Laws, Norms, And The Institutional Analysis And Development Framework, Daniel H. Cole Jan 2017

Laws, Norms, And The Institutional Analysis And Development Framework, Daniel H. Cole

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Elinor Ostrom’s Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework has been described as ‘one of the most developed and sophisticated attempts to use institutional and stakeholder assessment in order to link theory and practice, analysis and policy’. But not all elements in the framework are sufficiently well developed. This paper focuses on one such element: the ‘rules-in-use’ (a.k.a. ‘rules’ or ‘working rules’). Specifically, it begins a long-overdue conversation about relations between formal legal rules and ‘working rules’ by offering a tentative and very simple typology of relations. Type 1: Some formal legal rules equal or approximate the working rules; Type 2: …

Balancing Research, Teaching, Clinical Work, And Family: Nine Suggestions For Young Professionals, Elizabeth K. Lefler Jan 2017

Balancing Research, Teaching, Clinical Work, And Family: Nine Suggestions For Young Professionals, Elizabeth K. Lefler

Faculty Work

Balancing multiple professional roles and a family can be demanding. The current paper is a non-evidence based list of informal, anecdotal suggestions for professionals who strive to balance multiple work roles with the demands of raising young children. It is important to note I make no claims that this is an evidence-based method for achieving optimal work-family balance. Rather, I was invited to this conference to discuss my own experiences balancing work and family; this paper reflects that non-scientific aim, and includes a list of nine suggestions that I hope will be helpful to some. I am a licensed clinical …

Factors That Influence Stem-Promising Females’ Decision To Attend A Non Research-Intensive Undergraduate Institution, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Ashley J. Hurlock Jan 2017

Factors That Influence Stem-Promising Females’ Decision To Attend A Non Research-Intensive Undergraduate Institution, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Ashley J. Hurlock

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Non research-intensive institutions of higher education are effective at narrowing STEM gender gaps in major selection and persistence to degree completion, yet the decision to attend such a setting is likely seen as counterintuitive when such institutions typically have lower levels of research, financial resources, and total student enrollments in the sciences. This case study identifies institutional factors reported by ‘STEM-Promising’ females, defined as females who completed at least one Advanced Placement (A.P.) STEM course in high school, as influencing their decision to attend their non research-intensive undergraduate institution. Using a quantitative, crosssectional research design and original survey, 23 out …

Has Capitalism Lost Its Puritan Spirit? What Do Recent Wvs Data Say About Religiosity And Work Values?, Veysel Bozkurt, Birol A. Yeşilada

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper tests the arguments of social theorists about the changing spirit of capitalism in countries with different levels of economic development using the recent World Values Survey (WVS). Max Weber claimed that the Protestant Ethic was the spirit of capitalism for salvation and improved economic development in Europe. During the last 40 years, sociologists, such as Bell and Bauman, have claimed that capitalism has started to lose its puritan spirit and a new secular/hedonist personality type has emerged as the new characteristic of post-industrial/ consumer capitalism. The data show that religiosity and work values decline but leisure and self-expression …

Busy Intersections: A Framework For Revitalization, George Tucker Childs Jan 2017

Busy Intersections: A Framework For Revitalization, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper reports on the applicability of a pedagogical model for use in West Africa drawn from adult literacy practices in the United States. It proposes bridging the gap between linguists, teachers, and community organizers, and building on the ethnographic skills of language documenters. One increasingly important goal of language documentation has been “creating and mobilizing documentation in support of pedagogy” (Nathan and Fang 2009:132) or even as a “social movement” (Dobrin and Berson 2011). A documentary perspective is here synthesized with an adult literacy one, fitted to the context of West Africa, to offer some guidelines for revitalization efforts.

Using Technologies To Support The Social And Academic Engagement Of Young People With Cancer, Owen Michael Donovan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Situated in the larger questions of how to support the educational engagement and positive psychosocial development of young people with cancer, the purpose of this exploratory study was to address gaps in the literature and build understanding of how young people use digital and Internet-connected technologies in ways that support their social and academic engagement. Through a multiple case-design, I examined the school-based and everyday (outside of school) technology uses of five young people. This study found that the cancer experience changed or reframed a young person’s motivational engagement with school. Doing well academically was a sign of a normalcy …

The Effect Of Justice And Injustice On Sleep Quality, Jessica Wooldridge Brown Jan 2017

The Effect Of Justice And Injustice On Sleep Quality, Jessica Wooldridge Brown

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The effect of workplace stressors on physical health has been well documented (Ganster & Rosen, 2013; Nixon, Mazzola, Bauer, Krueger, & Spector, 2011). However, gaps in the research led to two main goals of the study: (1) understanding in a fuller range of reactions through the study of justice adherence and rule infraction and (2) exploring an explanation for the justice-health effects. This multilevel, daily diary study was designed to measure participants’ perceptions of organizational fairness and physical health. After that participants responded to daily surveys on the perceived supervisor interactions, emotions, rumination, and sleep quality over the course of …

