When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston
When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The paper focuses on a user-centered design project in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU). BYU students who are parents comprise about 25% of the student population. University leaders have a goal for students to graduate in fewer semesters. Some students—especially females—drop out of school upon becoming a parent. Other students delay graduation by taking fewer classes in order to attend to their parental duties. Student parents who use the library frequently did not feel welcome when accompanied by their children. Oftentimes the parents elected not to use the library as the study resource it was …
Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund
Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Challenges occur as research typically require “just in time” library support. The evolution of a research project may lead to sudden changes in coordination between different phases or steps in the project. Consequentially, the need for flexible research support conflicts the possibilities for long-term resource planning and coordination in the library. Moreover, these consequences will enlarge in a situation with resource scarcity. The aim of my presentation is to address some challenges posed by the time-logic inherent in research projects, based on experiences from the literature search team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (formerly HIOA, Oslo and Akershus University …
Reading Scholarly Articles, Hilary Kraus
Reading Scholarly Articles, Hilary Kraus
New England Library Instruction Group
This presentation demonstrated a lesson on effectively reading scholarly research articles which was used with students in a first year English course. In the lesson, students are given a relatively short scholarly article, some guidance in effective techniques for breaking down and understanding this kind of article, and a worksheet to guide their process. When they complete the worksheet, they're given an article on a similar topic from a popular source and use a shorter worksheet to compare the two. The lesson ends with a group discussion. Students get practice, in a supportive environment, in understanding how to parse a …

Title: Effects of Naltrexone on Alcohol and Nicotine Use in Female P Rats
Author: Usman Z. Hamid, Department of Psychology, University of Kentucky
Faculty Mentor: Michael T. Bardo, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, University of Kentucky
Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance worldwide. It is often co-abused with nicotine, which increases the difficulty of cessation of both alcohol and nicotine. Despite having similar mechanisms of action, there is no single medication to treat the co-abuse. The objective of the current study is to analyze the effects of the opiate antagonist naltrexone on alcohol consumption and the co-use of alcohol and …

Examining Delayed Onset Of Dementia In The Bilingual Geriatric Population, Erica Brown, Elizabeth Hartman
Examining Delayed Onset Of Dementia In The Bilingual Geriatric Population, Erica Brown, Elizabeth Hartman
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Dementia is the largest cause of dependency and disability in older adults, affecting nearly 50 million people worldwide with about 10 million new cases every year. Presently, there are no cures for dementia. Consequently, a growing body of evidence suggests that bilingualism may delay the onset of clinical dementia symptoms by several years.
Objectives: The purpose of this review is to summarize and analyze current evidence from studies that examined how bilingualism delays the onset of dementia. Evidence is reviewed suggesting that bilingualism may delay the dementia symptoms due to an increase in cognitive reserve, which refers to an …

Determinants Of Parking Fees On College Campuses, Hannah Huckeby
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The price of parking has recently been a hot topic around the Murray area, especially among the college students. Due to the drastic increase in parking pass prices there has been an abundant amount of discussion surrounding this idea of parking being a public good. Many individuals have been outraged which has brought up the questions of why there is a price tag on something that many people consider a public good. With that being said, this paper is going to take a deeper look into parking specifically pertaining to college campuses but also in the cities surrounding these institutions. …

The drug overdose deaths in the USA increased by ~20% from 2015 to 2016 to the total >63,600 drug overdose deaths in 2016. Kentucky is among the highest rate of drug overdose death states in the USA. The current estimates of the prevalence of substance abuse are based on the self-reported surveys, overdose/toxicological reports, and drug-related crime statistics. Survey-based conventional approaches are not only cost and time-intensive but also underestimate the actual consumption of drugs. As “wastewater never lie,” the drug residues in raw wastewater collected from the centralized wastewater treatment plants were utilized to determine the consumption rate of …

Violence Against Women conference
Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is a topic rapidly increasing in the lives of our youth, however it is not discussed in the schools or in the community. Individuals who suffer from dating violence in their youth are more likely to experience domestic violence with an intimate partner as an adult. This presentation raises awareness of the term “dating violence” and highlights the impact of TDV in the Latino community in an interactive format that includes open discussion of cultural norms and appropriation in the Latino community, which can enable TDV. Healthy strategies to prevent/identify/escape TDV are also included, along with …

The Constituent Women Of Violence Against Women, Wilmer Morales, Jocelyn Martinez, Samantha Amaro
Violence Against Women conference
The Violence against Women Initiative is a very important framework in a time in which women need a platform to be able to discuss the problems and inequality they face in society. Throughout history women have been demonized, abuse, and treated unfairly, which has affected the way women respond to acts of violence. However, recent events have allowed women to gain the courage to stand against acts including verbal, physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. Society, in general, has to be educated and be made aware of how to respond and meticulously act during events that violate the rights of women, …
Demanding Accountability In Domestic Violence Courts, Johnna Pike
Demanding Accountability In Domestic Violence Courts, Johnna Pike
Violence Against Women conference
This presentation explores whether specialized domestic violence courts are achieving their stated objective of abuser accountability. Domestic violence emerged from the private realm of family life into the public consciousness during the 1970s. Since then, there has been a largely successful movement to reframe domestic violence as a “real” social problem necessitating meaningful criminal justice intervention. Within the criminal justice system, victim and feminist groups have mostly prevailed in controlling the discourse around domestic violence as a gender-based offense. As a result, a criminal court model aimed at empowering victims and at holding abusers accountable has emerged. However, the efficacy …
