University Libraries Faculty Publications

Long Island University (LIU) is a private institution serving approximately 18,000 students at its two primary campuses located in Brooklyn, New York, and Brookville, New York. The LIU Libraries conducted a multi-year research project beginning in 2012 to better understand undergraduate and graduate-student study habits at its urban and suburban campuses. Based upon the understanding of ethnography as one of the best ways to explore a “culture”—in this case, the culture of LIU student research habits—this project’s intent was to improve the libraries’ understanding of student research and study needs. The study examined research practices from students’ perspectives in order …

Reimagining The Library: Designing Library Spaces To Meet The Needs Of Today's Students, Kathleen T. Baril, Kelly Kobiela

Heterick Faculty Scholarship

Libraries, long the heart of academic life, nonetheless have been perceived as a passive space for physical resources and quiet study. Changes in the dissemination of information, as well as teaching and learning methods that focus on high-impact practices, have driven library staff to reimagine the physical buildings of libraries. To meet the new needs of students, Ohio Northern University planned a full renovation of the first floor of its undergraduate library. Current space and space usage was analyzed, considering how collaborative learning and undergraduate research might be conducted in renovated spaces. Ethnographic studies such as observations, focus groups, and …

The Humanistic Value Of Individual Events Participation, Leah White Jan 2017

The Humanistic Value Of Individual Events Participation, Leah White

National Forensic Journal

Forensic educators have long struggled to communicate the value of forensic participation to those not familiar with the activity. Drawing from literature in the field of counseling and student personnel, this paper argues participation in individual events is beneficial because it allows students to engage in what Baxter Magolda (2001) refers to as self-authorship among good company. Using interviews and autoethnographic methods, I investigate how participation in competitive forensics helps students meet personal growth needs. I conclude with suggestions for how forensic educators can communicate the student development goals achieved through forensic participation.

The Impact Of Aid On The Economic Growth Of Developing Countries (Ldcs) In Sub-Saharan Africa, Maurice W. Phiri

Gettysburg Economic Review

Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of Sub-Saharan African have been recipients of official development assistance for more than 5 decades; however they are still characterized by chronic problems of poverty, low living standards and weak economic growth. The hot question is: Is aid effective in promoting economic growth? Thus, this paper investigates the impact of aid on the economic growth of 12 least developed countries in Sub-Saharan Africa over a period of 20 years. I take a fixed effects instrumental variable approach and the results imply that aid has a statistically insignificant negative impact on economic growth. I therefore conclude that …

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser Jan 2017

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser

Urban and Community Studies Faculty Writing

The scholarly and journalistic literature usually treats urban agriculture as a new phenomenon, but it is a neglected dimension of urban history. Some U.S. cities, at least in the Northeast, had food-raising and processing practices not just in colonial times but right up until the relatively recent past. Three areas of history are explored that have mostly omitted discussion of city food production but nonetheless provide important frameworks to explore such production: urban development, agricultural, and immigrant history. Woven throughout this piece is evidence from a study of Waterbury, Connecticut. Local food production did not die when the Industrial Revolution …

Anthropology Research

An inventory and analysis of four lots of Native American artifacts within the James M. Collins Collection curated at Southern Methodist University reveals the research value of archaeological materials with less than perfect provenience information. All that is known about the origins of these artifacts is that they appear to have come from Oregon. Elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence identifies the most likely geochemical source for all of the obsidian artifacts in these lots. Source profiles identified from the 75 artifacts represent major sources located in southwestern Idaho. Similarly, the morphology of the artifacts is consistent with material …

About The Assessment Of 'Programming Partnership' Of Foreign Political Strategy Of The Usa In Central Asia, B. Ochilov

International Relations: Politics, Economics, Law

An important role in the development of the “programming partnership” in relation to Central Asia as a single region played assessments and findings of experts, the political forming circles of the United States with regard to security issues, as well as the dissemination of American values. Thus, the "programming partnership" of the United States in Central Asia is somewhat different from the usual counterparts used by the United States in other countries. American experts have identified Central Asia as a multifunctional and multicultural geopolitical region, communicating with other spaces, from which various signs of the threats of terrorism appear.

Middle East: Modern Geopolitical Stylistics, F. Makhmudov

International Relations: Politics, Economics, Law

Crises and conflicts in Middle East are compounded by the fact that the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is still far from a solution and the peace process in Syria has just begun. Taking into account the current situation and taking into account the tensions between the states of the Middle East region, there is reason to believe that all the states of the region should sit at the negotiating table in order to create, based on reasonable compromises and permissible outcomes, an acceptable model for building a regional security system for everyone .

Humility In Criminal Justice: What It Might Invite Us To Reconsider, Dean A. Strang Jan 2017

Humility In Criminal Justice: What It Might Invite Us To Reconsider, Dean A. Strang

Politics

Imagine how our system of criminal justice might look different if one value ascended in the system's hierarchy of values: humility. Day to day, in my work, I do not see much humility among police officers, defense lawyers, prosecutors, probation agents, and judges. This is noteworthy, given how unavoidability uncertain--or at least contestable or close--many of the outcomes in our trial and appellate courts are to an objective eye. Even when the basic facts on guilt are fairly certain, the right sentence often is not. I propose that humility is an essential value that, properly understood, is tied to liberty; …

The centre of the dimple pattern (centroid) was located and the following variables were measured; distance and angle of the impact point from the centroid and surface area of the impact zone. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify whether impact variables had significant associations with ball roll variables; …
