In God We Trust: Reconciling Religiosity In A Secular Nation, Tess Saperstein
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
Since its founding, the United States has been composed of a diversity of religions, making religious tolerance and the separation of church and state necessary for the maintenance of a peaceful coexistence. It is inscribed in the First Amendment of the Constitution that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Nonetheless, despite a clear institutional differentiation between religious and nonreligious spheres of society, the United States has remained, on the whole, a devout nation. In 2016, 89 percent of Americans reported that they believe in God and 72 percent said they …

Neoliberal Evolution Of The Space Exploration Industry In Relation To The Tech Industry, William Allen Preecs
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
Ingenuity is a part of the American character. As Americans, we must reflect on the mistakes of our past in the evolution of Tech to best approach the coming evolution of the space exploration industry.

Part 4: Airbnb Rising: Short-Term Rentals And The "Gig Economy", Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Commonwealth Reports
Airbnb offers consumers short-term rentals that increase choice and lower costs. Cities in the Commonwealth are struggling with the question of how to work with Airbnb and similar firms, and the rise of Airbnb is a challenge to the traditional lodging sector. We explore the emergence of Airbnb, its phenomenal growth, and ask how Airbnb plays a role in the larger “gig economy.”

Part 5: Affordability And Access In Virginia Public Higher Education, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Commonwealth Reports
The typical public four-year university has increased its published tuition and fees two to four times as rapidly as the consumer price index. Have reductions in state appropriations driven these increases or are they a result of administrative proliferation, new amenities and the lack of firm control on tuition and fees by the Commonwealth? We estimate the costs and consequences.

Part 3: The Scourge Of Opioids In The Commonwealth, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Commonwealth Reports
Opioid-related deaths have skyrocketed in the Commonwealth and the United States. Almost three-quarters of those who abuse opioids start with a legitimate prescription. We investigate the rise of fentanyl as the primary cause of overdose fatalities and compare opioid practices in the United States with other industrialized countries. We estimate the costs of the opioid crisis and ask what steps can be taken to help those currently addicted and to prevent future deaths.

Part 6: Time To Go Regional Or Mega?, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Commonwealth Reports
Interest in regional cooperation is rising again in the Commonwealth. We discuss the benefits of regionalism and examine the rise of megaregions in the United States. We ask whether there is a Richmond-Hampton Roads megaregion in the making.

State of the Commonwealth Reports
This is the third State of the Commonwealth Report produced by the Center for Economic Analysis and Policy at Old Dominion University. The report is sponsored, in part, by ODU's Strome College of Business. While the report represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, it does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, John R. Broderick, or the Board of Visitors.
This report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make the Commonwealth of Virginia an even better place to live, work, and do business. We are …

Although violence prevention has largely focused on students, national and state-level studies suggest that teacher-directed violence warrants attention by researchers, policy makers, and school stakeholders. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the empirical literature on teacher-directed violence, including the extent of the problem, types of violence teachers experience, measurement issues, and how this problem varies across perpetrators and social contexts. We specify recommendations for assessment, including developing and using reliable and valid measures to better understand teachers' experiences with violence. Violence prevention approaches are described, and we advocate for assessment and intervention that incorporate teacher experiences. Using a …
The Moral High Road In The Undercity: An Examination Of Ethics In A Mumbai Slum, Mary L. Bauer
The Moral High Road In The Undercity: An Examination Of Ethics In A Mumbai Slum, Mary L. Bauer
Catholic Studies Faculty Publications
As of 2016, 1.6 billion people around the globe lacked proper shelter and of these, one billion lived in informal settlements, also called slums, according to data collected by the United Nations (UN-Habitat 2016). Investigative journalist Katherine Boo spent four years, between 2007 and 2011, interviewing and shadowing the residents of one such slum on the outskirts of Mumbai. Her goal was to draw attention to socio-economic inequality (Boo, 2014 pp. 247-248), but in the course of collecting data about the consequences of poverty and residents’ attempts to rise out of it, she also recorded information about their moral choices, …

This case explores the series of strategic decisions by event organisers and Formula One Management that ultimately drove Formula One's Istanbul Grand Prix to a dead end. The Istanbul Grand Prix required high levels of subsidy from the Turkish government and private investors, yet ended before realizing the expected goals. Findings reveal several factors that contributed to the discontinuation of Istanbul's Formula One Grand Prix, including a misunderstanding of the Turkish market, high costs, low spectator interest, and increased competition from other cities. The case provides a model that other cities considering hosting a major international motorsport event should consider.

How Participants Report Their Health Status: Cognitive Interviews Of Self-Rated Health Across Race/Ethnicity, Gender, Age, And Educational Attainment, Dana Garbarski, Jennfier Dykema, Kenneth D. Croes, Dorothy F. Edwards
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
Self-rated health (SRH) is widely used to measure subjective health. Yet it is unclear what underlies health ratings, with implications for understanding the validity of SRH overall and across sociodemographic characteristics. We analyze participants’ explanations of how they formulated their SRH answer in addition to which health factors they considered and examine group differences in these processes.
Methods
Cognitive interviews were conducted with 64 participants in a convenience quota sample crossing dimensions of race/ethnicity (white, Latino, black, American Indian), gender, age, and education. Participants rated their health then described their thoughts when answering SRH. We coded participants’ answers in …
Challenging The System? The Potential For Radical Politics In The Age Of Ferguson, Danae Hart
Challenging The System? The Potential For Radical Politics In The Age Of Ferguson, Danae Hart
Ethnic Studies Review
As a social movement continues to grow challenging the justice system that fails to prosecute and convict police officers use of deadly force, it is crucial to note what hegemonic constructs maintain the institutional power structures that continue to harm people of color. When police officers are acquitted when they inflict deadly harm on unarmed citizens the justice system is working to maintain the power structures that devalues Black lives. When hegemonic power structures perpetuate injustice it appears necessary to challenge and deconstruct the system as a whole. Do the protest movements choose to challenge hegemony or rather seek to …