The Use Of A Gambling Accelerator To Reduce Risky Wagering In Problem Gamblers, James Broussard Jan 2017

The Use Of A Gambling Accelerator To Reduce Risky Wagering In Problem Gamblers, James Broussard

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

We evaluated an intervention based on a digital gambling accelerator to ascertain whether the accelerator is equally effective as brief Motivational Interviewing (MI) to change gambling behavior compared to a control group. Frequent scratch-off lottery gamblers recruited from the community (42 at-risk and 45 probable pathological gamblers) were randomly assigned to either a digital gambling accelerator intervention, brief MI, or a control task. After the interventions, participants were offered the opportunity to purchase authentic scratch-off tickets using a portion or all of their participant remuneration ($30). Neither of the two active interventions reduced the purchasing of scratch-off tickets. However, changes …

Code Switching, Lexical Borrowing, And Polylanguaging In Valencian Spanish : An Analysis Of Data From Conversational Corpora And Twitter, Andrew Jordan Lavender

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study examines lexical borrowing, code switching, and polylanguaging in Valencian Spanish to better understand how each is used differently in oral conversation in comparison with online communication on Twitter. This study compares data collected from three published corpora of oral interviews of speakers of Valencian Spanish with data collected from Twitter profiles of individuals residing in Valencia. In each of the sources Spanish is the preferred code into which Valencian material is inserted. A unique feature of data from the published corpora is the high frequency of code switching (CS) into Valencian in instances of reported speech. With regard …

Repetitive Negative Thinking And The Maintenance Of Social Appearance Anxiety : An Experimental Manipulation Using Psychophysiological And Subjective Measurement, Erin Elizabeth Reilly Jan 2017

Repetitive Negative Thinking And The Maintenance Of Social Appearance Anxiety : An Experimental Manipulation Using Psychophysiological And Subjective Measurement, Erin Elizabeth Reilly

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Social appearance anxiety (SAA), which refers to fear of having one’s appearance negatively evaluated by others, has been posited to be a risk factor for the development of both eating pathology and social anxiety, but the processes through which this factor is maintained over time remain unclear. The current study aims to evaluate repetitive negative thinking (RNT) as a process through which SAA is maintained over time. Undergraduate females (N = 126) attended an appointment during which they were asked to complete self-report measurements, make an impromptu speech task related to appearance to induce SAA, were randomized to either engage …

Motivation To Adopt : Understanding Nonprofit Inter-Organizational Collaboration In Delivery Of Social Services, Sung-Eun Kim Jan 2017

Motivation To Adopt : Understanding Nonprofit Inter-Organizational Collaboration In Delivery Of Social Services, Sung-Eun Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Inter-organizational collaboration has been emphasized by governments, nonprofit funders, and community-based nonprofits for service integration and capacity building. As collaboration has become one of the big buzzwords in nonprofit management and public policy, a large number of studies have focused on cross-sectoral collaborations such as government-nonprofit relationships (Boris & Steuerle, 2006; Bryson, 2011; Gazley, 2008; Gazley & Brudney, 2007; Salamon, 1987, 1995; Young, 2006). However, little attention has been paid to collaboration between community-based nonprofits (Provan, Milward, & Isett, 2002; Takahashi & Smutny, 2001), and the existing literature stays short of specifying the unique features of collaboration between them (Guo …

Relationships Among Self-Efficacy, Regulatory Focus, And Perceived Managerial Safety Practice For Employees' Safety Performance, Yoon Seok Choi Jan 2017

Relationships Among Self-Efficacy, Regulatory Focus, And Perceived Managerial Safety Practice For Employees' Safety Performance, Yoon Seok Choi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study examined a model involving the influence of the distal variable of self-efficacy and the proximal variables of self-regulation and perceived managerial safety practice in predicting employees’ safety behaviors. In this study, 198 hospital employees completed surveys measuring self-efficacy, regulatory focus, and managerial safety practice. They also completed measures of safety performance: safety participation and safety compliance. Results suggest that self-efficacy, regulatory focus, and perceived managerial safety practice are positively related to the safety performance. Specifically, high self-efficacy is more positively associated with safety performance. Promotion focus and prevention focus were both strongly associated with safety participation and safety …

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire In Vegans And Omnivores, Sydney Heiss Jan 2017

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire In Vegans And Omnivores, Sydney Heiss

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) has been shown to be a valid and reliable measure of eating-related pathology; however, the original four-factor structure has proven difficult to replicate in diverse samples of respondents. Based on the differences in dietary patterns in vegans that are often interpreted as indicative as greater eating disorder symptoms, proper measurement of eating disorder measures is especially important. The purpose of this study was to compare goodness-of-fit of five alternative models of the EDE-Q in a sample of vegans recruited from the community (i.e., individuals refraining from all animal products, n = 395) and undergraduate …
