Normalization Of Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites For Increasing The Temporal Resolution And Long-Term Trending, Harika Vuppula Jan 2017

Normalization Of Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites For Increasing The Temporal Resolution And Long-Term Trending, Harika Vuppula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given their low level of temporal, spatial, and spectral variability, Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites (PICS) have been increasingly desired as data sources for radiometric calibration of Earth imaging satellite sensors. The temporal resolution for PICS data acquired by any sensor is limited by the amount of time required for it to make subsequent passes over the site. Consequently, for any given PICS, it can take many years of imaging to develop a sufficient amount of cloud-free data to perform radiometric calibration; this can be especially problematic for sensors in their early years after launch. This thesis presents techniques to combine Landsat-8; …

“Creating A New Mythos”: Reassessing Race Standards And Latina/O Students, Margarita Vizcarra Jan 2017

“Creating A New Mythos”: Reassessing Race Standards And Latina/O Students, Margarita Vizcarra

Master's Theses

This research will focus on the race and ethnicity categories used to classify people in the United States in relation to school age students. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) first standardized federal race and ethnicity categories in 1977 in order to enforce compliance with civil rights laws. In 1997 revisions were made to these standards due to increasing criticism by the public, advocacy groups, and government agencies (Williams, 2006). The 1977 decision by the OMB designated the category of Hispanic, or Latino, as an ethnicity rather than a race which was once again upheld in the 1997 update. …

Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Functioning, And Self-Management In Youth With Spina Bifida: Direct, Mediating, And Reciprocal Pathways, Alexa Stern Jan 2017

Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Functioning, And Self-Management In Youth With Spina Bifida: Direct, Mediating, And Reciprocal Pathways, Alexa Stern

Master's Theses

Although successful self-management of health care responsibilities is critical to meeting the developmental demands associated with the transition to adulthood in youth with spina bifida (SB), research on individual factors impacting self-management in this population is sparse. Given the increased risk for cognitive deficits and development of depressive symptoms in this population, this study utilized a longitudinal, multi-method, multi-informant design to examine two pathways through which depressive symptoms and neuropsychological dysfunction may be associated with medical autonomy and adherence in youth with SB.

Bootstrapped mediation analyses revealed that teacher-reported depressive symptoms significantly mediated the respective relationships between attention and working …

The Middle Stone Age In West Africa: Lithics From The Birimi Site In Northern Ghana, Agatha Kenda Baluh Jan 2017

The Middle Stone Age In West Africa: Lithics From The Birimi Site In Northern Ghana, Agatha Kenda Baluh

Theses and Dissertations

The Middle Stone Age (MSA) began around 300,000 years ago and continued to around 20,000 years ago in Africa. During this time anatomically modern Homo sapiens emerged in Africa. Also during this period modern human behavioral traits appear gradually both temporally and geographically in Africa. This is in direct contrast to “human revolution” theories of modern human origins, which state that behavioral modernity emerged rapidly and quite late in the record around 40,000 years ago. Siliceous mudstone artifacts from the MSA component of the Birimi site in northern Ghana were analyzed using Individual Flake Analysis, helping to highlight this period …

Qeeg Correlates Of Cognitive Processing Speed In Children With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Joseph Ferraracci Jan 2017

Qeeg Correlates Of Cognitive Processing Speed In Children With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Joseph Ferraracci

Theses and Dissertations

Electroencephalography (EEG) and neuropsychological test measures have been previously used to understand the underlying brain changes in individuals with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, literature discussing the relationship between EEG and neuropsychological test performance is scarce and, further, has not been investigated explicitly in children. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cognitive and academic deficits in children with traumatic brain injury and, additionally, this study aims to understand the underlying relationship between EEG and neuropsychological test performance among this sample. Analyses included twenty-one participants between the ages of 8 and 19 years of age (male, n=14; …

Late Precontact Settlement On The Northern Seward Peninsula Coast: Results Of Recent Fieldwork, Shelby L. Anderson, Justin Andrew Junge Jan 2017

Late Precontact Settlement On The Northern Seward Peninsula Coast: Results Of Recent Fieldwork, Shelby L. Anderson, Justin Andrew Junge

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Changing Arctic settlement patterns are associated with shifts in socioeconomic organization and interaction at both the inter- and intraregional levels; analysis of Arctic settlement patterns can inform research on the emergence and spread of Arctic maritime adaptations. Changes in late precontact settlement patterns in Northwest Alaska suggest significant shifts in subsistence and/or social organization, but the patterns themselves are not well understood. Prior research around Kotzebue Sound suggests three possible scenarios: (1) population decrease and dispersion from settlement centers after 550 cal bp, (2) population stability and dispersion after 550 cal bp, and (3) different settlement patterns in the northern …

Community Members' Perspectives On The Thurgood Marshall Academic High School Riot: A Case Study Of The Effects Of Embedded Law Enforcement In High School, Kim-Shree Maufas

Doctoral Dissertations

Despite studies by legal and social-justice organizations pointing to connections between school-based police referrals and arrests that lead youth (particularly of color) into the juvenile-justice courts and criminal courts and are funneling students of color into the school-to-prison pipeline, schools increasing use school resource officers (SROs) in programs on K-12 campuses. Much of the academic literature about SROs in schools highlight the rationale for placing programs in urban schools from the perspectives of policymakers, legislators, members of the juvenile- and criminal-justice systems, and school district officials. Limited scholarly work documents the voices of impacted members of school communities (educators, students, …

Identifying Multiple Predictors Of Physical Rehabilitation Outcomes, Jacklyn M. Sullivan, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Sydney Y. Schaeffer Jan 2017

Identifying Multiple Predictors Of Physical Rehabilitation Outcomes, Jacklyn M. Sullivan, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Sydney Y. Schaeffer

Research on Capitol Hill

Previous studies have suggested that disability in activities of daily living (ADLs) is an outcome of cognitive impairment, physical limitations, psychosocial factors, and environmental constraints. We hypothesis that cognitive abilities and psychosocial factors measured at admission can be used to predict a patients physical therapy progression in a transitional care facility. Environmental conditions were held constant for all patients and physical limitations were not used as a predictor of therapy progression, as the test for therapy progression is based on physical ability. In a sample of adults (n=93) aged 38-98 receiving physical rehabilitation treatment, we collected Minimum Data Set (MDS) …

Anti-Hispanic Sentiment And U.S.-Mexican Relations, Jessica Dellaquila Jan 2017

Anti-Hispanic Sentiment And U.S.-Mexican Relations, Jessica Dellaquila

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

Even though U.S.-Mexican relations during the mid-nineteenth century make up a tiny sliver of American history, they point to deeply racist attitudes towards Mexicans (and Hispanic people in general) that are still salient in the United States today. These attitudes came as a result of racist assumptions and rhetoric in our early government institutions, remained because of the construction of racist language in laws and treaties, and worsened as lawmakers and law-enforcement carried out written policy in real-life, letting their own racist attitudes creep into the real-life application of the laws. Today, we are in danger of perpetuating this process. …