Black Lives Matter: Imagining And Realizing An Equitable Black Future, Ravi K. Perry
Ethnic Studies Review
The idea for this special Ethnic Studies Review edition, Black Lives Matter: Imagining and Realizing an Equitable Black Future, germinated prior to the election of the 45th president of the United States. However, what this series of articles and commentaries contribute to the movement for Black lives is even more critically important.
Against Critical Race Theory, Paul C. Mocombe
Against Critical Race Theory, Paul C. Mocombe
Ethnic Studies Review
Critical Race Theory (CRT) seeks to apply the negative dialectics of critical theory to the intersection of race, law, and power in the pursuit of racial and ethnic equality in Western society. That is to say, critical race theorists seek to convict Western society for not identifying with their values due to the prevalence of racial and ethnic oppression and subordination in the society. I argue here that this pursuit of racial emancipation and anti-subordination through the negative dialectics of critical theory by critical race theorists offers a false sense of racial difference which is convicting the values of the …
Being In One’S Place: Race, Ontology And The Killing Of Trayvon Martin, Ron Scapp
Being In One’S Place: Race, Ontology And The Killing Of Trayvon Martin, Ron Scapp
Ethnic Studies Review
The killing of Trayvon Martin along with the trial and acquittal of George Zimmerman provoked many discussions and debates: some touching upon painful issues, others just rather painful to listen to or read. What struck me most however were the conversations and opinions about what the killing, trial, and subsequent acquittal meant for our nation. What we came to learn is that the killing, trial and acquittal mean different things to different people. That fact should neither surprise us nor make us hesitant to examine, still further, the complex nature of the Trayvon Martin killing, its aftermath, and the history …
Black Lives Matter: Decrypting Encrypted Racism, Basil Ugorji
Black Lives Matter: Decrypting Encrypted Racism, Basil Ugorji
Ethnic Studies Review
The agitation of the Black Lives Matter movement has dominated the public discourse in the United States. Mobilized against the killing of unarmed black people, the movement and their sympathizers have made a series of demands for justice and dignity for the black people. However, many critics have raised concern over the legitimacy of the phrase, black lives matter since all lives irrespective of race, should matter. This article does not intend to pursue the ongoing debate over the semantic use of black lives or all lives. Instead, the paper seeks to study, through the lenses of the African American …
Hyphy Sparked A Social Movement, Andrea L.S. Moore
Hyphy Sparked A Social Movement, Andrea L.S. Moore
Ethnic Studies Review
“Hyphy,” a genre of rap and lifestyle associated with Bay Area hip hop evolved into a counter-cultural social movement for marginalized youth in early 2000. Hyphy originated from Black youth as a musical protest in response to their historical lack of social power, economic resources and systematic institutional oppression. Hyphy provided a space to release tension, celebrate life and freedom of expression, primarily as a means of resisting hegemonic perceptions of Black youth and their cultural productions. Applying a cultural studies theoretical approach, this ethnographic research examines literature and media coverage pre and post Hyphy highlighting the ways in which …

The Color Of Mass Incarceration, Ronnie B. Tucker Sr.
Ethnic Studies Review
This article looks at the issue of incarceration with a focus on the number of African Americans both male and female who are now incarcerated in the United States. The article takes an analytical perspective in reviewing the fact that the majority of African Americans in the prison population are not there for violent crimes, but yet, African Americans contribute to the mass color of incarceration. The article also includes discussion on how the “so-called’ justice systems has treated African Americans unfairly when charged with the same criminal offenses as those of the majority population. The paper also addresses the …
The Birth Of A Cinematic Storyline Normalizing Violence Against Black Lives, James Curiel
The Birth Of A Cinematic Storyline Normalizing Violence Against Black Lives, James Curiel
Ethnic Studies Review
The first Hollywood blockbuster, The Birth of a Nation, did more than establish cinematic conventions of camera techniques and movie distribution, for it also established a conventional storyline whereby white, patriarchal power is re-established through violence led by a white savior. This storyline can be traced throughout the history of major blockbusters such as Gone with the Wind of 1939, the cavalry trilogy by John Ford in the 1940s, The Omega Man from 1971, and The Outlaw Josie Wales from 1976. A quandary thus arises as to why The Birth of a Nation is held in such infamy and disdain …
The Black Lives Matter Movement And Why The Response Of All Lives Matter Is Misleading, Scott Loken
The Black Lives Matter Movement And Why The Response Of All Lives Matter Is Misleading, Scott Loken
Ethnic Studies Review
This paper discusses the Black Lives Matter movement, it’s brief history and relevance, and the problem with the response of All Lives Matter and how it is misleading. It discusses incidents leading up to the initial Social Media hashtag and how the statement took off as a rallying cry in response to any incident which seemed to be racially motivated, especially in situations where police officers were involved resulting in the death of African American citizens. This article examines how the organization was first developed in response to the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman and his acquittal of …
