Halbert as 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Infantry, Kentucky State Guard. Signed by Governor William S. Taylor, who requested that a militia company be raised in anticipation of violence following the contested gubernatorial election of 1899.

Bertram describes how funds were raised in order to build the schoolhouses, teachers’ annual incomes, and a “typical day” in the life of a student. The paper also contains color photographs of each one-room school and a brief description of the location.

Greenwell gathered information from two teachers, both of whom taught in one-room schools for an extended period of time. The author describes each schoolhouse as well as common characteristics of how the schools operated on a daily basis. The paper includes pictures of the Hagan School and the former New Haven School.

Smith, Louisville, Kentucky, in state and local politics and civic causes. Active in local Democratic councils, Mrs. Smith left the party in acrimony in 1927 over its selection of candidates for governor of Kentucky and mayor of Louisville, and worked thereafter in Republican campaign committees and delegations. Includes a petition demanding enforcement of American neutrality in World War II.

Brooks collected information from Earl Austin, a longtime farmer and blacksmith from Beaver Dam, Kentucky. The paper also contains black and white photographs of blacksmithing implements, the shoeing process, and Austin’s workspace.

Student paper titled “The Preacher’s Just Like a Grasshopper: A Study of a Kentucky Song Maker” in which Steven Schulman details the life of Howess Dewey Winfrey, a song-maker from Cumberland County. Schulman collected folk songs and performances from Winfrey over the course of two months. His fieldwork revealed that Winfrey was a creator of satirical tunes, which were influenced by his childhood, his experiences with the Church of the Nazarene, his time spent as a logger, his relationships with family and friends, politics, and land ownership.
