California were unique—surprise—governors of their respective states. Although both governors were arguably less constrained by partisan loyalties than most others, the other institutional factors would still tend to limit their impact on public policy. Our evidence suggests …

The Spatial Distribution Of Urban Consumer Service Firms: Evidence From Yelp Reviews, Brad Humphreys, Josh Matti Jan 2018

The Spatial Distribution Of Urban Consumer Service Firms: Evidence From Yelp Reviews, Brad Humphreys, Josh Matti

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

A growing literature employs distance-based measures of localization to assess the spatial distribution of firms with a focus on manufacturing across a country. We analyze the spatial concentration of a variety of consumer services firms in the Phoenix, AZ area using geo-referenced Yelp data from over 29,000 establishments. Results from a K-density approach indicate substantial localization and service differentiation among localized firms. Firm concentration varies across service cost and quality; higher quality/cost establishments tend to cluster. Our results further understanding of the modern urban landscape as cities are increasingly centers of consumption.

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn Jan 2018

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

On 8 May 2002, shocking images of five North Korean refugees at a Japanese consulate in northeast China were captured. Although two members of the party—both men—successfully made it inside the consulate, two women and a child were dragged away from the gate of their safe haven by Chinese police (Gittings 2002). All five individuals were eventually detained—and though their fates remain unknown, it is likely they were immediately deported to North Korea, possibly the worst outcome for any North Korean defector.

Ukiyo-E: How Patterns In Edo Culture Shaped "The Floating World", Vanessa Hall Jan 2018

Ukiyo-E: How Patterns In Edo Culture Shaped "The Floating World", Vanessa Hall

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

Until the seventeenth century, it was exceedingly rare to find art depicting everyday Japanese life. It was only when artists began painting scenes from the street life in Yoshiwara, the red light district in the capital city of the time, that the popular school of art known as “Ukiyo-e,” a highly fashionable style of Japanese woodblock prints, was formed (J.E.L. 1914, pp. 1–4). Emerging from an era of Chinese philosophy that was against anything Japanese, early examples of Ukiyo-e were rare until Hishikawa Moronobu discovered a way to mass-produce the art through woodblock engraving prints, which ultimately established Ukiyo-e as …

Analogical Reasoning, Stella Christie Jan 2018

Analogical Reasoning, Stella Christie

Psychology Faculty Works

Analogical reasoning is the ability to perceive and use relational commonality between two situations. Most commonly, analogy involves mapping relational structures from a familiar (base situation to an unfamiliar situation (target). For example, solving the analogy “chicken is to chick like tiger is to___?” requires perceiving the relation parent–offspring in the base domain (chicken:chick) and mapping the same relation to the target (tiger:__?) to get to the answer cub. Relational similarity is the crux of analogical reasoning; what is crucial here is the sameness of the relation, not of other similarities—chickens and tigers do not look alike.

The Place Of Culture In Psychology: A Social Constructionist Standpoint, Kenneth J. Gergen Jan 2018

The Place Of Culture In Psychology: A Social Constructionist Standpoint, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

Tensions between various approaches to culture in psychology have been intense. Critique across the various approaches has led to alienation and isolation. As I propose, by removing the vision of “truth making” in psychology we also remove the barriers to mutual understanding and appreciation. If we understand accounts of culture as social constructions, themselves wedded to their cultures of origin, we realize the advantages of multiple perspectives. We solve previously insoluble dilemmas, sharpen our critical perspectives, and open up new potentials for interpretation and action.
