Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans And Queer + (Lgbtq+) Experiences While Accessing Healthcare And Social Services Within Brantford/Brant County, Christine Wildman Jan 2017

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans And Queer + (Lgbtq+) Experiences While Accessing Healthcare And Social Services Within Brantford/Brant County, Christine Wildman

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The purpose of the qualitative study was to better understand how Brantford/Brant County LGBTQ+ community members experience accessing healthcare and social services. Over one month I interviewed 8 LGBTQ+ community members and conducted a focus group with 4 Trans and Gender non-conforming individuals. An intersectional feminist and critical Trans politic analysis was used to understand how LGBTQ+ community members experience accessing care. The results reveal that LGBTQ+ community members experience structural violence through oppressive administrative practices. Specifically, heteronormative and homonormative behaviors and assumed heterosexuality and/or gender, which creates a climate where LGBTQ+ people do not feel safe seeking healthcare and/or …

Hungry Cities Partnership

This report provides an overview of Greater Mexico City and its food system. The city’s history, demographic characteristics, geography and economy are first discussed. The city’s urban food system and urban food security are then examined with a particular focus on formal and informal food retail, food expenditure patterns, and policies to combat hunger and food insecurity. Meeting the daily food demands of Mexico City’s over 20 million inhabitants requires the agricultural production of Mexico’s rural areas, its fishing industry and food imports. Food products arrive in the city from around the country in a combination of traditional and highly …

The Alternative For Germany’S Radicalization In Historical-Comparative Perspective, David F. Patton Jan 2017

The Alternative For Germany’S Radicalization In Historical-Comparative Perspective, David F. Patton

Government and International Relations Faculty Publications

This article chronicles the AfD’s rightward repositioning and compares it with the programmatic development of three postwar German parties on the ideological wings. By highlighting factors that tilt the balance of power away from moderate reformers towards hardliners, this comparative analysis sheds light on the conditions that lead a relatively successful party on the ideological wings, such as the AfD, to radicalize its programme. Four variables stand out: whether party hardliners take the blame for the recent election loss; whether they offer a convincing programmatic and strategic alternative to the reformers; whether changes in party composition strengthen hardliners; and whether …

Subset Data From The Nauru 1999 And African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (Amma) 2006 Cruise And Matlab Code For Generating Plots For The Paper: Wong And Minnett (2017): The Response Of The Ocean Thermal Skin Layer To Variations In Incident Infrared Radiation., Elizabeth Wong

Supplementary Data and Tools

Data in this collection is largely comprised of subsetted data from two research cruises, the Nauru cruise held from June to July 1999 and the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) cruise held from May to July 2006. The data subset is limited to night conditions under low wind speeds of < 10 m/s and consists of the surface fluxes, radiance measurements from the Marine Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI), the retrievals of the skin sea surface temperatures and skin sea surface temperature profiles from the M-AERI's radiance spectral measurements. Also included are line-by-line-radiative transfer simulations provided by Dr. Goshka Szczodrak, transmission coefficient spectra obtained from the HITRAN database, and wind speed data from the Special Sensing Microwave Imager (SSM/I) version 6. provided by Dr. Chelle Gentemann. Matlab code is provided which reads the datafile (DATA.mat) and outputs the figures illustrated in the paper Wong and Minnett (2017) (https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JC013351).

A Systems Approach To The Problem Of Falls In Old Age, Patrick A. Dillon Jan 2017

A Systems Approach To The Problem Of Falls In Old Age, Patrick A. Dillon

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

The problem of falls in old age is enormously costly and disruptive for the older individual, others, and society, and its severity is likely to intensify as our population ages. This dissertation takes a systems-oriented approach toward the falls problem and is presented in two parts. The first part critically develops a new approach to the problem of falls. The second part describes an empirical study that applies this new approach in a pragmatic manner.

Conventional fall prevention strategies employ a reductionist approach to the problem of falls. This approach is questioned because it corresponds poorly to the holistic nature …

Theory, Data, And Deterrence: A Response To Kenwick, Vasquez, And Powers, Brett Ashley Leeds, Jesse C. Johnson Jan 2017

Theory, Data, And Deterrence: A Response To Kenwick, Vasquez, And Powers, Brett Ashley Leeds, Jesse C. Johnson

Political Science Faculty Publications

Kenwick, Vasquez, and Powers question whether empirical evidence supports the claim that defense pacts deter conflict as our prior research has concluded. We review the theoretical argument for why defense pacts should deter conflict and consider the challenges inherent in evaluating deterrence using observational data. We then consider whether the research design choices of Kenwick et al. improve upon our research design. We demonstrate that claims that defense pacts deter conflict are robust to many of these changes in research design, and we argue that the consequential difference, while perhaps appropriate for testing the Steps-to-War argument, is not appropriate for …

Child Age And Gender Differences In Food Security In A Low-Income Inner-City Population, Robert A. Moffitt, David C. Ribar Jan 2017

Child Age And Gender Differences In Food Security In A Low-Income Inner-City Population, Robert A. Moffitt, David C. Ribar

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

A long literature in economics concerns itself with differential allocations of resources to different children within the family unit. In a study of approximately 1,500 very disadvantaged families with children in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio from 1999 to 2005, significant differences in levels of food allocation, as measured by an indicator of food “insecurity,” are found across children of different ages and genders. Using answers to unique survey questions for a specific child in the family, food insecurity levels are found to be much higher among older boys and girls than among younger ones, and to be sometimes higher …

Enhancing Student Altruism Using Secure Attachment Messages (Sam) In Lecture, Kelly Campbell, Stephany Ramos Jan 2017

Enhancing Student Altruism Using Secure Attachment Messages (Sam) In Lecture, Kelly Campbell, Stephany Ramos

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this brief report, we examine whether students’ (N=230) willingness to help individuals in distress (altruism) would be augmented after viewing Secure Attachment Messages (SAM) during lecture in a college racism course. Students were presented with SAM in alternating weeks as part of the PowerPoint presentation slides. In each of the weeks, their likelihood of engaging in altruistic behaviors was assessed using hypothetical scenarios and a student response system, Top Hat Monocle. We predicted that the SAM would prompt students to think of their attachment figures and enhance their feelings of security, which would increase their willingness to engage in …

Puerto Ricans As Contingent Citizens: Shifting Mandated Identities And Imperial Disjunctures, Pedro Caban Jan 2017

Puerto Ricans As Contingent Citizens: Shifting Mandated Identities And Imperial Disjunctures, Pedro Caban

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

In 1917 the United States Congress imposed citizenship on the inhabitants of Puerto Rico. It was a contingent citizenship subject to legal redefi nition and tailored to Puerto Rico’s colonial status within the U.S. empire. Many scholars have argued that racism was determinative in the decision to consign Puerto Ricans a diminished citizenship. But it is necessary to point out that the U.S. had crafted an adaptive racial narrative that distinguished among racialized people under its sovereignty in terms of their capacities for self-government and ability to comprehend Anglo-Saxon political and legal institutions. Moreover, in addition to racism, strategic considerations …

High Healthcare Utilization At The Onset Of Medically Unexplained Symptoms, Lisa M. Mcandrew, L. Alison Phillips, Drew A. Helmer, Kieran J. Maestro, Charles C. Engel, Lauren M. Greenberg, Nicole Anastasides, Karen S. Quigley

Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Objective: Patients with medically unexplained syndromes (MUS) often do not receive appropriate healthcare. A critical time for effective healthcare is the inception of MUS. The current study examined data from a prospective longitudinal study of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans to understand the relationship of increasing physical symptom burden to healthcare utilization.

Methods: Data was examined from a prospective study of OEF/OIF veterans assessed before and one year after deployment (n=335). Physical symptom burden was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15). Analyses were conducted with polynomial regression and response surface analysis (RSA).

Results: Increases in physical symptom …

Housing Prices, Stock Prices And The U.S. Economy, Kamal Upadhyaya, Dharmendra Dhakal, Franklin Mixon, Jr. Jan 2017

Housing Prices, Stock Prices And The U.S. Economy, Kamal Upadhyaya, Dharmendra Dhakal, Franklin Mixon, Jr.

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

This paper studies the relationship between housing prices, stock prices, interest rates and aggregate output in the U.S. using monthly data from 1993 to 2014. Evidence from causality tests and a variance decomposition procedure suggest that stock prices have a much larger effect on aggregate output in the U.S. economy than do either housing prices or interest rates. Instead, the wealth effect created by changes in stock prices has a relatively large impact on U.S. aggregate output. Separate estimations and variance decompositions for the sample periods 1993 - 2001, 2002 – 2008 and 2009 – 2014 show that the impact …

Teaching And Un-Teaching Source Evaluation: Questioning Authority In Information Literacy Instruction, Katelyn Angell, Eamon Tewell Jan 2017

Teaching And Un-Teaching Source Evaluation: Questioning Authority In Information Literacy Instruction, Katelyn Angell, Eamon Tewell

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

This study details the design of library instruction sessions for undergraduate students that intended to encourage critical source evaluation and the questioning of established authorities, and appraises these instructional aims through a thematic analysis of 148 artifacts containing student responses to group and individual activities. The authors found a widespread reliance on traditional indicators of academic and scholarly authority, though some students expressed more personal or complex understandings of source evaluation, trustworthiness, and authorship. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for academic librarians interested in promoting learners’ senses of agency and authority.

Potential Risk Factors For Diabetes In Undergraduate Students, Tiffany Santiago Jan 2017

Potential Risk Factors For Diabetes In Undergraduate Students, Tiffany Santiago

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is the inability to effectively utilize insulin, known as insulin resistance, which is essential for the body’s absorption of glucose and the subsequent generation of energy. Although it is most prevalent in adulthood, T2D can emerge at any age. Unlike Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), certain steps can be taken toward the prevention and management of T2D. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), diet, physical activity, weight, smoking, blood pressure, blood glucose level, and family history of diabetes are all risk factors. This archival study examined how these possible precursors combined with history of reported exposure …

Understanding The Complex Underlying Causes Of The Rise Of Isis In Iraq And Syria, Tina-Marie Bonsangue Jan 2017

Understanding The Complex Underlying Causes Of The Rise Of Isis In Iraq And Syria, Tina-Marie Bonsangue

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

How can we understand the complex underlying causes of the rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria? Did the United States create a “vacuum” in the Middle East that allowed ISIS to come to power? To what extent if true, is this argument a simplification? This thesis will argue that there were in fact multiple variables that led to the rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq. From a historical aspect, it will examine the regimes within two the countries, analyzing the complex nature of each. This will explain the oppression that many faced. This thesis will also examine the …

How Citizens United Vs Fec Impacted The Quality Of Democracy, John J. Dowling, Iii Jan 2017

How Citizens United Vs Fec Impacted The Quality Of Democracy, John J. Dowling, Iii

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

In 2010 the United States Supreme Court delivered an opinion in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission which reversed decades of federal campaign finance law. The Court held that corporations, unions, and other entities could not be subject to federal campaign finance laws that restricted these organizations from engaging in independent expenditures using general treasury funds – i.e., advocating for the election or defeat of a specific candidate for federal office. Two months later, in SpeechNow v. Federal Election Commission, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia extended the ruling to apply to non-profit organizations. The result …

Hate Speech On The Internet: Crime Or Free Speech?, Grace Udoh-Oshin Jan 2017

Hate Speech On The Internet: Crime Or Free Speech?, Grace Udoh-Oshin

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

The Internet has a lot of positive features. It gives users fast access to information, allows for communication with others who might otherwise be out of reach, and much more; however, the Internet allows for a lot of negativity as well. There has been an increase in hate based activity on social media, and the anonymity and flexibility afforded by the Internet has made harassment and expressions of hate easy, thus making it much harder to implement traditional law enforcement. This paper gives a history of hate speech in America, and examines the difficulties of regulating hate speech on the …

Bystander Reactions And Social Support Of Sexual Assault Victims, Mari Eik Jan 2017

Bystander Reactions And Social Support Of Sexual Assault Victims, Mari Eik

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Incidents of sexual assault on campuses have been a concern for colleges and universities throughout North America and Europe. Studies estimate a prevalence of 20 to 25 percent of women attending higher education have experienced a completed or attempted sexual assault (Fisher, Cullen & Turner, 2000). The following study examined a unique training program adapted from other bystander training programs for use in classrooms throughout the United States and Europe in educating bystanders about sexual assault prevention (Alegría-Flores, Raker, Pleasants, Weaver & Weinberger, 2015). The purpose of the study was 1) to examine if adverse childhood experiences would predict bystander …

Negative Affects That Social Media Causes On Body Imaging, Katelyn J. Gaffney

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

The main purpose of this thesis is to present, discuss and criticize the effect of negative body imagining caused by social media. This will be achieved in part by explaining the history of women and the change of their appearances and Body Mass Index during different times in history. It will also discuss the historical differences of what was considered attractive during those times based on different forms of social media and how it changed from time period to period. Later on in the thesis I will discuss the strong negative influences caused by social media and in the fashion …

Sing A New Song To The City: Ambient Rhetoric And Urban Hymns, Adam J. Copeland Jan 2017

Sing A New Song To The City: Ambient Rhetoric And Urban Hymns, Adam J. Copeland

Faculty Publications

Hymns are a key component of how Christians express their faith. But many of these hymns do represent the rhythms and sensibilities of an older and largely agrarian world. Using the concept of “ambient rhetoric,” Adam Copeland suggests that it is time for other hymns that represent the ethos of daily life in an increasingly urbanized world, hymns that will speak to the realities of urban culture.
